00:00But you know what forget about the beef stuff because dream has been playing excellent basketball excellent basketball the fit with buddy hill
00:08And we're talking about fits and culture because we're talking about quarterbacks yesterday
00:12You know part of it and I think we're all learning this as a society
00:17That's it's not so much about your talent
00:20You could be a superstar
00:21But if you don't fit somewhere you don't fit and we see a lot of superstars not be able to fit in the nba together
00:29It's about fit and who's the right player at the right time not the name on the back of the jersey
00:34But who fits and who can contribute to what that team is trying to do it right now
00:38Buddy hill fits with the go to state warriors now king fans are trying to warn us all and I hear
00:44D low and kc and all the buddies down at nbc sports bay area shasky saying ah buddy
00:49Do you just wait 20 games in well i'm not i'm gonna ride the wave here with buddy hill now
00:54He joined jim rome yesterday
00:56And he discussed his fit with the go-to-state warriors
00:58fit in situation and uh something i've been done for a long time, but
01:02Also getting the recognition but also playing to a team that wants to emphasize the three balls and then compliment my movement
01:09You know and I watch these guys all my career coming in college
01:12You know, I go to the nba games when they came in town oklahoma and watch them play
01:17So it was just I studied them
01:19I always wanted to play in that type of system that they got into and like and that they applied to the game and uh
01:26You know, I always tell everybody it wasn't with steph
01:28Corey, I probably wouldn't be in draft being drafted the sixth pick because my shooting but uh, you know
01:32I'm just happy to be here and i'm just and i was glad to keep building
01:35So he talked about that watching the warriors
01:36They always felt like he could play in the system
01:38What would you react to that and then and if he put any pressure on himself to replace clay thompson?
01:42I always wanted to play in this style of play, you know, and uh
01:46All I know how to do is be buddy, you know, not trying to be clay or trying to replace him
01:51just be buddy and uh and add my
01:54Strengths to this team, which is my movement and my energy and my charisma and just being me and once you come in with
02:00The right intent and not trying to fill or replace anybody like good things will happen good things will follow
02:04And him and clay are boys was they play for the bohemian team, uh team bahamas
02:08They were down there working out together clay couldn't play because I forgot the application was late or something like that
02:14Anyway, but there are teammates down there, but buddy, that's the perfect answer. Just be buddy. Don't try to replace a legend
02:19We see whether it's football baseball
02:21Uh soccer whatever it is shaski people try to replace somebody just be you say dig a radio right just be you
02:29Just be you and that's what buddy's being right now. I didn't know he had this miss charisma
02:33Maybe sacramento drained him from all that charisma. He bounces around the league goes indiana philadelphia
02:39He feels like he's in basketball heaven right now
02:42Fit is something i'm really really really coming around. I'm like we always kind of knew what was there
02:47But the more and more that I like
02:49Study this stuff and I think about it like talent is going to override a lot of things for a lot of people
02:54But you can have all the talent in the world, but you do have to fit in the situation
02:58But I think the majority of these players don't have like for example, i'll give you an example
03:03I believe magic johnson would have been special anywhere. But boy did he fit la perfectly?
03:10Did he fit that time in that team in that place and that community and that style of play to a t?
03:17Right, and it was just perfect same thing with larry bird, right?
03:19He fit that team and that community and everything. It was just like perfect
03:23You could not script players for their communities and their style of plays any better
03:30But then I think of guys that are like lesser talents, right? Pablo sandoval
03:35It didn't work out in boston for a variety of reasons
03:37but clearly the fit didn't it just didn't fit and then when he comes back home and like
03:42You guys all we all knew like he just fits here
03:44Like he just he just does you know
03:46And and I think buddy healed is more in that pablo zone where like the fit really really matters
03:53Not that he's not a good player
03:54He's a good player
03:54But like the fit fit really really really matters for them to be their optimal version of themselves
04:00Think johnny damon with the red socks the fit was perfect the beard the hair everything about him, you know, dustin padroia
04:07I don't think dustin padroia is dustin padroia if he's playing for the milwaukee brewers, right?
04:11And i'm not trying to shortchange him. It's just my belief
04:14um
04:15And the more and more I think about this be I think like obviously buddy healed fits just absolutely perfectly for his situation
04:22and I
04:24I don't know man
04:24I think that as I look across the sports landscape and we talk about adding players to certain teams and things like that
04:31Christian mccaffrey would be good in a lot of systems boy
04:34He's the perfect fit in kyle shanahan's for this fan base this team this region. Yeah, there's no doubt fit matters
04:41More so in sports culture character
04:44You know, that's why the niners have been so good over the last five six years
04:48Because they have high character guys that just fit that locker. They fit what shanahan wants to do. They fit that culture
04:55Lawyers, they were so successful because guys came in and they got high character guys
05:00And it fit the culture and that's why they were able to welcome guys in like javel mckee and nick young
05:05Taking flyers on these guys now, they took a flyer on kaylee uber and jr
05:08And joe lincoln told us to our face. Yeah, I don't think that worked out now
05:12He didn't able by name, but he goes look man. I was I was a little ambitious because I wanted to win so damn bad
05:17This fit of buddy hill the true move and having the answer
05:21I can't get over what fit said about chris demarco or ron adams being out there with team bahamas
05:25And getting to know buddy. So when it came around the event, you know, hey, what about buddy hill mike?
05:29Don't let me say hey, what do you know about buddy hill? Yo this guy man? Uh, I think it might work
05:35It may work here and it has worked so far
05:37He's averaging 21 points per game and you see the movement you see him driving to the basket
05:42I didn't know he had that in his back. I didn't see that same player in sacramento
05:45I certainly didn't see it in indiana and we didn't see it in philadelphia because he barely played
05:50the fit has been perfect for him and I also believe that he's um
05:55I think he's matured to some degree now
05:57Obviously you gotta do it for longer than eight games or seven games or something like that
06:00um, let me throw another name at you beat like
06:03Nick saban is a pretty good coach, right?
06:06Yep, yeah nick saban, uh, obviously had great success at lsu goes to the miami dolphins
06:12He's not a miami guy. No, and he and he didn't really love the nfl at that particular point in time now
06:18Do I think he would have been successful?
06:21Probably eventually because I do think he's that great of a coach. Well, they they were like nine and seven that last year
06:25I think they have won like seven in a row in the season. They were training in the right direction, but the bama job was
06:32He better fit alabama like a glove, okay, he was perfect in that situation
06:38I think of what's going on with lincoln reilly at usc right now. Lincoln's kind of a southern guy, you know
06:43I don't think he's a glitz and glamour la guy. Pete carroll fit usc
06:48Perfectly. He understood what it was like. He's the goofy old guy. He leaned into the superstars like
06:54He just he fit perfectly and so like I don't know buddies, you know nick saban or whatever
07:00but it does like i'm you've been talking about this for weeks on end and
07:05i'm now coming all the way over to your side of the of the church if you will o'neill and
07:10Fit is maybe more important than overall talent. Yeah, it does team chemistry fit fit fit fit
07:16You think about that first warriors championship clay wasn't a superstar yet? No. Draymond wasn't a superstar yet
07:21It was steph curry and it was strength in numbers
07:24But all those guys fit livingston fit mo buckets fit barbosa fit and they're starting it like it's very early
07:31We got to see what happens on this road trip
07:33but this team is reminiscent of that where
07:36Who I don't need to give a night. You're gonna have a number two scorer
07:39I don't really care about a designated number two scorer. We know steph's the guy
07:44How does it revolve around him? They're playing great team defense. They're playing great half-court defense
07:49They're hustling they're grabbing loose balls, they're winning the 50-50 balls to deflect the things in the half court
07:54They're scrappy as hell. They're getting great shots and they're starting to take care of the basketball. That's
08:00That's a good basketball team right here
08:02So if they can keep that up over these next three games
08:04We're going to look back at mike deli these offices that all season to say damn
08:08Aren't we thankful they didn't trade for paul george? Wow, they didn't trade for larry marketing
08:12You have all this depth she curves playing 13 guys it fits and that's why
08:17That's why there was a quiet confidence within an organization
08:21Going into media day before media day. Shaski when it went out to hawaii
08:25There's this quiet confidence amongst mike deli v joe lakeham players coaches
08:31All right, bonte. I think we're going to be pretty good. We don't know how good
08:35But I think we're cooking with something here and I think we're a little bit better than last year
08:38I don't think last year you won 46 games. You're talking about miss 27
08:43The year before you only won 44. Okay, great
08:45You're coming off a championship. You struggled and whatnot. But wow, you think this team's and there was a quiet confidence with this bunch
08:52And it's come to fruition early, but we'll see tonight. We'll see friday. We'll see sunday
08:56this is more of a bigger question, but like
08:59And I want your opinion on this. I think seth would have been really good in a lot of places
09:04But I don't think he'd been this version of himself
09:07Like I always go back to the mark jackson stuff and like the empowerment and playing for don nelson for a short period of time
09:13And like I do believe that
09:15Steph curry for whatever reason
09:17Reached his maximum potential in this location and I don't think i'm not saying he wouldn't have been good
09:22That's not what i'm saying. I think he would have been good in a lot of places. He maximized his talents with the system
09:27Right. Uh-huh. The fit was perfect
09:29And so I look at the trickle down effect across the whole roster
09:32I don't know if pods works in a lot of places, but I know it works here
09:35He's a witty player. I don't know if kavon looney works in a lot of other places
09:39I know he works here draymond green's like the ultimate of this to me
09:43Like he was a tweener and you know coming out
09:45No one really knew what position he was or whatever and as a point forward playing alongside that guy steph curry
09:50It's like one of the greatest fits of all time, man
09:54Oh, we it's gonna be it's gonna be fun to die
