00:00The 2000 U.S. presidential elections boiled down to the state of Florida, where the counting
00:05of votes was marred by the filled-out ballots themselves, dimpled chads, hanging chads and
00:10butterfly bullets.
00:11It took 34 days of back-and-forth legal wrangling at the state and federal courts until the
00:16Republican-leaning Supreme Court stepped in and declared George Bush the winner with a
00:22lead of 537 votes.
00:24A similar tooth-and-nail legal battle scenario in tomorrow's U.S. elections could ensue if
00:30the vote counting extends for days as Trump's team has cast doubt on the poll results.
00:35As VOA's Verónica Balderas Iglesias explains.
00:38Earlier this year, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told several media outlets
00:46that if the results of the November 5th presidential election are, quote, honest, fair and free,
00:53he would accept them.
00:56Election officials are confident the voting process will be fair, secure and transparent.
01:02But the former president has increasingly voiced concern about his opponents possibly
01:07committing fraud.
01:08If we can keep that cheating down, because there are a bunch of cheats, if we can keep
01:13that cheating down, we're going to have a tremendous victory.
01:16During an interview that aired last month on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, Vice
01:23President Kamala Harris told NBC News anchor Hallie Jackson that her team will be ready
01:29to go if Trump loses and attempts to subvert the election.
01:33We will deal with election night and the days after as they come, and we have the resources
01:38and the expertise and the focus on that as well.
01:43The Republican National Committee has in place a so-called election integrity program in
01:49battleground states.
01:51Its lawyers have filed more than a hundred lawsuits over perceived voting rules irregularities,
01:58but many have been shut down in court.
02:02Democrats have launched their own legal efforts, including suing the state of Georgia's state
02:09election results.
02:11In tight presidential races such as this year's, legal battles are expected.
02:17Most of them will be fought in swing states, analysts predict.
02:22At the polling place, we often see contests over whether or not ballots are being handled
02:32properly.
02:33In the post-election day period, there are disputes about whether or not individual voters
02:37are actually eligible and whether their provisional ballots should be cast and counted.
02:44Anyone who claims fraud, however, must present proof, legal experts warn.
02:50Lawyers be careful what you allege, make sure that you can prove it, otherwise they may
02:54be subject to discipline as we've seen growing out of the 2020 challenges.
02:59Trump's former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, for instance, was disbarred for spreading baseless
03:05claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
03:10The legal battles could delay the outcome of the presidential election, but if on Tuesday
03:15night the results are clearly in favor of one presidential nominee over another by some
03:21noteworthy margin, analysts say it will be much harder for the opposing party to contest
03:29those results.
