00:00Revolutionize the field of therapy based on stem cells for neurodegenerative diseases,
00:11developing innovative and personalized cell products that can meet the various therapeutic needs of patients.
00:18This is the objective of the 5th IERC Synergy Grant won by the University of Milan,
00:24a new international recognition for the work of the scientists of the State,
00:28which this year has been awarded to the research team of Senator Elena Cattaneo
00:32and Doctor of Pharmacology at the State University of Milan.
00:35In this scenario, the scientific research of the State border,
00:39with success obtained at the international level,
00:41was at the heart of the press conference held at the Boardroom of the Rectorate of the same university.
00:47We are particularly proud because it is one of the highest recognition
00:52for research at the European and international level.
00:56These are projects that reward in particular the cohesion
01:00and collaboration of research groups at the international level,
01:04therefore the ability to make a team and work on the same topic
01:08starting from different athenae and different research groups.
01:12A recognition of great value.
01:16We are the only ones in 2024 in Milan.
01:20Today we also take the opportunity to present the projects that are the winning results
01:25of the IERC Synergy Grant in recent years,
01:29always researchers of the State University of Milan,
01:32and to make a point about the advancement of these projects,
01:35all of them of great international importance.
01:39The Synergy Grants granted by the European Research Council
01:42are particular forms of subsidies dedicated to research projects of excellence
01:46that receive a total funding of about 10 million euros for 6 years.
01:51Since 2007, when the European Research Council was established,
01:551,000 projects of Italian universities have been funded
01:58for a value of almost 1 billion euros.
02:01And what do they consist of?
02:03They deal mainly with research groups with different skills and expertise
02:11and that synergize precisely to find innovative solutions in the research sector.
02:16So they are certainly a fundamental point for what concerns research and innovation at the European level.
02:23With the custom-made project Neuron for Cell Therapy in Parkinson's and Huntington's Disease,
02:29Elena Cattaneo's research team is thus awarded the 5th IERC Synergy Grant
02:34of the University of Milan.
02:37This is a project that we have been pursuing for two years
02:41with a competitive and prestigious European funding.
02:45Together we have set ourselves the goal of developing new strategies
02:51based on stem cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
02:57such as Parkinson's and Huntington's Disease.
03:01The current clinical experimentation strategies
03:05are designed to treat Parkinson's and Huntington's Diseases
03:11with the same cellular preparation.
03:15But we know that the disease manifests itself with different characteristics in different diseases,
03:21so we need to produce stem cell preparations
03:25suitable for the different needs of the patient.
03:29This is the goal.
03:31We will have six years to achieve this goal.
03:34It will be a lot of research, it will be a great team effort
03:38and we really have to thank Europe,
03:41which gives us the motivation, the strength and the goal
03:46to overcome the boundaries to work together for the benefit of the citizens.
