00:00Work is about to begin on a major scheme of improvements for one of the busiest streets
00:04in North Shields. Bedford Street, one of the main shopping areas in North Shields,
00:08is getting smart new paving, mature trees and modern seating to create an attractive,

00:17will be extended along the length of the street with access for emergency and maintenance vehicles
00:21only. The new layout will improve safety and create extra space outside for cafe seating,
00:26other business use and events. The work is being done by North Tyneside Council's construction
00:32partner, Capita. Access to all shops will be maintained throughout the works and Bedford
00:37Street remains open for business. The Council have spoken to affected premises about their
00:41delivery and access needs and new loading bays are being provided. The clock tower outside the
00:47Beacon Centre will be demolished as part of the scheme to improve sightlines along Bedford Street
00:51and because it's also become a maintenance liability for the Council. North Tyneside
