Although there has been no clear signal from the government, some have suggested that a new from of road tax is being considered which would reduce congestion and environmental damage, but increase the tax for those who clock up more miles in their cars.

We went into Manchester to canvas public opinion.

00:00Hello and welcome to People on the Street, my name's Theo and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester asking people about paper mile road tax.
00:07There have been rumours that the government are considering implementing what is called paper mile road tax,
00:12in that the more you drive over the course of the year, the higher your road tax is, with the idea of it reducing congestion.
00:18We want to know if people are on board with it and whether they think it's actually something that the government will implement.
00:23I mean driving is mostly out of necessity when you're doing it, like my dad drives from Salford to Stockport a few times a day for his office work.
00:31I don't drive myself, but you know, it's out of necessity, so being charged extra when it's something you need to do for work or education is a bit harsh.
00:41Well, it depends, like for example I'm a nurse, so the district nurses who are driving day in day out,
00:48they're going to really struggle because we already pay for parking at hospitals,
00:52we're getting charged there, so they're going to be getting charged for driving round to different houses.
00:56Are they exempt or are they also including in this road tax?
