00:00What's going on here in Texas?
00:04I mean, are we supposed to be moving more progressive toward the possibility of having
00:09sports betting become legal?
00:10Meanwhile, it seems like they're removing some things for the equation.
00:13Tell us more.
00:14Well, yeah.
00:15So the Kickapoo tribe, we can break down kind of what's happening on the sports betting
00:19I gaming legislative side in a minute, but we'll get to the meat of the story here, which
00:23is the Kickapoo tribe sent a letter to a Senate committee saying, hey, you guys got to really
00:30reel in these lottery courier services.
00:35They argue, you know, you can have these couriers that, you know, sell a ticket and you can,
00:39they can take the ticket to the house or whatever, but instead the Texas lottery has rolled out
00:44actual, you know, online lottery systems, which this tribe kind of suggests looks a
00:51lot like slot machines, you know, from the apps, you know, they call out DraftKings acquiring
00:59one while they didn't, they didn't spell out DraftKings, but they said a major sports betting
01:02operator has acquired one of these courier services, which would be DraftKings and Jack
01:06Pocket to kind of secure a market.
01:10And they argue this is unregulated gambling and unregulated gambling expansion that it
01:15kind of infringes on their tribal rights for their bingo rooms and the offerings that they're
01:21allowed to have there.
01:23And it's not, it was not an implicit, we're going to launch our own thing or expand our
01:28own casinos, but it was kind of underlying in this letter of, Hey, if you're going to
01:33let this go unchecked, we might, you know, kind of progress and do our own thing.
01:37But perhaps whether it's a casino, like a full blown casino on their tribal land perhaps
01:43online sports betting, perhaps online gambling much like you guys have in Florida through
01:49that kind of method.
01:50So it's an interesting move and you're seeing kind of more and more, you know, we can point
01:54to California where the tribes are really kind of trying to round up the right way to
02:00do it for sports betting and protect their gaming interests.
02:04And this is what Kickapoo is doing here in Texas is saying, Hey, we've got gaming.
02:08You guys are infringing on it by having this expansion that has not been, you know,
02:12legalized explicitly.
02:14So that's where that's at, that we'll kind of readdress Texas here in the sports betting
02:21realm. It's not going to happen this year.
02:24Maybe 2027, when a new governorship and kind of party platform of the Republicans is created
02:30right now, the Republican platform is pretty anti-gaming, especially Lieutenant Governor
02:35Dan Patrick, who leads the Senate.
02:37He's said there's no traction at all.
02:40He might leave if he's somehow pointed to the Trump administration.
02:44But even so, his successor would also be anti-gaming.
02:48So very, you know, tough road here in 2025 and they only meet every other year.
02:54So in terms of gaming expansion, you know, we've got Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban very
02:59excited about it, very, you know, lobbying to get it done, whether it is sports betting
03:05or Cuban wants, you know, the tourism of a casino resort.
03:10Yeah, Texas is just a really interesting thing.
03:12And now you've got another party coming in with the tribal aspect saying, hey, let's
03:16figure something out and make this, you know, the right way versus just kind of letting
03:21things happen.
