Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell assesses a win vs St Johnstone and the star playing out of position for him
Transcript
00:00I think you're worried if your goalkeeper is having to pull off saves left, right and centre and there's last-ditch defending, I didn't really feel that that was there.
00:07Wanted us to play that wee bit higher and go and try and meet St Johnstone higher up, but probably again for the last, what, six, seven, eight minutes is probably the time and you would expect them to throw kitchen sink at us.
00:20So, no, I felt we were fairly comfortable. I thought we were really comfortable at 2-0.
00:24Obviously, the nervous energy comes when it goes to deficits, only one off the back of the penalty.
00:29But we did carve out a lot of good chances in there as well.
00:32Tony Watt, Davor, Tom Sparrow makes a beautiful run and probably has a wee bit more time than expected.
00:38So, I thought it was a deserving three points for us.
00:41I thought we woke first lumber. I thought we started slow in the game.
00:45So, we had a similar situation against Dundee here.
00:48We were lost in our first home defeat of the season and I never, ever felt in the game that we started to get going.
00:54We did today. We were clinical when our opportunities came.
00:58We were still carving out opportunities throughout the 90-plus minutes, 95 minutes, as it were.
01:04So, there's loads to like, but overall, I think we're seven points better off than we were last season.
01:09So, I try to look at the bigger picture, seven points better off, being in a national semi-final, a lot of turnover of players,
01:16a lot of senior players that would be very much in my thoughts, still in the treatment room.
01:21So, I think there's a lot to like about the football club at this minute in time without getting carried away.
01:25Yeah, I've always been certain that he could play there.
01:28I wasn't necessarily thinking we would get to the stadium playing there.
01:31I think, obviously, Liam Gordon coming out.
01:33Unfortunately, we lost Shane Blaney, not to injury, but for personal reasons.
01:39And then, you know, you start to look at Paul McGinnis and Stephen O'Donnells and these guys that are injured.
01:45So, for how we want to play and how we work towards playing every single day of life,
01:49it obviously gives you a little bit of a dilemma, but it doesn't after his performance today.
01:53I thought he was excellent. I thought he was really composed on the ball and I thought he defended manfully.
01:57And he gave us a real balance to that kind of left side of the back three.
02:01So, delighted for him.
02:03And he's the type of lad that's had to be patient.
02:06But ultimately, the way he goes about his business every day, I'm not really surprised that he comes in and slots in.
02:11You know, you'll play absolutely anywhere on the pitch to get a game,
02:14which is always a brilliant example for the young players that we have in the group.
