00:00A retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice highlights the importance of historical documents
00:05and Philippine sovereignty claims.
00:07Philippine Information Agency, Memeropa, Rachel Gananshal, has more.
00:14Historical documents establishing Philippine sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal and Kalayaan
00:18Island groups are important to support the country's claims to its titles.
00:23This was emphasized by retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio in
00:28his visit in Palawan for a forum about the West Philippine Sea and turnover of a copy
00:33of the 1875 Carta General del Archipelago Filipino Map to the Provincial Government
00:39of Palawan.
00:40The map was a useful document for the Americans as they adopted it after discarding the map
00:45attached to the Treaty of Paris.
00:47This was the map of Philippine territory that the Americans followed during the American
00:54regime.
00:55But we have forgotten about this map.
00:57We don't have an original print of this map.
00:59We have forgotten about the Treaty of Washington and why it was signed.
01:05So there was a meeting of the minds.
01:07This is very clear because this is very important in our territorial dispute.
01:12Carpio explained that the Treaty of Washington in 1900 clarified that the Philippine territory
01:18includes all islands of the Philippine archipelago, lying outside the lines of the Treaty of Paris
01:23between the United States and Spain.
01:26It is important to correct misconceptions in Philippine history to support not only
01:31its claims in territories but to the future of Filipinos.
01:34From the Philippine Information Agency, me Manopa, Regisyal Garansyal, Balitang Pambansa.
