00:00It's Bruins Thursday here on Jones and Keefe on WEI. I was Mike Milbury this morning with Greg Hill
00:05We got Andrew Raycroft of Nessun joining us now
00:07He's brought to you by John sewer and drain cleaning the name to know when your drains don't flow razor
00:12What was that the other night? What was that?
00:15Well, let's start with like the good news is we will never have to worry about firing coaches in a Patriots parade because they have
00:22zero chance
00:24Anything for a really really long time, so let me get that out there first
00:29No one's paying attention to them on Sunday
00:32Listen, they played a good first half of the game
00:34They took stupid penalties and and their power plays not good enough and their penalty kills not good enough. So a team that's been
00:41synonymous with the top seven in the league for the last
00:4515 years in special teams both power play and penalty kill you could you could set a watch to it
00:52isn't there right now and in a league that's very special teams dependent and
00:56You get that the other night the Leafs power play had been horrible and for the fourth time this season the Bruins give up
01:02Three power play goals in a game. You can't can't win that way
01:04Yeah, is there a reason that you could pinpoint for why they've been so bad killing penalties this year?
01:10I mean, I know they're constantly trying to kill penalties, but it does seem like a ton of goals are allowed
01:16Yeah, it starts with it starts with taking too many and it starts with taking ones
01:23So the two they take in in the game against Toronto in the second period when again there it was a good it you
01:29know, it was a
01:300-0 five on five not really much happening
01:34But that's a good thing when you go into Toronto kind of game and then there's a bad handoff between
01:39Swainman and in his defense the door I've had to take a penalty that that really should never have happened
01:44So it's unforced they score a minute and a half later
01:47They take another penalty in the neutral zone unforced not a scoring chance
01:51not a scoring opportunity and the Leafs score and it's to nothing and then you're chasing the game and then you're reaching and then you're
01:57poking so
01:59Again, it's it's the way you're taking penalties
02:01It's the fact you're taking too many and listen, they lost a little bit of depth last season. I know everyone
02:09There was it was easy to criticize a guy like Derek Forbert the last couple of years on the back end and all he's big
02:14He killed a lot of penalties the first one over the boards over on the left side and I
02:18Think I continually said that he's very important to this team. I think he's continually said he's an asset
02:23He's not there now Jake the brush turned in a really good penalty killer. Dan Heinen was another really good killer
02:29So I think they might be trying to figure out their their formula on the PK
02:35Personnel wise on top of just taking too many now razor
02:39I don't want to brag but Keith and I were in the building on Sunday
02:44Watching the crack and we were at we're actually we're actually
02:46Relatively in your section the gentleman in front of us was trying to get your attention the entire game
02:50He had a big sign. He was trying to get your attention. I don't know how successful that was
02:55Okay
02:57Not very usually those guys just want to get on the big screen. I think they like try and get my attention
03:02Oh, so they just see a camera and think that's gonna get him on the jumbotron. I see
03:07Yeah, you were locked in you were locked in you weren't given all the time of day
03:10You were you were focused on the job at hand, which I give you credit for but so we were in the building
03:15Pasternak gets benched in the third period the team wins that game and then they do what they did the other night
03:22Is that carryover? Is that a reflection in any way on Montgomery and how the team?
03:27Feels about him how Pasternak and another star like Marcian feel about him. Should we connect those two?
03:34No, I don't get that sense at all. I traveled with the team
03:38This weekend I went up to try and I thought everyone's in pretty good spirit
03:42They're pretty happy that they shut shut everybody out on the weekend
03:45I think it was a pretty good store perfect storm for the benching of David. You're up to nothing
03:53You guys saw it. They were out shooting Seattle
03:5625 to 6 after two periods
04:00The game did not need any more offense. The Bruins were going to win that game in the third period
04:05so it was kind of timely to be able to sit your goal score prove a point and
04:11Garner a lot of currency for the rest of the team and accountability on the season. I don't think
04:18They had they didn't skate what they don't know. They did skate Monday. Most guys skated Monday
04:23They had an optional skate Tuesday. So by the time that game started Tuesday, I'm assuming it wasn't in most people's minds
04:29And
04:31Again, I think it just comes down to that really comes down Tuesday night to the bad special teams
04:35You know NHL coaches get fired all the time and it's certainly not always their fault while the team is struggling
04:41But it's like the one move that the GM president or whatever can kind of do to spark the team
04:47Do you think the way things are going that Montgomery could survive a losing streak?
04:53Like let's say they rip off three love
04:55They've only lost one now
04:57The way things are going right now the team's below 500 if they drop to three in a row
05:02Do you think he's going to survive that?
05:06So I
05:07Do yes, I do
05:10Yeah, and that's you know, again, we did that we did the hypothetical last week
05:14After the 8-2 drumming and it all say, you know, they could easily lose in Philly. They could lose against Seattle
05:20They could lose in it. So it's tough for me to do that
05:23It's just not like the the way I think about the game and how it works
05:26I I guess the big thing right and the reason why we're talking about is the contract, right?
05:32If there were if he had a year left on his contract next year
05:35Would we be at calling for a firing would we like that's kind of the way I'm picturing this like, okay
05:42Let's take all the business out of it
05:44Would we be saying would I would you be asking me if you're gonna fire Jim Montgomery?
05:48Two of the best seasons regular seasons
05:52In in Bruins history the last two years and and lost to the Stanley Cup finalists in the Stanley Cup
05:58Winner in the playoffs the last two years. Would you be calling for his head this early in the season?
06:03I don't think so. I mean, I might be razor, but I can't speak to everybody else
06:06Oh, but but yeah
06:07I promise but I saw something going back to last year is great as his regular seasons have been I think if he doesn't get
06:13Out of the first round last year. He loses his job
06:15Like I think it came down to that that came to take over the second, right?
06:19Of course, but yeah, you know
06:21I've got a lot of sayings of but if this had this and that would be my uncle
06:26We can't do that, right?
06:29Well, yeah, so it again. I don't see it. I just don't see it. It's still early in the season
06:35He's got some time to build this group. It's not ideal to be under 500. We've talked to you
06:41You have to sort things out. I'm not saying everything's perfect
06:43I just think that you have to give a guy who's coming in. I guess that's it
06:48You know, you could do that game, too
06:49I don't know who's a better hire if we actually wanted to go down that road
06:53So again, I just I'm really I really think this group could turn it around
06:57I think the best players have to play better. I think that Charlie coils the Fredericks
07:01they have to get scoring and helping this group and I think they can get on a run so
07:07Again, you know again if they of course if they lose eight in a row here then then you know
07:11You can continue to ask me that change and I don't I don't know who would be better
07:15I really I really don't but on the current staff. Do you see any of those guys as future?
07:22NHL head coaches like some of the assistants right now whether it's here or somewhere else
07:25I got their guy like Chris Kelly or somebody that you feel like we have that guy's gonna be a head coach
07:30Well, Joe Sacco has been a coach in the NHL. He coached a long time, you know, he had coached in Colorado
07:35So I would you know, I I haven't asked any of those guys personally if they have aspirations for that
07:40But I assume like all of us we you know
07:43We we have goals and we continue to try and get better at what we do
07:48I would assume they they would want to be head coaches or wouldn't turn it down if they was offered
07:53But I don't know. I don't know what that dynamic is if Monty's so good and they like him so much
07:58How come they haven't given him a contract extension? I
08:02Don't know. I don't know. I don't know
08:05If it could be a lot of different things, I suppose term money
08:10But but that is that that's kind of what's hanging around this and I certainly have no insight on that
08:16We talked last week about Jeremy Swain man. Well, actually both goalies we talked about last week
08:20but I'm curious now to this point of the year and
08:23I get it that they're they're trying to kill off a lot of penalties and the you know
08:28Toronto scores three power play goals the other night, but just looking at the overall numbers
08:31He's now down to 40th in the league and goals against average. How would you say the the see?
08:38I know the stats don't always tell the story
08:39So, how would you say through whatever it is 10 starts that he has had Swainman is playing. I
08:45Think he's been good. I think it's really hard to have good numbers when you're giving up three power play goals because
08:51Essentially you have to be
08:53Really perfect the rest of the way and you have to get a lot of shots to get your numbers up
08:58So three power play goals you need 30 power play shots to end up 900
09:03Which is a respectable number in this league. The same percentages are going down shooters are getting better. So
09:09When you when you put up a six spot early in the season, that's going to inflate your six goals on in a half
09:14A game last week. Yeah, that's going to really inflate the numbers
09:18so I think the
09:20Numbers aren't ideal, but you can explain that I think his game itself has been good
09:25I think he needs a little bit of help both goaltenders on
09:27That penalty kill because again if you give up if you're a goaltender giving up three power play goals in a game
09:34It's just it's just never going to make your stats look good
09:37Because again, I can go and I could take those out
09:41Because I don't I think we can all agree like it wasn't like he had a chance on those power play goals Tuesday night
09:46In Toronto, so you take those out and he made 20 of 20 saves
09:50Five on five and look pretty solid outside of those
09:53So I think the the penalty kill numbers and this goes back guys to
09:58So maybe why the goaltending numbers have been so amazing here for a long time is
10:03Because the penalty kills been so good for so long and so much better than everybody else in the league that
10:08Those it we're seeing what can happen. If you have a bad penalty kill put goaltender numbers on top of
10:15standings
10:16There's a name out there that apparently is garnering interest throughout the league on the Bruins, you know short of firing Montgomery
10:22Maybe they can make a change to the roster. I guess where I'm going with this Kevin weeks
10:25Says that a lot of teams are interested in pending UFA Trent Frederick. He's drawing attention in the marketplace
10:31That doesn't mean the Bruins are gonna trade him if he's drawing attention
10:34But is there a name on the roster where you look at it and go?
10:36Okay, if the Bruins are gonna make a switch to their roster, they're not gonna fire Montgomery
10:40They're gonna have to change things up with the team to get penalty killing or whatever
10:44They need is there a name you look at that would be a logical guy to move is Frederick that guy
10:50Well, no, I don't think so because I think Freddy is very important to this group
10:54I think they expect a lot out of him
10:56And of course again contract business side of it that stuff starts leaking out and trust me agents the the
11:05the
11:06top guys on
11:08Elliott Friedman Kevin week the insiders and in all sports
11:13The first five guys in their list of phones who they call the most are five agents
11:18That's that's that's the pipeline. That's how that works and
11:22You know the start of the season hasn't gone Freddy's way, but but I think there's a lot in there
11:26There's a lot in there and and I think the he's a big piece of getting going not just the penalty kill
11:31But but scoring a little bit more so I think all the pieces are in the room
11:35I just think that it hasn't quite been to the level that each individual
11:39Expects and and they feel like they could turn that around starting tonight against Calgary razor before we let you go
11:45You excited for the flood of American celebrities moving to Canada. Are you guys excited for that? Oh
11:50Wait till they get to Canada and see how great it is up there
11:54Yeah, the politics in Canada is fantastic right now we everyone all my friends I was in Toronto
12:01Yeah, we had a interesting conversation
12:04So I I wish all of those high earners who make a lot of money making movies
12:10Good luck with their tax bill in Canada
12:13Yeah, they can share that with the whole rest of the country. All right razor. We appreciate it. Thanks so much
12:17You got it guys, thank you very good Andrew Raycroft joins us here every Thursday on a Bruins Thursday brought to you by John sewer and
