Amid fuel protests and gang warfare, the UN says Haiti is facing "a humanitarian catastrophe."
Transcript
00:00Looting, fuel shortages, closed hospitals, escalating violence. Here is everything that
00:04is happening right now in Haiti. Earlier this week, UN officials said the Caribbean country
00:08is virtually ungovernable and faces a humanitarian catastrophe. On September 11th, Prime Minister
00:14Ariel Henry announced an increase in fuel prices as subsidies were costing the government too much.
00:19Since then, violent demonstrations have taken place across Haiti. Transportation is no longer
00:23available, roads are blocked by barricades, and embassies in Port-au-Prince are closed.
00:27Families are unable to get food or water, and the start of the school year has been postponed
00:31to October 3rd. An economic crisis, a gang crisis, and a political crisis have converged into a
00:37humanitarian catastrophe, said the UN Special Representative in Haiti, Helen Lalim. This
00:41humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by the violence of armed gangs. The UN system in Haiti estimates
00:47at least 1.5 million people have been directly impacted by recent gang violence. In July,
00:52the Security Council passed a resolution calling to ban the transfer of small arms to gangs
00:56operating in Haiti.
