00:00The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center of the Department of Information and Communications Technology gave tips to the public
00:09on how to avoid scammers, especially this holiday season.
00:13The agency also launched a program for the protection of the public against cyber threats.
00:19This is what Rod Lagusan reported.
00:21This holiday season, when more people are spending, the public is reminded to be careful against scammers, especially when it comes to digital transactions such as online banking or ePay Wallet.
00:37The common denominator, I think, the new rule that we should learn, as long as there's a link in your text message, it's a scam.
00:46A few times the CICC said that there are prohibitions, the NTC, against including links in SMS.
00:55So, obviously, this means that if there's a link in the SMS, it's a scammer.
01:01This is especially true for scammers who claim to be a legitimate financial institution by texting a message to the inbox of a user.
01:10This is possible using the International Mobile Subscriber Identity Catcher or IMSI Catcher, a device that can be a fake cell tower.
01:19So, it's important to remember not to click the link to avoid being victimized.
01:24In addition, to counter scammers, the DICT launched the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, a private sector entity, Protekta Pilipinas.
01:35This is an initiative to protect the public from cyber threats, which includes various stakeholders such as telco companies, financial technology entities, and others.
01:45A large part of its goal is to carry out a wide-ranging information campaign.
01:51We have to safeguard technology and at the same time ensure that technology works for us, for the people.
01:59While it is liable to misuse, definitely we have to get our acts together so that the misuse is countered and the benefits of the technology really are availed of by the public.
02:17And as for the current situation, the CICC gave a D.E. that it is important to have the technology needed.
02:23It promises that there is an IMSI Catcher that currently believes that technology is about to be created to counter it.
02:30This also includes the training of their personnel.
02:34Protekta Pilipinas will be using FinTech.
02:37Protekta Pilipinas FinTech will be using the venue, the digital platform that's being offered by CICC.
02:43So right now, you can actually go to CICC.
02:45There's a website, an email, a hotline, and that's where the victims can escalate their concern.
02:53They can also go direct to other government agencies that have their own respective hotlines.
02:58And yes, the media also plays a big role in spreading the information that the public needs.
03:05Rod Lagusad for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
