00:00Trams used to be commonplace around Cardiff and they're still in a number of cities across
00:06the UK. They were once one of the most common means of public transport, but a few decades
00:11ago they gradually started to disappear from cities. In recent years, though, people have
00:17seen the viability of trams, so some cities are reintroducing them and Cardiff is set
00:21to become one of those. A new tram line between the city centre and Cardiff Bay has now been
00:27officially confirmed, after funding was allocated by the Welsh Government. It's set to cost
00:34£100 million, partly funded by the council and partly by the Welsh Government, and will
00:38form the latest part of the South Wales Metro, which hopes to integrate existing train lines,
00:44new train lines, trams and other transport into one system which spans across the area
00:48from Barry to Cardiff to the Valleys to Newport, as far out as Monmouth. There are a number
00:55of phases set to be built and, with the first supposed to be finished by the end of 2026,
01:01no firm date, though, is set for the next phases, but it seems to be quite a while until
01:05we will see it officially finished. When it is finished, though, areas across South Wales
01:12will see plenty more transport routes than they already have, with valleys, towns and
01:16suburbs all across the region hopefully being connected on the massive system, which will
01:21have hundreds of miles of train and tram lines. The tram route between Cardiff Centre
01:28and the Bay will be exciting for many people who've missed having trams in the city, and
01:32this will be just the beginning of more exciting developments for the city and surrounding
01:37areas in terms of transport links. There are set to be more trams as part of the system,
01:42aimed at making travel around the city easier. The work going on now behind me is for an
01:48extra platform at the current Cardiff Bay train station, which will allow for an extra
01:52line and electrification and hopefully soon will lead to the tram line being built.
