05:57It's an absolute pleasure, as always, to be here tonight to celebrate the 12th Tusk
06:01Conservation Awards.
06:03As ever, the Tusk Awards shine a light on a handful of the remarkable people who work
06:08on the front line of conservation.
06:11I'm sure you'll all agree with me that the short films we've just watched beautifully
06:15bring to life the work of this year's winners.
06:18Their extraordinary stories are ones of unwavering determination to protect Africa's natural
06:24world, even in the face of multiple challenges.
06:29Tonight is a reminder that our planet continues to face terrifying environmental concerns,
06:35from climate change and habitat destruction to the exploitation of natural resources and
06:41an alarming downward trend in global biodiversity.
06:45Rainforests, the size of countries, are disappearing, and one million species are at risk of extinction,
06:53mostly due to human activity.
06:56Now is the time to support those globally that work to prevent future generations from
07:02becoming disconnected from nature.
07:06We must invest in the natural world around us and understand the value it has for us
07:11all, both now and in the future.
07:15That is why the insight and knowledge of the award winners tonight is so important.
07:20They should guide and inspire us all to drive change.
07:24They remind us of the importance of living at peace with nature.
07:30This is why it is so crucial that we do everything in our power to support the individuals who
07:36protect the natural world.
07:40This has come into even sharper focus over the past two years, following the murder of
07:45Anton Mozimba in South Africa.
07:48Anton was assassinated in his home for doing his job, protecting the incredible biodiversity
07:55of his country.
07:56Globally, 1,400 rangers have been killed in the past decade.
08:03The sobering role of honour that we saw earlier recognises the rangers who lost their lives,
08:10and serves as a reminder of the ultimate price paid by too many on the front line of conservation.
08:19A few weeks ago, at the United for Wildlife Global Summit, I was delighted to announce
08:24a new initiative that helps improve welfare support for rangers through a series of innovative
08:29measures, including providing accident, medical and life insurance, as well as mentorship.
08:37Developed by Tusk in partnership with the Game Rangers Association of Africa, this scheme
08:43will go a long way in recognising rangers' critical contribution to safeguarding threatened
08:49species, habitats and local communities.
08:53It is only through a collaborative approach, under the guidance of indigenous and local
08:59communities, that we can foster lasting and meaningful change.
09:05I believe we are the lucky ones.
09:07We live in a world in which incredible wildlife exists, and I want that for the generations
09:13that follow.
09:15I want my children to live in a world where swallows still migrate, gorillas still live
09:20in the cloud forests of Uganda, and rhinos still roam the arid rangelands of Namibia.
09:28It will be thanks to extraordinary leaders such as those that we are celebrating today
09:32that this will happen.
09:35Well done once again to tonight's winners.
09:37You give us all the optimism for the future of our planet.
09:41I wish you all a wonderful evening.
