The NE1 Street Rangers are the eyes and ears on the streets of Newcastle, gathering vital intel and reporting directly to relevant partners, including the police and the council, who, together with NE1 form the recently launched, City Safe partnership.

00:00As part of CitySAFE, NE1 has also expanded its safety team to include a full-time CCTV operative which, as you can see, covers a wide area of Newcastle.
00:09And they've also recruited a business crime officer who works alongside Northumbria Police and the businesses in the city.
00:15We caught up with Andy, NE1's Street Ranger Manager, to find out more about what their role looks like on a day-to-day basis.
00:23We are a team of ambassadors for the city centre.
00:26We are customer service representatives for the general public, all the stores.
00:31We help deal with low-level crime and antisocial behaviour.
00:34We also provide a lot of support to any business within the NE1 postcode.
00:38So that may be whether they are struggling with footfall, we can give them a hand with a little bit of promotion.
00:43And for our media team, we go into regular checks, make sure that the staff feel safe and comfortable at work.
00:49Any issues they have with their premises, we can give them a hand.
00:53Pretty much a nice customer service team for all the stores in the city centre.
00:57So the Street Rangers have been running for a number of years.
01:00We have been dealing with the sort of antisocial behaviour and crime side for the last four or five.
01:06We work quite closely with the police, so what we'll do is we'll deal with the situation.
01:11If we need assistance, we'll call it in to them, put regular reports in to them.
01:15Try and get things filtered through a lot faster than what it would take if businesses do it on their own.
01:20A big part of our role as Street Rangers is we work very closely with a new operation called City Safe.
01:25It's been running since the beginning of this year. It's members of the council, Northumbria Police and ourselves.
01:30We regularly feed intel in, regularly sort of report hot spots where antisocial behaviour is becoming a problem.
01:37Direct resources where necessary, so if it only takes a ranger, we'll send one of us.
01:41If we need a bit more support, we'll call it in, get a community support officer or a police officer down to give us a hand.
01:46So the main focus on City Safe is to ensure that businesses, the public, that Newcastle is a safe city.
01:53We do have our problems, same as any other city, but we work very proactively in trying to shift these issues along.
