Latest TV: Brighton face tough trip to Bournemouth as Premier League returns
Transcript
00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:31We had a lot of positive things, now it's very important that all the players come back in a good mood, come back in a good shape and remember quickly what is our identity, what is our culture, because I think they experience different philosophies, different things and now it's very important that we immediately stick back to our principles, to our identity and how we want to play.
00:56I think you always have to work for the momentum, you have to work to get the momentum so it's always a new game and no matter if there's a break between the games or not, the game starts from zero and you have to go into the game and do the things you can influence on the maximum.
01:17For example, winning, personal choice, running more than the opponent, playing more intense than the opponent, so you really have to work for this momentum so you can't say we won against City and now the momentum will keep going.
01:30It's about fighting for momentum, it's a new game, it's a different challenge, it's a really big challenge because for me Bournemouth is one of the strongest teams at the moment because they can play very intense, they run a lot, they have individual quality, they are in good shape so for me at the moment one of the best teams in the league.
01:52It's a very, very big challenge for us and that's why it's very important for our mindset that we go into this game and don't say we won against City, we have the momentum. No, it's completely the opposite.
02:05I think it's an even harder challenge so we need to have the mindset to go into this game, fight for the small things, fight for winning the personal jewels and then you get what you deserve.
02:17At the moment Bournemouth deserve to win and they also deserve to win against Arsenal. For me one of the strongest teams because they have the ability to suffer, they have also the ability to hurt a team who defends because they have great one-against-one players.
02:38They have a great striker, they have Semenyuk, they have Kluivert, so individual quality with the wingers and on top of that they have great players in the back. With Genesi you can open a game with his passes, with Christy in the midfield.
02:56Very strong team, very compact team so for me it's no surprise that they beat these two big clubs. I love derbies but I didn't hear yet that this is a derby so it's something new for me but if it's a derby I'm really looking forward to it. But I'm also looking forward to it if it's not a derby.
03:18How important is set-piece management to you?
03:30Game-changer and match-winner. I think like this you can describe set-pieces and that's why it's a very, very important part of the game.
03:41I think it's very important to really stay focused on the process in this time because you have a lot of games. For sure you will also get set-packs but then it's so important to stick to your style of play, to try to, even when you have such an amount of games, to try to develop the players, to try to develop the style of play, to improve the players because this will be the way from Brighton.
04:07It's important to not get distracted by the amount of games. We know that this period is very important for us and we try to use it the best way we can. I think the table shows that it's very competitive, that it's unpredictable, that it's intense and we have to be ready for that.
04:30I'm Henry Bryant and I'm joined with Albion writer Darren Howard. We've just come out of the pre-match press conference for the Brighton v Albion Bournemouth game. Bournemouth away for Brighton. What are you thinking about this one Darren?
04:44Very strong at home. They've already beaten Manchester City in Arsenal.
04:48Did Fabian Persler say anything about that international break and actually wanting to go full throttle after that amazing 2-1 victory for the Albion?
04:57He did. He was very keen. He always stresses after the international break that players have to readapt. When they come back to Brighton he wants them to adapt quickly and then get used to the Premier League and the rigours and the demands, the unique demands of the Premier League that it faces.
05:12I think they've learned from previous international breaks and he's learned how to juggle his squad as well coming back from these. I don't see any reason why Brighton should have any hangover and I think they'll be in good shape with the players that they've got coming back from injury hopefully. Matt O'Reilly, Jal Pedro should be available. Carlos Bolivar should hopefully start. They should be good.
05:39It seemed like good news on the injury front and a unique story that came out of the press conference was the fact that Fabian Persler organised a bingo night for him and his staff. I think not many reporters thought that was going to be coming out of that press conference but I guess it shows you how comfortable he is and how he's putting his own personal touch on getting to know not just the players but the staff involved in the club.
06:02Yes, that's right. He's very big on team bonding and making it more of a community feel as well. He feels the stresses of the Premier League are obvious. It's a high-pressure situation and demands to win, to improve, to be the best are constant. These bingo nights seem to be good fun. It's just a release. It's a chance to take off the pressure, have a chat with the players on a more comfortable level.
06:31He's talking about situations where there could be new fathers, there could be new different situations, all sorts of different situations that they perhaps don't get to talk about in the day-to-day rigour of the grind of the Premier League. It's just a nice chance to chill out and enjoy each other's company. It sounds good fun.
06:53Definitely. It's strictly business for the weekend with Albion away to Bournemouth. Perzner was also mentioning that he praised Uri Ola, the Bournemouth manager, for what he's done. You can see why. They've done really well, they've signed some really key players, a few more tactics and got some really good results this season already against Man City and Arsenal.
07:15Yes, for sure. They're a really strong team and you can't not be impressed by the job that he's done since arriving. I don't think many people knew about him before he came to the Premier League. He did really well last season and they've carried on the good work again this season. I think it's going to be a very, very tough game. It's really intense. It's a 12,000-seater stadium but it's very tight, compact and you really feel the atmosphere there. It's quite an intimate setting for football.
07:44Brighton have struggled there in the past, so they haven't always had the best results there. They've got to go there face up to that and just really give a good account of themselves.
07:56Definitely. There you have it. Can Fabian Herzler redeem Roberto Serbi's 3-0 loss that occurred last season? It's the Battle of the Piers and all to find out. Cheers, Darren.
08:07Speak to you soon.
08:08Thanks, Henry.
08:14Bye.
08:44Welcome to another episode of the Goal Malfaction podcast, where we take a look at all the latest goings on at Brighton and Hove Albion and Crawley Town.
08:51I'm Mark Dunford and this week I'm joined by Brighton writer Darren Howard and Sam Morton, who covers both the Seagulls and the Reds.
08:57In the second half, Darren will take over as host to ask me questions about Crawley Town.
09:02The international break may have been in full swing, but there are still plenty of Albion talking points to chew over.
09:08We'll bring you the latest from the Seagulls, including a preview to their Premier League trip to Bournemouth this Saturday.
09:13Plus, we'll bring you the news from Crawley Town, who picks up a battling League One point at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
09:19You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk forward slash sport.
09:25And you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and Freeview channel 262.
09:31You may also be watching on latest TV. So thank you for tuning in.
09:35So during the international break, Brighton striker Evan Ferguson was on the score sheet for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Finland 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League
09:42on Thursday evening. Only Robbie Keane and David Connolly have scored more goals for Ireland before the age of 21.
09:48Ferguson also started for Ireland in their 5-0 thumping by England, but we'll gloss over that.
09:53Should we gloss over that? I don't know.
09:56But it was a great goal by Ferguson against the Finns, wasn't it, Darren?
09:59And good to see him finding a bit goal scoring form.
10:02Yeah, really pleased. Really pleased for Evan Ferguson.
10:05He's had a tough time of late. He's he's had this foot injury, which he took a while longer than expected to to come back from.
10:13And then he's he hasn't really been able to make an impact on Fabian Hurlitz's team.
10:17He's he's sort of seen as just a step behind Danny Welbeck, Joe Pedro and now Georginio Rutter as well, who came in from Leeds during the summer.
10:28So he's had to bide his time.
10:30And he scored. He came on again for Brighton in the now infamous sort of 2-2 draw against Wolves.
10:37And he actually scored the second goal after coming on as a sub, which we all thought was a winner.
10:41But then Wolves turned it around. So so that was, you know, personally, that was a very good achievement for him to get the goal.
10:47But he's he's had more minutes for Ireland than he has actually for Brighton in the last in the last few months.
10:55And it's probably not a situation. Yeah. Yeah. It's a situation he wouldn't want to continue.
11:01I'm sure he's going to be pushing for more game time, but he played really well for Ireland.
11:05So, yeah, he made his debut 18 years old for Ireland.
11:10He's now got 18 caps with 13 starts and he's got four goals and one assist from those outings.
11:17So that's, you know, that's a pretty good strike ratio for a youngster breaking into international football.
11:23So so it's clear that, you know, he's a talented player and he's probably Ireland's best bet of having an established goal scorer for the next,
11:31you know, potentially the next decade, you know, or so if he continues as he's going.
11:36So so they've got big hopes for him. They're going to want him to start playing regularly for Brighton.
11:41But we'll see whether he's actually involved against Bournemouth because Brighton have got a lot of players back.
11:47But but, yeah, encouraging that he's playing well for Ireland and great that he's among the goals.
11:54It's great news. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
11:57Another Brighton player who caught the eye during the international break isn't actually at the club yet.
12:02Midfielder Diego Gomez is set to join Albion in January.
12:05And he played a starring role in Paraguay's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Argentina, alongside future team mate Juventus on Thursday evening.
12:13For those who don't know the player, Sam, tell us a bit about Gomez,
12:16please, and how will he fit into Fabian Herzog's side?
12:20Well, first of all, I should point out that it sounds like Brighton, again, a bit of a feisty player because I've looked at him.
12:25He was actually sent off in the following game against Bolivia.
12:28Oh, really? Oh, wow. I think he was on the bench, I think. Violent conduct, I read.
12:33Haven't actually seen the incident, but yeah, it's yeah, potentially a bit of a feisty player.
12:38Brighton have got on their hands there. But yeah, he's I think another really talented, another talented player.
12:43Obviously, as you mentioned, we can't link up with Julio Enciso, who actually scored the equalising goal against Bolivia.
12:49So Brighton seem to be making waves everywhere, in every corner of the globe at the moment.
12:55But yeah, in terms of Diego Gomez, he is at Inter Miami at the moment.
13:00He's a versatile 21-year-old midfielder who stayed with me at Miami until the end of their season and has obviously played alongside Lionel Messi.
13:08Why would you leave Miami to go to Brighton?
13:13Anyone's guess, but I think it's yeah, for him, it's obviously a massive step up to the Premier League and to show what he can do.
13:21And I was reading a report from ESPN journalist Roberto Rojas, who basically describes Gomez as a Swiss army knife.
13:29He's able to do so much. He can track back and defend, lay off assists and he can score.
13:34What kind of team doesn't want to have that kind of player? When he does come to the Premier League, it'll be a big jump.
13:38But for all of the challenges he's faced, such as injuries, he's come back better.
13:41And it's a credit to what he brings to the table. Whatever position any manager wants to play him in, he'll strive.
13:46You're getting a player that can do so much, the spirit of the team from midfield.
13:50And it sounds like he'll be deployed across the midfield, featuring mainly centrally and on the left wing.
13:55He's been capped at senior international level, as we've mentioned, by Paraguay since making his debut in 2022.
14:01And he's represented his country at the summer's Paris Olympics, starting all four matches.
14:05And he also capped in the side as Paraguay reached the quarterfinals.
14:09So, yeah, I think, as you mentioned, he's a good role in the 2-1 win over Argentina in the international break.
14:15Clearly, he's got a lot of talent and it'll be interesting to see how he fits in at Brighton in a team with obviously lots of attacking talent.
14:22So it'll be interesting to see what he adds.
14:24Yeah, I know. He sounds like a good prospect, doesn't he?
14:27Yassin Ayari has been on international duty with Sweden, starting both games against Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
14:34The midfielder has begun to prove himself at Brighton, despite the club's big money signings
14:38and his own challenging loan spells in the championship with Coventry and Blackburn last season.
14:43How impressed have you been with Ayari, Darren? Surprise package for Albion this season, do you think?
14:47Oh, yeah, definitely. I think most fans and most people who follow Albion would have expected another loan this season.
14:55As you say, he struggled a bit on loan with Blackburn and Coventry last season.
14:59And it was interesting to see what they were going to do with him this year.
15:04I was expecting another loan to the championship or maybe to a European club this season.
15:09But he made a big impact in pre-season on Fabian Herlitsson. He played very well in the tournament in Japan.
15:18And I think that's when Herzl realized that he's got a player that he can use in the Premier League this season.
15:25He's very, very aggressive on the press. He's good on the ball as well.
15:32And he's been a real plus for Brighton this season. They've had a couple of injuries in the midfield area.
15:38And he's been one player who's been, well, I say that, but then he was injured in the final game against Sweden.
15:45He hobbled off against Azerbaijan in the last game.
15:50So we're going to have to see if he's fit to play against Bournemouth.
15:54But as far as his season goes so far, he's been great.
15:57And I loved his comments when we did a piece on him this week.
16:02And he was saying that he said he didn't care who they brought.
16:07He knew they were going to be signing players, but he was going to work harder.
16:10He was going to train harder and really put himself than anybody else.
16:14He said he didn't care who they signed. He was going to really put down a marker.
16:18And he's done just that. And I think that's quite encouraging to see that despite the big money signings
16:24and there's sometimes pressure on the manager.
16:26Oh, we've just paid 30 million for this guy. We need to put him in.
16:30But no, he's stuck with Iari and he's been rewarded for his hard work.
16:35So I hope he's fit to play against Bournemouth. But he's been very good.
16:39Yeah, very good this season.
16:42Yeah. And you mentioned Bournemouth there.
16:44Brighton returned to Premier League action this week with a trip to Bournemouth
16:47as Fabian Herzle looks ready to unleash the attacking duo Jal Pedro and Jorginho Rutter
16:52for the first time this season.
16:54How excited are you to see these two start in tandem at the Seagulls, Sam?
16:58And what does Jal Pedro's return mean for the Seagulls?
17:01Yeah, it's a massive, massive plus to have Jal Pedro back in action, really.
17:05Obviously, we saw his impact against Man City when he came on as a substitute.
17:09And he's been so brilliant for Brighton, really, ever since he signed.
17:13And he's only got better and better.
17:15And it's a shame he's obviously had those couple of injuries of late.
17:18But he seems to come back stronger every time.
17:20And having him back is only a positive thing.
17:23And he can really help Brighton pick up some more points starting at Bournemouth.
17:27And if he does start in this one, I'm really confident that Brighton can get the result.
17:32And to link up with Rutter would be a real nice thing to see as well.
17:36But don't forget Welbeck, who's obviously been the star striker of the season.
17:41So I would really like to see all three of them.
17:43I think that would be something to see.
17:45That would be crazy, wouldn't it?
17:47Welbeck up front and Jal Pedro and Rutter maybe just in behind or something on those lines.
17:52I think they're such versatile players.
17:54And then kind of interlink and change up where they play.
17:57I think that's a real preposition for Brighton to get all three of those playing together.
18:02Because we've already seen Rutter and Welbeck, the partnership they've formed.
18:05It's been brilliant.
18:06So if we can get Pedro to just add to that, the signs are only positive.
18:10So yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing how they get on.
18:13And just a shout out to Simon Odinga as well, who has obviously been limited to first team minutes this season.
18:19But whenever he's played, he's been quality.
18:21And he got another great goal in the international break for the Ivory Coast as well.
18:24So yeah, keen to see him get some minutes this weekend as well.
18:28But just go to show, we've mentioned Evan Ferguson as well, just the attacking talent.
18:33It's incredible.
18:35And if you have them all fit, then teams will rightly be quite scared of playing Brighton.
18:40Yeah. Will it be the new Salah, Mane, Firmino, Rutter, Welbeck and Pedro, do you think?
18:46Could well be, yeah.
18:49Excellent.
18:50Albion's opponents, Bournemouth, sit 12th in the Premier League,
18:52but have already taken some big scalps at home this season, including Man City and Arsenal.
18:57How do you see it going, Darren?
19:00It's going to be a tough one.
19:01It's such an intense little atmosphere there.
19:04There's only sort of, you know, Vitality Stadium, I think it's sort of 12, 13,000 capacity.
19:09It's really sort of tight and, you know, enclosed.
19:12And they play at such a pace under Areola.
19:16They run more, they sprint more than most teams.
19:20And it's going to be a very tough outing, especially after the international break,
19:24where, you know, you've got the likes of Estu Pinan and Idinga coming back from Africa,
19:29and South America and then into two degrees on the South Coast.
19:32It's going to be quite a change for those two.
19:36But I actually asked Fabian today about the three players up front,
19:44Welbeck, Jorginho and Pedro playing together.
19:47And he said, yes, that is a possibility and something that he's considering for the weekend.
19:53But it would be a change of system because they have played with the two wide men,
19:57usually Mitoma and Minte on the flanks with, you know, sometimes two in the middle.
20:03So it would be a change of system.
20:05But with Mitoma coming back from Japan, he's had a long trip back.
20:09He played in both international games.
20:11Minta is only just coming back from injury as well.
20:14Idinga is coming back from his international duty.
20:18So I think that could be a possibility this week with the three of them playing.
20:22So it will be a tweak of formation.
20:25So it will be an interesting one to go.
20:28But it's going to be a tough occasion.
20:31As you say, they've beaten Arsenal, they've beaten Manchester City at the Vitality.
20:35So, yeah, it's going to be a difficult one for Brighton.
20:39And especially if Lewis Dunk isn't fit as well.
20:41I think we spoke to the boss today and he's saying that it's a bit dodgy whether Dunk's going to be fit or not.
20:49So, yeah, it will be an interesting one.
20:52But in Dunk's absence, van Gekker and Igor Hulio have played well in his absence.
