00:00It's not the tipping. It's these new businesses we never used to tip using the iPad against us.
00:04I hate when they turn the iPad around and there's questions.
00:09Okay, y'all, like, if you don't want to tip, don't tip, but move on.
00:13A debate around the rise of iPad tipping has been happening online.
00:16So I'm here in New York City to ask people where they stand.
00:19I feel very forced to do it anywhere I go, even at my local smoke shop.
00:24After I'm done getting a pre-roll, he'll flip it around and be like, no.
00:28Sometimes at coffee shops, I'll do it if, like, I really like the person who made my coffee.
00:33The coffee, it's already eight dollars.
00:35Then if I tip, it's going to be ten.
00:37Like, I don't want to buy the coffee anymore.
00:39Here is your water.
00:40Now, if you could just do me a favor and tap one of these really cute looking buttons.
00:44Um.
00:45Uh-oh.
00:46I can no longer financially support my dog.
00:49It should not have to be up to the client to make sure that your employees are paid,
00:54but that's the society that we live in.
00:56So be a pal, tip karma.
00:58Sometimes I feel bad when I don't.
00:59So I kind of, like, pretend that I'm thinking of, like, a price to put,
01:02and then I press the zero one.
01:04But I don't know.
01:05I feel bad.
01:05I feel like people should, but when I don't have it, I don't have it.
01:14The only reason why you're this upset about, like, this iPad tipping situation
01:19is if you feel guilty if they turn that around.
01:22Like, you don't have to.
01:24So if you feel guilty, that's completely on you.
01:26Just tip.
01:27Tip.
01:28What's the big deal?
01:29I don't think anyone's paid that well, period.
01:31That's why I always tip.
01:32Yeah, it's not like baristas are cleaning up in New York or anywhere else.
01:37Tip.
01:37Who can afford to live most places?
01:39So tip.
01:41See, it's a no-brainer, no-brainer.
01:42As a barista, I just want to let you know, like, if you do tip, I'm so grateful.
01:46Like, it makes my whole day.
01:48And when I go out, I'm able to tip my waiters and waitresses
01:52accordingly because I make the funds that I do.
01:55It does make me feel pressured like it's part of the purchase when they have the iPad.
01:59And now I have to add that.
02:00And it's an option, but it does make it feel like it's part of the purchase.
02:05As a business matter, I think that it's genius to have, like, this pressure to give more tips.
02:11Most of the people that I know, they feel bad about having to turn that around.
02:15Like, no one's going to give you, like, I promise.
02:17If you don't want to tip, don't tip.
02:20If you're going to be angry about tipping, don't tip.
02:23They undercut themselves where I've seen the tip that I was going to give
02:28is a lot higher than the three options they give you.
02:31And when they do custom tip, I'm too lazy.
02:34I'm not going to go custom tip.
02:36You know what I mean?
02:37So I'll just go for one of the three options.
02:40And a lot of times, it's less than I would have tipped.
02:42I feel kind of pressured because it gets a little awkward because it's like now at this point,
02:49like, I'm going to seem like a bad person if I don't tip.
02:52And then I'm just like, oh, whatever.
02:54I'm never going to be here anymore.
02:55They're never going to see me.
02:56So it's whatever.
02:57And usually, I just hit the zero.
02:59It's nice to have the percentages there also.
03:02But I always tip regardless if it's on iPad or not.
03:05And if, like, someone's making me coffee, I'm not making it at home.
03:09So yeah, I would still tip a dollar at the least.
03:12I think you should tip depending on your situation in life.
03:15I work in the service industry, like, currently.
03:18I think tipping is wonderful.
03:19And it's like blessings you spread.
03:21I'm older now.
03:21So I'm always like, here's a dollar.
03:24You know, here's two.
03:25I just want you to know.
03:26We got fro-yo last night.
03:27And it was serve yourself.
03:29Then when I go to pay, the kid at the register is like,
03:31it's just going to ask you a question.
03:32And the question says, how much tip do you want to leave?
03:34It was literally serve yourself.
03:36Anybody's be getting a tip around here.
03:37It's me.
03:38It depends on the establishment.
03:39Like, if it's the obvious, like, the yogurt,
03:42where you're filling up your own cup, it's like, come on now.
03:45But, like, coffee shops, I definitely get it, yeah.
03:48I don't really think about it.
03:49It's kind of if I have it, if I don't.
03:50If I have it, then I'll do it regardless,
03:52even if I'm, like, self-serving.
03:53But yeah, if I don't, I don't.
03:55Specifically, like, small businesses.
03:57That's where I usually do like to tip if I can.
03:59I think it's more just about the timing in which the product
04:03or service that you ordered is received
04:05and the amount of effort that takes place.
04:07Sometimes it could be no effort, but just the person's embrace
04:10or the way that they treated you,
04:11the customer service was nice.
04:13Working in especially food service in New York City
04:16is like, you have to deal with so much.
04:19So if you're making, whether it's the state minimum wage
04:23or the federal minimum wage, you deserve tips regardless.
04:27Minimum wage isn't high enough.
04:28We also work in the service industry.
04:31I just assume that no one is making enough money.
04:32So when I go into a place and I see the iPad swivel around,
04:35I'm like, oh, they're not being paid a lot per hour.
04:38It's weird because it's always like the fast food joints
04:41where you don't really want to tip them, you know,
04:44but then you realize they're making minimum wage,
04:46so you want to, but I don't think it's a good idea.
04:51You know what?
04:52Now that I think about it, it might be a good idea
04:54at the fast food spots
04:55because these people are making almost no money.
