00:00Some Republicans and Democrats want to ban the word Latinx from state documents,
00:04but their reasons for wanting to do so could not be more different.
00:07So why does each party dislike the term?
00:09Ruth can explain in less than 60 seconds.
00:11Back in January, Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders banned Latinx
00:14from state documents in Arkansas, calling it ethnically insensitive.
00:18And other Republicans have followed suit,
00:20calling for a ban on the word as a way to defy liberal wokeism.
00:24Meanwhile, Democrats in Connecticut introduced state legislation to ban
00:28Latinx from government documents for a different reason.
00:31One of the representatives called the term offensive and unnecessary.
00:34And others argue that using an x instead of saying Latino or Latina
00:38is a way to whitewash the Spanish language.
00:40Some argue the term is cultural appropriation
00:43and an Americanized way of talking about the Spanish language.
00:46According to a 2019 Pew Research poll,
00:48less than 25% of Latino or Hispanic U.S. adults had heard of the term Latinx,
00:53and only 3% used it.
