They never thought anyone would hear their debut song "Drinkee." The song "Best Friend" wasn't really written about their friendship.

00:00we're always pushing it and it's important to us to always keep pushing it and like what is
00:04sophie tucker will always be evolving and changing just like who we are but it's some good
00:13that's all i'll say
00:20hey i'm tucker and i'm sophie and we're sophie tucker
00:23we're gonna be backtracking through some of our songs over the years
00:30so
00:39drinky was the first song that we ever wrote we wrote it while we were still in college
00:44and it was the basically reason that we decided to form a band because we made it and we were
00:49like wait this is really interesting we really like this yeah the vision was kind of like
00:56let's take a raw guitar riff and put it into dance music and then
01:04sophie was like i'm studying portuguese right now i'm working with this poet he was visiting brown
01:11at the time when we were there shout out chacal shout out chacal and we just kind of put all
01:17these ideas together in one to make this sort of weird what we thought was like an artsy
01:23song that we didn't think many people would ever hear but we really liked it
01:35we made best friend in tucker's parents garage and it was one of those ones that we made and
01:42didn't like think that much about tucker had a bass line and a beat going and i walked in the
01:48garage and i was like i love my best friend so much i just got off the phone with her her name's
01:54mary and it's not about our friendship which is a side note although it's kind of become about
02:00everything yeah it is at the time were we even best friends i don't know now we are
02:06maybe i wasn't your best friend but you were probably my best friend
02:19so the inspiration for purple hat was it's a very literal song we were on tour i think with odessa
02:26actually we had an after party of our own at audio club in san francisco and the party was
02:34so crazy it was called an animal talk party we used to have them a lot and people would
02:37wear these masks and it was just like animal animal masks animal masks it got so crazy
02:43there was literally like people on top of people it was so slammed i was wearing a purple hat and
02:49a cheetah print shirt and the next morning we were sitting on the tour bus and we were like
02:56what just happened that was so crazy we felt so inspired we were like we have to write about that
03:02party and we literally wrote the song about that party
03:13so that was right after the pandemic or like right after our long period of quarantine and
03:21just being in our house for a long time and that song really came from having grace with ourselves
03:28for you know maybe not being our our best selves while stuck in a house for over a year
03:35and just knowing that like sometimes you know you hurt the people that you love the most when you're
03:40hurting and we were seeing it happen you know with people that we love all around the world
03:45where people were just struggling during that time so it's sort of like a song to be like you're
03:51it's okay like of course there's something wrong with you like there's something wrong with the
03:54world like there's something wrong with everyone one of us and let's just have a little have a
03:59little grace
04:10but it also can mean women who like women but it's said in a negative way and so we wanted to flip
04:16that on its head and make it into a celebratory song and yeah we were in brazil earlier this year
04:23and we filmed a music video in rio which is my favorite city ever
04:28i guess i just said that about new york but rio and new york are just both the best cities ever
04:32for different reasons um and no one's gonna believe you no one's gonna believe me because
04:38i have two favorite cities yeah you're just everyone in rio is gonna say bull everyone
04:43in new york is a bull unless you've been to both those cities and then you're like wait
04:47i get it there's a certain energy so different yeah but also especially in the summer like the
04:52kind of like openness and you're just like walking around and you can like happen upon something and
04:57then like there's a party on the street here and then you're like one wow i'll pick one all right
05:03go for it new york what's up so sweaty in rio i was just sweating for like three weeks straight
05:11i feel like and like it's we were also there during the hottest time in carnival when you're
05:17like not sleeping and you're just partying the whole time it's great but then it's kind of like
05:22icky all right hot take rio very hot take yeah because rio has the city energy that new york has
05:33in the sense that you could like stumble upon something and you're just like walking around
05:37and there's just like a plethora of things to do but rio also has a beach rio also has some of the
05:44most spectacular nature you've ever seen and i also get to speak portuguese when i'm there
05:52you
