00:00It was always going to be controversial.
00:22Hello and welcome to Kenton Climate live on KMTV.
00:26I'm Daisy Page and in this show, we discuss all things related to environmental issues
00:30in the county.
00:32How is climate change impacting Kent?
00:34What are communities in the county doing to tackle it?
00:37And how can you help at home?
00:39Each week we will be taking a deep dive into new environmental issues in the county and
00:44I'll be joined by expert guests.
00:46First night, farmers from Kent have joined thousands of others on the streets of Westminster
00:51to protest changes to the inheritance tax.
00:54Farmers warn that the changes are a threat to their way of life, but the government says
00:59the policy to partially remove the property relief for estates worth over £1m is a balanced
01:06and fair approach.
01:07Oliver Leader de Sacks has been down to the capital to speak with those protesting.
01:14It was always going to be controversial, but the government probably weren't expecting
01:19quite this level of backlash when they announced their budget.
01:24The damp and the cold that has soaked me to the bone has done nothing to dampen the
01:29anger of farmers from Kent and beyond.
01:32There are swarming Parliament Square with anger and frustration at a budget that they
01:37say could kill their way of life.
01:40At the end of the day, it's quite easy, at the end of the day, nobody's going to want
01:43to continue farming.
01:44We, as smaller farmers, cannot survive with that.
01:48Everybody thinks that, or a majority of people may think that we're wealthy, that we're big
01:53landowners, we're not.
01:54I mean, the total land area that I own is 400 acres, the rest of it's rented.
02:00I don't have a succession plan for any of my children, they're all moving out of the
02:04industry.
02:05From 2026, inheritance tax will apply to farms worth more than £1m, the point at which agricultural
02:13property relief ceases to kick in.
02:17But farmers say that while they may be asset rich, that doesn't translate to real terms
02:22wealth and that this budget will now make it impossible to keep family farms going.
02:29We need to get them for a start to raise that threshold.
02:32£1m, all that protects is people from within places like London that come out to places
02:38where I live in Lincolnshire, buy a house and they'll probably buy 20 acres and that's
02:43£1m.
02:44And they're protecting the wrong people, they're not protecting family farms.
02:48If my son wants to go on farming, things have got to change because it will rip a heart
02:52through the Garden of England, the landowners, and they won't be able to continue and it
02:57will be a generational thing.
02:59But it's not just that, it's the whole budget, it's supposed to be an investment budget and
03:04it's just crippling everything associated with this.
03:07By the time speeches started at 11.30, there were simply too many people to march to the
03:13Palace of Westminster as planned.
03:15Though it did not deter the two largest opposition parties from lashing out at the government.
03:21You have had it hard and this government doesn't seem to realise that.
03:25This policy is cruel, it is unfair and it is going to destroy farming as we know it.
03:32But it was a certain TV personality cum farmer who got the biggest cheer of the demonstration.
03:39Now I know a lot of people all across the country in all walks of life took a bit of
03:44a kick on the shin with that budget.
03:47You lot got a knee in the nuts and a light hammer blow to the back of the head.
03:55In a joint statement, both the Chancellor and Environment Secretary said they are steadfast
04:01in their commitment to Britain's farming industry and that the property relief will ensure wealthier
04:08estates pay their fair share.
04:10But with so much anger visible from rural communities like those in Kent, will the government
04:16be able to withstand mounting pressure?
04:19Oliver leads us out to KMTV in Westminster.
04:24Next tonight, a fleet of buses costing more than £34 million have started operating in
04:29Dover.
04:30But some have been critical of them saying they're too expensive and aren't electric.
04:35The vehicles use diesel and some residents want them to be more environmentally friendly.
04:40Finn McDermott went to Dover to see the buses in action.
04:44It's been promised since 2021 an all-electric, zero-emission fleet of buses connecting the
04:49centre of Dover to the nearby town of Whitfield.
04:53It's now 2024 and the bus route launched on the 17th of November last weekend, only with
04:58diesel-powered vehicles instead.
05:00Now it is only temporary.
05:02KCC's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Neil Baker, explained why the service wouldn't
05:06be electric in the beginning.
05:09Stagecoach, the bus operator locally, have had problems with their supply chain.
05:14It's really down to how long it takes them to get hold of the buses.
05:17They've got them on order.
05:18They're due to arrive in summer next year now.
05:20This is obviously outside of Kent County Council's control.
05:23But the decision really has to be made.
05:25Do we let this new infrastructure we have just sit empty with no buses on it for a period?
05:30Or do we actually use diesel buses in the meantime?
05:34It's not ideal.
05:35But of course having people on buses is better than everybody using cars to start with.
05:40He also mentioned the need for the service to support the District Council's transport
05:43plan and to reduce the pressure of heavy traffic on the town's roads.
05:47Well, here's a map of the services, which will start at Dover Priory Station, cutting
05:52through the town centre and looping around the main thoroughfare of Whitfield, with the
05:55route also set to expand north past Richmond Way in the future.
06:00The people of Dover, who use the buses most, didn't seem thrilled about the change, or
06:03the fact the scheme would cost £34 million.
06:08And do you think that £34 million is...
06:10I think it's disgraceful.
06:13£34 million for this is absolutely disgraceful.
06:20Well, we've been watching it being built for a very long time, which has disrupted the
06:24local roads, everything, and a big mess as well.
06:29And I just want to know who is actually going to use it, because that's always the interesting
06:33thing.
06:34Well, it's supposed to have been electric, but it isn't.
06:37Maybe one day it will be.
06:38It was also supposed to open in 2023.
06:43The fast-track project follows the increase of homes in Whitfield and requires new roads
06:46to be built, including a bridge across the A2.
06:50While some may think the price tag is too high, the scheme has received a £22 million
06:54grant from Homes England.
06:55Well, Dover aren't the only Kent town to be doing this, with Dartford and Gravesham also
07:00set to adopt similar schemes to start in April, with zero-emission buses.
07:05Locals hope the new service will fit in with existing routes and, once it's out, that electric
07:09buses will be introduced as soon as possible.
07:12Finn McDermid for KMTV in Dover.
07:14Now, we've recently produced a Kent Tonight special called Beneath Shaun Woods.
07:20It takes us through the country park, exploring 800,000 years of fascinating finds.
07:25It's now available to watch on our website, kmtv.co.uk.
07:30From a World War II RAF base camp to Stone Age flint and a medieval manor, the North
07:35Kent grounds boast a huge range of historical artefacts.
07:38Here's a snippet of the documentary.
07:41Walking around this country park, you might not see anything out of the ordinary.
07:45But beneath your feet or behind a tree, there's thousands of years worth of history.
07:49Back in 2006, a team of archaeologists used a light detection device to get a reading
07:54of Shaun Woods' country park from the air.
07:57As they did, they noticed almost man-made shapes in the earth that were covered by the
08:01trees.
08:02For nearly a decade, the team dug out an entire medieval manor called Randall Manor that dates
08:07back to around the 1200s, belonging to the de Cobham family.
08:10But it wasn't their only find.
08:12They set up shop and used their map to locate more sites of interest, like a massive quarry
08:16from the 1960s that was used to mine clay for the cement industry.
08:20They also knew of an RAF base camp in the south of the park, but had to do some more
08:24digging when they uncovered children's toys.
08:27They discovered the camp's shelters had actually housed displaced families after the war, and
08:31the council even supported them, despite them technically being squatters.
08:36After the war, when the RAF exited the camp, people were coming back from the war and people
08:44that had been bombed out were looking for somewhere to live.
08:47Currently, the team are working on digging out new sections of walls near Randall Manor,
08:51which they think could be part of the de Cobham's agricultural land, as they haven't managed
08:55to find any evidence of human habitation.
08:58It may be that this building was built at the remnants of the other building, the Randall
09:03Manor, which was built in about 1250.
09:06So it may have only been there for about 100 years, and then it went, and then it just
09:13became a farmstead.
09:14Have you ever been round someone's house and they like to show off all the awards their
09:18little kid has won?
09:20This is sort of like that.
09:21When you were a medieval lord or lady and you wanted to show someone around your land,
09:24you might just so happen to pass your massive agricultural fields where you keep all your
09:28animals, a symbol of your wealth, sort of like a Rolex or a Ferrari in the modern day.
09:33While some might question the need for archaeology, families have become reunited with lost memories
09:38thanks to things found beneath the earth, and it's a way for people to know more about
09:41what once happened in their local area.
09:43And as far as Kent goes, it has a lot of history to offer, so you never know what you might
09:48find in your attic or below your feet.
09:52Joining me now is producer of the documentary, Finn.
09:55So how did you approach making this?
09:57Well, one of the interviewees there, JT, I met him at a historical event down at the
10:03Royal Engineers Museum.
10:04I'm very interested in Kent's history, and it's got a lot of it.
10:07And he was talking to me all about archaeology, and a lot of it I didn't really understand,
10:12but it sounded interesting.
10:13So I sort of did a bit more digging, sorry for the pun there, and I just sort of got
10:18into it.
10:19And I didn't realise how much history is actually below the ground.
10:21But I've brought some with me, in fact.
10:23So that is a statue.
10:26It's meant to represent a Mesolithic flint, which is a sort of carved tool of flint.
10:32Now, I have here some of that flint.
10:35It's not the same one, obviously, but this is Mesolithic era.
10:39So this is burnt flint.
10:40So flint came about, I think, 100 million years ago.
10:44It's actually old sea sponge that was sort of deposited and became a layer of mineral
10:48below the ground.
10:49And then when the people of the Mesolithic era were making their tools, they used this
10:54flint.
10:55And then they left behind things like this, sort of remnants, sort of like when you're
10:59eating an apple and you throw away the core, that kind of thing.
11:02And it's not known whether this is actually used for tools, but it's definitely from that
11:06era.
11:07And it's very interesting to me, because archaeology is sort of like people battling against nature
11:13in a way, because nature is doing its best to cover things up.
11:16In fact, there was a rail cut that I found that had an entire tree growing through it,
11:21and they sort of just managed to spot the spokes of the wheel coming out.
11:24And it was really interesting.
11:25It was really awesome to produce.
11:27I really enjoyed it.
11:28So, yeah.
11:29Yeah.
11:30And really quickly, in three words, how would you describe the documentary?
11:33Ooh, old, green, and fun.
11:39Brilliant.
11:40Well, thank you so much for joining us.
11:42So coming up after the break, we have lots more.
11:44We've got waste in Ashford that has finally been cleared.
11:48And we're learning about a mushroom, very rare and legally protected.
11:52So we'll see you then.
