00:00In Iran, demonstrations are multiplying over the death of Masa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian
00:05woman who died in custody after she was arrested for allegedly violating Iran's hijab and modesty
00:11law. A total of six people have been killed during the demonstrations in Kurdistan province
00:16and Kermanshah province, according to official figures. Men and women took to the streets to
00:20burn hijabs in protest. Several hundred people chanted slogans against the authorities. In
00:25response, police made arrests and used tear gas to disperse the crowds. The acting U.N.
00:30High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif expressed concern over the death of Amini and
00:35quote, the violent reaction of the security forces to the demonstrations. She called for
00:40an impartial and independent investigation. In Iran, the wearing of the hijab has been
00:44mandatory since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979.
