00:00Indiana is at cutting edge of 9-1-1 because at the end of the day we want to save lives.
00:04State Treasurer Daniel Elliott oversees Indiana's statewide 9-1-1 program.
00:09One of the things he's proud of, Indiana is one of the only states where you can not only call
00:14but text 9-1-1 in every corner of the state. And that means it's safer to get help in any situation.
00:22She was able to text. All she said was please help. And when I say please help, PLS help.
00:30And the man who was abusing her was arrested and she's safe.
00:33Here in Lafayette, head of dispatch at the Lafayette Police Department Katie Huber says
00:37the service is used but not as much as they'd hope.
00:40I think it's just people forget that it's there. We've had it since 2014.
00:45And so I think it's just kind of in the back of their mind.
00:48Treasurer Elliott says that's why he's out spreading awareness.
00:51Indiana's 9-1-1 system is literally one of the top tier 9-1-1 systems in the nation.
00:58This is not an exaggeration. This is fact.
01:01But having all the best tools in the world don't matter if they're not being utilized.
01:06But that service won't just let you text in English or maybe Spanish.
01:10Through an AI program, dispatchers all over Indiana can speak to anyone in over 150 languages.
01:17Our 9-1-1 text services can speak any language. It would translate it back to you
01:21and you can type in your language and we would be able to respond and you can read it as well.
01:26Where you are in the Hoosier State or what language you speak,
01:29help is always one call or text away. Emily Slater, Star City News, Lafayette.
