Malaysia’s status as a partner country in BRICS will not affect its role in other international cooperations, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The Foreign Minister said the position did not “water down” its role in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Non-Aligned Movement, or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec).

00:00We do not know the agenda of our participation in the BRIC.
00:10We are not against the government's commitment, but some things need to be clarified first.
00:18We know that countries like China, India and Russia have great economic power and they have their own agendas.
00:25How can Malaysia position itself in the BRIC?
00:28At the same time, we do not want to be seen as an anti to another bloc.
00:32And how can Malaysia bring our agenda of participation in the BRIC to ASEAN countries?
00:38Because in the ASEAN countries, we have our own economic platform, such as RECAP and APEC.
00:45Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister.
00:48As I said earlier, Mr. Speaker, we have not yet been fully accepted as members of the BRIC.
00:57We are only a country partner.
00:59If we are accepted, the Foreign Minister will bring this matter to the Cabinet.
01:05But we will also bring the members of the BRIC to the Cabinet.
01:08But if we are accepted as full members of the BRIC, we will indeed bring it to the Parliament and discuss it.
01:16Because it is a big decision for the country to participate in the BRIC.
01:21But as I said earlier, Mr. Speaker, the BRIC is not an alliance.
01:28It is a broken club.
01:31There is no treaty, no convention that we need to maintain or comply with.
01:38It is just a club.
01:41So we need to speak more as the Global South.
01:46Because the divide between the North and the South is clearly visible.
01:51We do not see it, especially in our SDGs, in our climate change.
01:56Just recently, in COP29, we should have received a donation from a developed country that destroyed their environment 100 years ago.
02:06Their contribution should have been US$1 trillion.
02:09They only gave US$300 billion.
02:12This is something that we regret.
02:15Their promise during the Paris Agreement, during the COP in Glasgow, COP28,
02:20everyone said they would contribute.
02:23This is a very serious cost for us to manage this climate change.
02:29It is very expensive and costs a lot.
02:32So in the BRIC, we do not trust our role in OIC.
02:40We do not reduce our role in NAM.
02:43We do not reduce our role in APEX.
02:46Just recently, we were invited as a country that is present in APEX and G20.
02:53As a guest of the Brazilian government.
02:56And we voiced the same thing, namely how the divide between developed countries and the Global South is very clear.
03:04What role do developed countries have to help?
03:07Instead of pointing fingers, they should work together to manage climate change or global warming.
03:17So, in response to PULAI, we do not reduce our role.
03:22And it will increase even more, especially in the field of economy.
03:26We will open our markets.
03:29Because we also need to do what is known as de-risk policy.
03:34We do not need to rely too much on our traditional markets.
03:39If anything happens to the market, we will fall.
03:43Therefore, we need to expand and diversify our markets so that whatever happens,
03:50because in an uncertain geopolitical situation today,
03:54the world is in turmoil,
03:56we cannot continue with our one country system that becomes our ally and buys our goods.
04:06But we need to expand and diversify our goods market.
