00:00Please welcome Shonda Rhimes to the stage.
00:07Okay, okay, so usually I write words and then Carrie says them so this is new for me.
00:26But I'm really glad to be here for Carrie.
00:28This is so well deserved.
00:31Not just because she has accomplished all that she has accomplished in the industry
00:34because she has and not just because she's an incredibly talented and versatile actress
00:39because she is and it's not because she's the best example of how to be a lead actor
00:44on set though our Scandal family, oh thank you for the direction, it's not because she's
00:51the best example of how to be a lead actress on set though our Scandal family to this day
00:55still refers to you as the best number one in the business.
00:59Yes, no.
01:01I say it is so well deserved because Carrie Washington is a star and I don't mean a star
01:07like a Hollywood star.
01:08I'm going to explain.
01:10I like Carrie and I don't like anybody.
01:15But Carrie and I grew to have this connection through our Olivia Pope, a really super weird
01:20intense over a cliff kind of connection.
01:24We both gave ourselves over to this process where she never questioned what I wrote for
01:28Olivia and I never questioned how she played Olivia and I don't know if I can fully describe
01:33how rare that is.
01:34That's a really special kind of creative energy and trust.
01:38I exhaled Olivia out in writing and Carrie inhaled Olivia in with her acting and we both
01:42sort of created this woman as we went.
01:46At times it was overly intense.
01:48There were days when I would show up dressed for work only to find that as Olivia Pope,
01:52Carrie Washington was dressed exactly like me.
01:55It was crazy.
01:57We were both woven into this woman in a white hat like I was her and she was me in this
02:02very weird way and Carrie was all of us.
02:04But we did this for week after week for years and that means that I got to know Carrie in
02:09ways most people likely do not, which is why I can tell you Carrie is a star and yes, like
02:14a Hollywood star, but so much more than that.
02:18Carrie's a true star.
02:19She is bright.
02:20She's a bright soul who lights up any space that she's in.
02:24When Carrie became Olivia Pope, I didn't realize I was doing more than hiring an incredibly
02:28talented actor.
02:30I was starting an education I did not even know I needed.
02:34You are smart.
02:36She is funny.
02:37She is thoughtful.
02:38She is compassionate.
02:39Her work ethic is like nothing I've ever seen.
02:43You're strong.
02:45You're determined.
02:47You're never compromising in your values.
02:48You're always holding on to who you are despite all of this crazy attention.
02:54She's a born leader.
02:55She's always taking care of everybody.
02:57Always the hardest worker.
02:58She's passionate about the role she plays, about her philanthropy, about her activism,
03:03about the world, and she is passionate about her family.
03:07When I first met Carrie, she was single.
03:09Over the course of Scandal, I watched her become a wife and a mother.
03:13I also watched her become a businesswoman, a producer, and an icon.
03:17She does it all with this determination and this grace, and she's joyful about it.
03:22So she is a star.
03:23She's a bright star who lights up our world, and she also lights up everyone around her.
03:28Carrie doesn't just shine for herself.
03:30She shares her light with anyone who needs it.
03:33And Carrie's light comes with a special kind of wisdom and generosity.
03:37She's ended up teaching me far more than I could ever teach her.
03:42Carrie knows her worth and makes sure others know theirs.
03:45Who Carrie is explains how she has handled the pressures and challenges that came her
03:51way while she was busy accomplishing so much and acting so vividly in the historic role
03:57of Olivia Pope.
03:59She sets an example of how to be a person in this business, a woman in this business,
04:04a woman of color in this business, of how to be a human in this business.
04:09A star.
04:10I'm really grateful to call you my friend, and the star is very, very well-deserved.
04:15Thank you so much.
04:18Okay.
