00:00Our beloved Kevin Clash.
00:30First of all, thank you so much. I watch it every day with my four-year-old and you're a part of my life and thank you for this.
00:43Oh, thank you.
00:44Do you ever get in the coat back?
00:46Do I ever get one?
00:47Do you ever buy your dad a coat?
00:48Did I ever buy a coat?
00:51I think I've done very well with my dad.
00:55It wasn't a matter that he wanted a coat. He loves to go fishing.
01:00As a matter of fact, when I did Elmo and Grouch Land, I brought the whole family down and put them in a bed and breakfast.
01:08The line producer of the movie had this wonderful boat and so I got to go out on the boat and go fishing with my dad.
01:17It was cool.
01:18That was about 2,000 coats right there.
01:22Thanks for bringing so much joy to kids and adults alive.
01:25Oh, thank you.
01:26When you're Kevin and Elmo at the same time, is that kind of a split consciousness and is there kind of a spiritual element to that?
01:33When I'm Kevin and Elmo at the same time?
01:35Yeah, kind of.
01:36There are a couple points when maybe you're, you know, like when you were showing the girl around and one of you said thank you and Elmo responded, you're welcome.
01:43Sometimes that happens, yeah.
01:45Sometimes, you know, I respond.
01:46It was funny.
01:47I did a Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me.
01:50I did that wonderful NPR and, you know, you get the, I was in my pajamas at my apartment, you know, you can do it on the phone, you know, just do it.
01:58And, matter of fact, Elmo made me lose one out of the three.
02:02I got two right and Elmo got one right.
02:04But, uh, I know how to, um, laugh with my, my laugh and Elmo's laugh quickly so it sounds like both of them were doing it at the same time.
02:16And so they kind of freaked out about that.
02:18So sometimes, I mean, it's, it's, you know, I mean, people, working like, with people like Ricky Gervais and, you know, and all these wonderful comedians and stuff, I mean, you can hear me laugh and sometimes through Elmo because I can't, you know, I can't help it.
02:33So, I mean, it's, it's, it's, it's a, it's a wonderful thing to be able to, you know, I mean, I never knew that this would have happened to me.
02:40Um, and, uh, it just kept, it keeps going and going and going and it's, it's been wonderful.
02:46Yeah, wait, wait, wait, thank you for that.
02:48Is Elmo here?
02:49Yes, he is.
02:50He will be making an appearance very soon.
02:54Yeah, you know what, uh, uh, you know, I started, again, I started at 10 years old.
03:00And, um, when Leslie, um, called me up about this little kid in Atlanta, I mean, it just, it was like this mirror image that happened.
03:09And so we had to see him and, and, you know, um, wow.
03:15His mom?
03:16Woo!
03:16It's emotional for me because she's so much like my mom.
03:24She is, um, I mean, when I saw, excuse me, when I saw him today, I was like, oh.
03:30Because she, she's so supportive of this child.
03:35She's, you know, when we said, come up, you know, right now, you know, come up and he said, oh, yes.
03:40And when we said we were going to be here, she said, oh, yes.
03:43Bring, you know, like my mom got on the phone, call PBS, you know, MPT, you know, PBS station in Baltimore.
03:49She didn't know what she was doing.
03:50She called.
03:50She knew that I wanted to meet Kermit.
03:52She asked him, could she get in touch with us.
03:54This lady, this young lady, I mean, she's just phenomenal.
03:57She's just like my mom.
03:58And, um, you know, I've got to bring Tau up.
04:01Come on up, Tau.
04:05And your mom, and your mom, come on up.
04:08Lisa, come on up.
04:14Yeah, Tau.
04:15This is the next, the next puppet here.
04:32She wore, she wore red for me, too.
04:37Any other questions?
04:38Any other questions?
04:39I used to build puppets and stamp until 1, 2 o'clock in the morning.
04:42I know Tau is, you know,
04:43It took 3 o'clock in the morning.
04:44It took 3 o'clock in the morning.
04:45I wake up to those in the bathroom,
04:47and I have to get in there and yell at him.
04:48Turn my lights off.
04:49At least he's, at least he took some time out to use the bathroom.
04:55Okay, right there.
04:56And a question about what happens on the set.
04:58I was really curious how much,
04:59how much of what happens on Sesame is scripted,
05:01and how much of it is improv?
05:03A lot of it's scripted.
05:04We have phenomenal writers.
05:06Matter of fact, I wanted to give a shout-out to a gem of ours
05:08who just passed away.
05:10Tony Geis, who was, uh, in his 80s, I think,
05:13and he, he actually wrote, uh, uh, Elmo's song.
05:18And, uh, it turned into Elmo's world.
05:20He was wonderful.
05:21You'd see Tony, and, and that smile would come over his face,
05:24and you'd see him turn into a 5-year-old.
05:26He was amazing.
05:27He started, like, uh, like, 25 years ago on the show,
05:30writing the show and writing the songs on the show,
05:33and he's going to be sorely missed.
05:35We loved him dearly,
05:35and he was definitely a part of the legacy
05:37and the success of Sesame Street over so many years.
05:42Where is it?
05:43Okay, right there.
05:43Okay.
05:45Right here.
05:46Okay, okay.
05:47Now 50, so it's going to take me a little time to get it.
05:52No, look at that.
05:53Look at that.
05:53Okay.
05:53Here.
06:03Elmo loves you.
06:03Come on, come on.
06:11Hello.
06:14She's a little girl.
06:16Oh, really?
06:21She's going to be beautiful.
06:23Elmo can see her.
06:28Bye.
06:28Bye.
06:28So this is a little red one.
06:35It was so much fun to, uh, you know,
06:37this puppet was so very, very simple.
06:42Um, at the beginning, it was just a fur tube.
06:44Nothing was happening with the hands.
06:46Now there's bendable hands.
06:48Um, and one thing that,
06:49he had no legs either.
06:51And one thing that Elmo was excited about
06:53is that he got a butt.
06:57Yeah, Elmo has a butt.
06:58What are you doing up here?
07:05Yes.
07:05Do you use, are there like multiple Elmo puppets?
07:09Or is that the one?
07:10No, I have nine.
07:11I have nine Elmo, Elmo's.
07:13Uh, this, this one is the one that I go out and, uh,
07:16and, and, uh, and, you know, do, do appearances with.
07:23Hello.
07:24Hey there.
07:25How are you?
07:26I'm great.
07:28You?
07:29Okay.
07:32No, this is going to, he, he's, we're going to,
07:34he's going to hang out with us at Sesame Street a lot.
07:37Yeah.
07:37Do you ever get into doing other characters
07:39and not doing that?
07:41You know, um, you know, I've done a lot, um, you know,
07:44because I love Sesame Street,
07:45but I, I'm so happy that I've gotten to do shows
07:48like Dinosaurs, you know, I play the baby.
07:50I'm the baby, gotta love me.
07:53I love doing that.
07:55And I love doing Splinter, performing Splinter for, uh, Ninja Turtles.
07:59Hello, how are you?
08:02So I've gotten to perform some wonderful characters over so many years.
08:05And I love Hoots and, and of course, Natasha, when I get the performer.
08:09So, you know, I've gotten to do a lot of variety of different things with, uh, with puppets too.
08:13So, I'm glad about that.
08:18So, listen, guys, go and get something to eat.
08:20Everybody, hi.
08:22Hi, everybody.
08:22I love you.
