00:00The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme gives businesses a rating so you can make more informed choices
00:06about where to buy and eat food. The Food Standards Agency runs a scheme in partnership
00:11with local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
00:14The rating shows how well the business is doing overall, based on standards found at
00:18the time of inspection. The ratings can be found online and on stickers which are displayed
00:23at business premises. However, the display of the rating sticker is voluntary in England.
00:28They range from 5, meaning hygiene standards are very good, to 0, where urgent improvement
00:33is required. Businesses which are given low ratings must
00:36make urgent or major improvements to hygiene standards. The local authority food safety
00:40officer has several enforcement options available, as well as giving advice and guidance to make
00:45sure these improvements are made. If the officer finds that a business's hygiene
00:49standards are very poor and there's an imminent risk to public health, this could result in
00:54closing it down completely until it's safe for consumers.
