00:00Authorities on Monday arrested Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing United Health
00:05executive Brian Thompson in a brazen shooting outside a Manhattan hotel last week, ending
00:11a massive five-day manhunt.
00:13At a press conference, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the 26-year-old
00:19was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was spotted eating at a McDonald's.
00:24The suspect was in a McDonald's and was recognized by an employee who then called local police.
00:31Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor,
00:37both consistent with the weapon used in the murder.
00:41They also recovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by our wanted
00:47individual.
00:48Also recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID, matching the ID our suspect used to check
00:55into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident.
01:00Additionally, officers recovered a handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.
01:09While the handwritten document did not mention specific targets, New York City officials
01:13said Mangione harbored, quote, ill will toward corporate America.
01:18Tisch said New York detectives had gone to Pennsylvania to question Mangione, who will
01:23likely be extradited to New York to face charges.
01:27Social media accounts that appeared to belong to Mangione identified him as a former student
01:32at the University of Pennsylvania and said he lived in Honolulu, Hawaii.
01:37Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned those who supported Mangione.
01:41Some attention in this case, especially online, has been deeply disturbing, as some have looked
01:50to celebrate instead of condemning this killer.
01:55Brian Thompson was a father to two, he was a husband, and he was a friend to many.
02:02And yes, he was the CEO of a health insurance company.
02:08In America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint.
02:20The murder of Thompson, who had been CEO of United Health Group's insurance unit since
02:24April 2021, unleashed a wave of frustration from Americans who have seen their health
02:30insurance claims or care denied, faced unexpected costs, or paid more for premiums and medical
02:36care, all trends that are rising, according to recent data.
