00:00A trending combat sport called Slap Battle is gaining popularity and aiming to have a regular tournament in the Philippines.
00:07For the details, here's the report from Paolo Salamatin.
00:12It's not just for TV dramas.
00:14If you have a thick skin, this new trending competition called Slap Battle might be for you.
00:19The rules are simple.
00:21If you can deliver the strongest slap, you have the advantage.
00:24The game mechanics, the first to get knocked down or give up, loses.
00:29Slap fights have been popular in other countries for a while, originating in Russia.
00:34It gained international attention in 2017, especially in the US,
00:38where the Power Slap League was established under the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC.
00:43Fitness enthusiast, vlogger, influencer, and actor coach Alexis Tolentino hopes to establish a regular slap battle league in the Philippines.
00:51It's fun because it's very entertaining.
00:54It's different.
00:55It's not common like other regular sports like boxing, basketball, or other mixed martial arts.
01:05This is the first time that this kind of event is happening.
01:10That's why a lot of people are excited.
01:12Slap Battle started gaining public attention in the Philippines in 2022.
01:17However, it received mixed reactions with some saying it's dangerous and inappropriate, especially for younger audiences.
01:24Tolentino, however, dismissed these concerns.
01:28People say that it's more dangerous because there's no defense.
01:33You'll get hit by the impact of the slap.
01:37But even so, if you compare the slap battle to sports like boxing,
01:45where you can reach 12 rounds, even if you're wearing gloves, it's more dangerous.
01:50Because when the gloves hit your head, it shakes your brain.
01:55That's what sometimes causes accidents and comatose.
02:00In slap battle, what hits your face is your skin,
02:04not your face, which is more dangerous.
02:07Tolentino and his team are optimistic about the potential growth of slap battles in the Philippines,
02:12hoping it could eventually become a recognized sport someday.
02:15Paulo Salamatina, from the National TV Network, for the New and Better Philippines.
