00:00What came first, the chicken or the egg?
00:02It's a question that's puzzled humans for centuries,
00:05but it looks like science may finally have an answer.
00:08A team from the University of Geneva
00:10studied a single-celled organism called Chromosphaera purkinse,
00:14and this little guy might just solve the mystery.
00:17This organism, discovered in marine sediments near Hawaii,
00:20dates back over a billion years.
00:23Long before chickens, or any animals, really,
00:25Chromosphaera was forming multicellular structures
00:28similar to animal embryos.
00:30So, what does that mean?
00:32Basically, nature had the blueprint to make eggs before any animal,
00:36let alone chickens, existed.
00:39Eggs have been around since dinosaurs,
00:41way before chickens arrived just 10,000 years ago.
00:44So, scientifically speaking, the egg came first.
00:48What came first, the chicken or the egg?
00:50But if you're really talking about a chicken egg,
00:52that's still up for debate.
00:53So, team chicken or team egg?
