Some are calling Disney’s newest casting of Tinker Bell “lazy” representation.
Transcript
00:00Disney's newest film has sparked a discussion about the company's pattern of recasting old
00:04roles to non-white actors, rather than introducing new diverse ones. It started
00:08with the announcement that Yara Shahidi will portray Tinkerbell in the upcoming Peter Pan
00:12and Wendy film. Many praised the move, similar to when it was announced that Halle Bailey would play
00:17Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Some, however, pointed out that rather than producing new
00:20stories of diversity and inclusion, Disney is developing a pattern of recycling and recasting
00:25existing roles. Quote, The reason studios make beloved characters black in the live-action
00:30adaptations is so they don't have to go to the trouble of actually giving special,
00:34brand new unique characters made from scratch to black people, one Twitter user wrote. Others
00:38echoed the sentiment, calling the casting lazy and a move that prioritizes image more than
00:43inclusivity.
