00:00In our country, more than 45% of deaths due to cancer are attributable to modifiable risk factors,
00:10both behavioral, that is, incorrect lifestyles, and environmental.
00:14It is about 80,000 of the 180,000 deaths estimated per year for cancer, equal to 200 deaths a
00:20day for cancer caused by factors on which one could have intervened.
00:24This was mentioned on the occasion of the 26th National Congress of IOM, the Italian Association
00:28of Medical Oncology, taking place in Rome until November 10.
00:32The president of the association takes a picture of the current situation.
00:36The number of patients we can cure is increasing, but the sick people who do not heal or do not yet
00:42and who are chronicling have many assistance needs, they also have various needs,
00:50which we can not necessarily guarantee 100% as medical oncologists, but which also require
00:56other figures of the national health service, for which there is a shortage, an important shortage,
01:02and that is why we hope that it can significantly improve financing and that it can correspond to this,
01:12an organization that is also more efficient than the forces that are in the field.
01:17To primary prevention based on correct and secondary lifestyles, based on screenings,
01:22a tertiary one is also added.
01:24That is, to remind those who have already fallen ill that they can still do a lot even in terms of prevention.
01:30It is known, for example, that in people operated on for a mammary tumor or for a colon tumor,
01:35but also for other tumors, even if the evidence is less strong, the risks of a recidivism
01:39of the disease can be reduced if the patient does a regular physical activity, for example.
01:44The president of the IOM Foundation styles a precious Vade Mecum of prevention.
01:48Do not smoke, do not drink alcohol, any dose, any type of alcohol is carcinogenic.
01:54Do physical activity constantly.
01:57Do a Mediterranean diet that is based on foods that are those of the season.
02:02Seasonality is essential.
02:04Avoid increasing the obesity of our children, because most, 40% of cancers before the age of 40
02:11is due to childhood obesity.
02:13Adhering to screening programs and also contrasting adult obesity with these norms,
02:19with these behaviors.
02:21Every man can be responsible for reducing the risk of incidence of all cancers in the Western countries
02:27and therefore in Italy by 40%.
02:29Alongside the clinics and experts involved in the opening of the Congress,
02:33also the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci.
02:36I believe that the national health system must be financed,
02:40then, as I always say, in addition to being financed,
02:43the funds of the International Health Fund must also be spent well,
02:46especially for the sick and for the citizens.
02:48At a time when, with the oncology we are talking about today,
02:51there are many new products that, fortunately,
02:54manage to cure diseases that until recently were considered incurable.
02:58So we must ensure that all Italian citizens have new molecules and new therapies available,
03:05also and above all to defeat cancer.
