00:00The Department of Science and Technology's Advanced Science and Technology Institute or DOSD ASTI is urging the Philippines to transition to
00:08IPv6 for better security and network capacity. Two major telecom companies have committed to the shift. Rod Lagusa tells us more.
00:19Whenever we use the internet, such as when accessing social media, visiting websites, watching videos and more,
00:25there is an internet protocol or IP address which serves as a unique identity for a user on a network.
00:30In conjunction with this, Advanced Science and Technology Institute of DOSD is advocating for the transition of the country to a newer version of the internet protocol.
00:39This is the Internet Protocol Version 6 or IPv6. According to ASTI, one of the benefits of transitioning to IPv6 is a more secure network.
00:47ASTI said that the country is relatively behind when it comes to making this shift.
00:51And it is the responsibility of internet providers such as telecom companies and other internet service providers to make this move.
00:58They need to migrate or at least configure the IPv6 in their network so that the IPv4 and IPv6 can run simultaneously.
01:12Until we reach a time where we can close the IPv4.
01:18Also included in the benefits for internet service providers is that they can accommodate more clients or users on their networks.
01:25Along with this, they can maximize their existing resources as there will be no need for expensive equipment to expand their networks.
01:31In the case of ASTI, they support the country's transition to this new internet protocol by having discussions along with experts to discuss it.
01:38Sometimes, there are cases where they need training.
01:41ASTI DOST is also doing training on IPv6.
01:46Basically, what the Philippines needs with IPv6, DOST is trying to fulfill that.
01:54He also mentioned that the two major telecom companies have already committed to transitioning to the newer version of the internet protocol.
02:01Under the Executive Order 893, the country is mandated to shift to the new internet protocol.
02:06Rod Lagusad, for the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines.
