00:00We have a special guest with us today, a talented musical artist and the director of a legendary musical that won an award at the 14th Gawad Buhay Awards.
00:11They are the people behind the musical Sanducenang Sapatos, a story about the importance of love and understanding to our loved ones, especially those who have special needs.
00:25Let's not waste any more time, let's meet Winses Gemiana, who plays the role of Susie, and Director Jonathan Tadiwan.
00:35Hello, Director. Good morning. Welcome to RISING IN THE PHILIPPINES.
00:39Thank you for being with us this morning. Tell us more about Sanducenang Sapatos, the musical. How was it conceptualized? What was the inspiration behind this musical?
00:50Sanducenang Sapatos was originally a short story book written by Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, adapted by Dr. Layeta Bukoy for Entablado by Noel Cabangon and Jed Balsamo.
01:05The concept of this musical started when we were looking for a theater for young audiences.
01:15We thought, why don't we make a short story and adapt it to Entablado for young audiences?
01:25That's when the concept of Sanducenang Sapatos started.
01:28Actually, this was first made in 2013. I was the original father.
01:34Then, last year, in 2023, we thought, this is the 10th year, so why don't we do it again?
01:43But this time, I was the one who directed Sanducenang Sapatos.
01:48Okay, Winses, tell us about your character in Sanducenang Sapatos. Who is Susie?
01:56Susie is a girl with a dream. She is a disabled child, born without feet, who dreams of becoming a ballerina to fulfill her father's dream of having a ballerina for a daughter.
02:17What is your biggest challenge in playing Susie?
02:23Actually, I have three challenges.
02:26The first one is the schedule.
02:28Because, of course, in rehearsals and in school, I am still a student.
02:36So, given that I am already 14 years old in grade 9, the schoolwork and responsibilities have increased.
02:43So, that is one of the challenges.
02:46But she was able to jive. What are the other two challenges?
02:48The other two challenges are the singing.
02:52Because, since Susie has no feet, most of the time, she is sitting down.
02:59So, it is difficult for her to sing while sitting down.
03:02All the while, right? From the beginning to the end. How long does this play last?
03:06The play runs for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
03:10It is a musical song, so it means that it is sung continuously without a break or intermission.
03:17Yes, there is a musical called that.
03:19It's a sung-through musical.
03:21A sung-through musical. I learned that from Mr. Ryder Kamania.
03:25What are your other challenges?
03:29My last challenge is embodying a character who is disabled.
03:36Because it is a very new role for me.
03:38I am used to roles with feet.
03:43In this play, Susie has no feet, so I can't grasp the feeling.
03:50So, that is one of my challenges.
03:54It's inspiring for Audrey to watch it.
03:56That's why you don't think of anything else.
03:58But this is for Direk.
04:00In the production, how did you choose the cast, the music you will use, overall?
04:08For the artistic team, the music, the sound, the design of the stage,
04:14I personally chose all of them so that they will be our team.
04:20When it comes to the actors, even Winces, they all went through the audition process.
04:26Even the shoes, they all went through the audition process.
04:32There are only two characters that I chose to be the pre-cast.
04:36The mother, Tex Ordonez de Leon, and the father, Floyd Tenia, last year.
04:40So now, we have new members, new shoes, and a new father this year.
04:48So, all of them went through the audition process.
04:52After the initial audition, there was a final audition.
04:57How many auditions did you go through?
04:59I think they went through 8 or 9 auditions.
05:03So, I only chose two for the role of Susie.
05:05The first one was for Felicity, and the second one was for Winces.
05:13Because the role of Susie is so challenging,
05:17because it's a song through musical,
05:19you can't do it alone.
05:21It has to be repeated.
05:23How many times does it have to be repeated?
05:26On Fridays, we have one show.
05:28On Saturdays, we have two shows.
05:30And on Sundays, we have one show.
05:32But because it's a rerun,
05:34there are a lot of people who want to watch it.
05:36So now, it's almost two shows a day.
05:38Ah, it's increasing.
05:40At least, you still have a lot of support in the Filipino theater.
05:42Yes, that's true.
05:44Do you have a favorite scene?
05:46I'll go with Winces.
05:48Let's continue with the production.
05:50It's one that you can't forget.
05:52You want to be that.
05:54The scene of the writing.
05:56Okay.
05:58In this scene,
06:00Susie already expressed
06:02what she felt inside.
06:04Because she doesn't have a foot.
06:06So frustration and anger
06:08came out here.
06:10And since she doesn't have a foot,
06:12it's also one of the challenging scenes.
06:14And I like challenging.
06:16I like to express
06:18what I feel
06:20and what I feel
06:23in this scene.
06:25Because
06:27this is the most
06:29emotional for Susie.
06:31And
06:33the anger came out.
06:35And everything.
06:37That's why.
06:39It's hard to portray.
06:41Musical, shoes, title,
06:43and the main character doesn't have a foot.
06:45Why Sanducena?
06:47Because in Susie's dream,
06:49she has
06:51a desire
06:53to have a foot.
06:55She's crossing the dream.
06:57So in the dream,
06:59spoiler, sorry.
07:01In the dream, she's playing with the shoes.
07:03The creations of her father.
07:05In the dream.
07:07Because she feels that
07:09love is not enough.
07:11But at the end of the story,
07:13we'll know what the answer is.
07:15Because originally,
07:17in Doc Luis' storybook,
07:20it's the perspective of the sister.
07:22She's telling what her brother feels.
07:24She sees
07:26her brother.
07:28But this time, in Ms. Layeta Bukoy's version,
07:30she took
07:32Susie's perspective.
07:34What's really happening to her.
07:36What's Susie's experience.
07:38And what's the experience
07:40of people with disabilities.
07:42How can we understand them?
07:44How can we help them?
07:46Sometimes, material things
07:48are needed.
07:50Sometimes, understanding and loving is enough.
07:52Support.
07:54That's what people need.
07:56So what you're saying is,
07:58it's highly emotional.
08:00No, it's funny.
08:02It's funny.
08:04Yes, it's highly emotional.
08:06But we also need to know
08:08after the story of the sister,
08:10what did we learn?
08:12How can we help
08:14people with disabilities?
08:17For people like Susie,
08:19what do they need
08:21to know and feel
08:23that the love we're giving them
08:25is enough?
08:27I hope many people watch
08:29to see this kind of situation
08:31of our fellow Filipinos
08:33that we should know how to support them.
08:35Not sensationalizing them,
08:37but treat them as human beings.
