Newcastle United host Premier League leaders Liverpool hoping to bounce back from the disappointing 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
Transcript
00:00It will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's late disappointment at Crystal Palace when they host Liverpool at St James' Park on Wednesday.
00:09Now just looking back at that Palace game a few days on, I don't think there's any Newcastle supporters out there who can say Newcastle deserved something from that game.
00:17As you've seen the stats by now, well the lack of stats, Newcastle didn't have a shot at goal in that game, it was apparently a blocked shot.
00:27Comments on social media after, I'm not sure when people knew that actually when that blocked shot came.
00:33A really poor attacking performance by Newcastle United.
00:38Of course the way the goal came about, Anthony Gordon's cross deflected in by Newcastle United's main summer transfer target, Mark Gee.
00:47Anyhow, after the game felt at that point in the side had done enough to win the game, but up pops Daniel Munoz at the back post in the 94th minute to inflict.
00:58Newcastle didn't deserve anything, so if anything it was Palace that openly got a deserved equaliser on.
01:05To be fair, I probably feel they should have won the game, but maybe if you look at it, it was two poorer sides on the day.
01:14Newcastle need to improve on that because Palace fighting relegation in the early stages of the season, that's what it looks like.
01:22Newcastle want to go and push and challenge the European places again.
01:27Of course the Premier League table is very tight this season, but they currently sit in the bottom half, 11th.
01:34Having at the start of the week as well, losing to West Ham on Monday night and then going to Palace, you get maximum points on those two games.
01:42Newcastle would have actually been in the top four of the Premier League.
01:46Of course the Premier League table is very tight this season.
01:49There's not many teams showing consistency, but I see if Newcastle have aspirations that they've got to get back in the European places,
01:56they've got to start showing some consistency and they've really struggled to do that this season.
02:02Having particularly played very well for the most part, the three games before the international break, the three wins,
02:10Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal in Nottingham Forest, it felt like Newcastle had turned the corner and we could see what they were trying to do again.
02:19The style of play, the high press, the counter-attacking and that's great and that's what Newcastle United have done so well on there.
02:27But there's teams now that are sitting against Newcastle and they are struggling to create chances when the onus is on them to do so.
02:36We've seen that on Saturday at Crystal Palace.
02:40I couldn't break, I couldn't get in the app Crystal Palace's goal, which is a concern when you consider that Crystal Palace went into the game and won.
02:51They still have only won one game all season, but it felt like it was an opportunity for Newcastle and they missed it badly.
03:01To only have one shot, sorry, no shots at goal is really, really disappointing.
03:09They've got big improvements to make and better came the league leaders, Liverpool, coming to St James' Park.
03:19You could say it's a daunting task, if you like, because Liverpool have been probably the only team that has shown consistency in the Premier League this season.
03:28Last week as well, beat Real Madrid in the Champions League and then beat Manchester City, so the English champions and European champions there, gone like that.
03:39So Liverpool, that's a really difficult outfit, but Newcastle have played well against the big teams this season and I wouldn't be surprised to see Newcastle United get something against Liverpool.
03:51Or at least put in a really good performance, because we've seen that against Arsenal when they won 1-0, Manchester City the 1-1 draw and Tottenham Hotspur early on this season.
04:02So those big games, there's no doubt Newcastle United can get up for those and I expect them to do that on Wednesday night.
04:08But it's the lack of consistency, if you like, against the lesser teams, if that's what you want to call them, where the onus is on Newcastle to really break them down.
04:18They really shouldn't do that. So, Liverpool, tough game. I think Newcastle can get something and then of course on Saturday they go to Brentford and that's when the questions will be asked of Newcastle again.
04:31Brentford, of course, really good home rep all this season, but Brentford are a team that Newcastle should on paper be beating.
04:40And that profile of a team is what Newcastle are struggling to play against, not just this season, but maybe last season as well when you go back to the likes of Luton Town, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, etc.
04:53So, I have to expect a performance against Liverpool. I think of course they can do so because, look, momentum can build very quickly in football.
05:02We've seen that before. International route and Newcastle won those three games off the belt. So, they need to go and start a mini-run from somewhere. I think of course they can start against Liverpool.
