Gary O'Neil set to stay at Wolves: Liam Keen and Nathan Judah analysis
Transcript
00:00Hello, I'm Nathan Judah. I am delighted to be joined by Mr. Liam Keane. I'm still in
00:14my shirt from last night, my hoodie from last night when he just got back in from London
00:19and we've got some news. So yes, straight in with the video, straight staring at your
00:24beautiful face again, Liam. Obviously disappointed it was all last night, better than Wednesday,
00:28but still ultimately no points and things need to improve very, very quickly. What we
00:33do understand for clarification is that Gary O'Neill at this moment in time, we believe
00:38will be manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Ipswich game this Saturday. And contrary
00:44to belief and popular opinion and social media, etc, not just Saturday and beyond as it stands
00:51as well.
00:52Yeah, I think it's important to mention, first of all, that the final decision comes
00:58from Geoff Shee, the chairman, and it can change quickly. There's a change of heart,
01:05a development with, you know, we know they've been sounding out potential candidates. So
01:09obviously results as well. Look, they've got a massive game against Ipswich coming up.
01:13So all those factors can change the situation, which I think is important to caveat it with.
01:19But as it stands right now, following a 2-1 loss to West Ham last night on Monday night,
01:25Gary O'Neill is preparing the team for Ipswich and will be leading them forward and results
01:29dependent provided it goes well at Molyneux, which of course is a big if because they have
01:35to go there and do the business. Gary O'Neill will remain in charge for the foreseeable
01:39and heading into what should hopefully be a busy January transfer window. It's definitely
01:46a switch and a change from where we were probably roughly a week ago, five days or so ago, following
01:52the loss to Everton when Wolves were more likely to make a change than not. As it stands
01:57now, it's looking less likely with every day that passes.
02:00Yes, that's exactly what you say there. We did think that something was imminent. People
02:04still think that something could be imminent. But at this time of recording, and like you
02:08say, things can change from the very top. But there is a belief within the hierarchy,
02:12within the camp that Gary O'Neill can lead this side forward. And the most important
02:16thing is he's still got the players' belief. He's still got the dressing room and he understands.
02:20He spoke of his disappointment last night about the fan base, but he says he can deal
02:23with that. But it's the most important thing is him and his relationship with the players.
02:28And there's enough there. And I guess the powers that be see that there's enough there
02:31at this moment in time that he will continue to manage this side and back him for Ipswich
02:36and like I say, for fixtures after that as well.
02:38Yes, I think it's important to mention that they have an appreciation for what he is as
02:43a coach and an appreciation and an understanding that he's not been left in a great position
02:48financially in terms of what he's been able to bring in in the summer. And that leaves
02:53a tough situation. Wolves are going to be battling down the bottom end of the table.
02:57All those things combined, as you rightly say, alongside the players remaining behind
03:01Gary O'Neill, Everton as a performance, I think is the only game you can suggest that
03:05it was a departure from that. But from what we saw on Monday and in other games for Wolves'
03:11faults, which there are many, the players have been sticking with the head coach and
03:15fighting with him. I think that that proved on Monday that they still are doing that.
03:19And everything we're hearing is that the dressing room is very united in that and understanding
03:23of what challenges lay ahead of Gary O'Neill and ahead of Wolves. And with all those things
03:27combined, Wolves' plan as it stands, as of recording at roughly 4pm here on Tuesday,
03:35is that Wolves will be sticking by Gary O'Neill for the time being.
03:38Yes, we'll be at Gary O'Neill's press conference on Friday ahead of the game against Ipswich
03:42and potentially way beyond that. For more on the latest, make sure you log on and follow
