Will Rooney reports on Liverpool's win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League from Anfield.
Transcript
00:00Full time here at Anfield and Liverpool find themselves not only top of the Premier League but top of the European standings as well.
00:08A devastating second half performance saw the Reds deliver a 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen to move top of the Champions League format.
00:17As I say, the second half they were unbelievable. Liverpool were ruthless and they made it.
00:23A miserable return to Anfield for former midfielder Xabi Alonso.
00:27First half was a real tactical battle to be honest. Bayer Leverkusen probably had the better of the possession but they didn't really create too many chances.
00:37Liverpool probably shazed it in terms of goals scored and opportunities.
00:42Cody Garpo adds one late on, Mo Salah adds one at the near post, Curtis Jones has an effort saved by the keeper.
00:50Second half, Liverpool stepped up the intensity, took more risks according to Arnaud Slott.
00:56The crowd started to get on top and they went man for man a little bit more and they got the rewards.
01:03In 58 minutes Mo Salah spurned a big chance after he was slipped in by Ryan Gravenberg but three minutes later,
01:11Lewis Diaz, the first of his first Liverpool hat-trick, fantastic ball through by Curtis Jones.
01:18A really perfectly weighted through ball into the run of Lewis Diaz who was operating as a makeshift striker tonight.
01:25Dama Nunes on the bench but his finish was one that any number 9 in the world would have been proud of
01:31because he just chipped on Russian Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Tolkan scoring.
01:37Like Saturday in the 2-1 win over Brighton, Liverpool scored the second goal within three minutes.
01:44It was Cody Garpo scoring his fourth goal in three games.
01:49A real sweep and move from Liverpool that was rounded off by Garpo's header.
01:55Initially he was flagged offside but quickly it became apparent that he was onside when you looked at the replays
02:02and VAR overturned that decision. Liverpool were on top for the most part from there
02:07and they got the rewards when Diaz netted his second.
02:10Another cross from Salah, Diaz bullied the Leverkusen defender,
02:15took it down in the box and neatly finished into the far corner.
02:19To be fair, the German champions did threaten to get a consolation but Joachim Kovic who had nothing to do
02:26made a fantastic double save and another one to his left.
02:29In stoppage time, Diaz rounded off his hat-trick.
02:32Darwin Nunes, his substitute, made a real impact on the break.
02:36His shot was blocked but the rebound fell for Diaz and he finished.
02:40Liverpool have now won all four Champions League games.
02:44One step closer to qualifying for the knockout stage.
02:50They go to Real Madrid next to this competition.
02:53First they've got Aston Villa on Saturday.
02:56So much has been made about Liverpool's fixture list from the last international break until this one.
03:02Some were saying they haven't really had a test.
03:05They've come through a lot of tests already.
03:08Bayer Leverkusen, the German champions, Leipziger flying, Chelsea, Arsenal,
03:14Brighton twice and Aston Villa.
03:16If they get a win there then they've only dropped points in one game.
03:19That would be away at Arsenal who have finished runners-up in the Premier League for the past two seasons.
03:25If Liverpool get a result against Aston Villa then you would be thinking they can really go on
03:30and challenge for four major trophies this season.
03:33But a real night to remember.
03:36Not one for Xabi Alonso's Anfield returner who finished Liverpool 4-0, Leverkusen 0.
