00:00We knew that this movie was going to be something different.
00:04Uniquely brutal.
00:06It felt like coming home.
00:08We share a certain history.
00:10Herstory in this case.
00:12People are dying to find out.
00:21I hear you're a horror fan.
00:22Hayden, if I could start with you.
00:24I love Kirby so much.
00:27Scream 4 was the first Scream movie I got old enough to see in theaters.
00:31And I immediately connected with her and never believed she was dead.
00:35So what has it been like for you to kind of see fans campaigning and
00:40hoping for your survival and see the Kirby hive rise?
00:44Amazing.
00:45Amazing.
00:46So inspirational.
00:49I needed it so badly.
00:52And they came to my rescue, honestly.
00:56And for them, I went knocking.
01:00And I was like, please, bring me back.
01:04Because there's more to be done.
01:07There's more to be done.
01:08It was such a joy.
01:09I was cheering in my movie theater when we saw you pop up for the first time.
01:15It's a great entrance for any character.
01:18But in the case of a returning Scream 4 into Scream 6,
01:23you know it's super satisfying for the fans.
01:26It was so much fun.
01:27I know that the fans are going to be very pleased.
01:30I saw all of that online.
01:31Twitter exploded.
01:33And I do not believe that the fans will be disappointed.
01:36It was really fun.
01:37It really was like a meeting of the minds.
01:41Thank you to our brilliant writers.
01:43And Hayden brought it.
01:45And I think I brought it.
01:46And the rest is history.
01:49Herstory, in this case.
01:50It's been said.
01:52It felt like coming home.
01:54Honestly, it felt like coming home.
01:58I found myself in Kirby in Scream 4.
02:01And we are very similar, very alike.
02:05And when she came back, I wanted to bring that back and make sure that the same Kirby survived.
02:13And is that same lion, lioness that she has always been.
02:18Man.
02:20This isn't like any other Ghostface.
02:24It's for you.
02:26I didn't realize until it was the Gale's big scene that Gale had not had a Ghostface call scene.
02:32I don't know why that didn't occur to me.
02:34Can you speak to making that happen with Courtney
02:36and having this exciting huge moment for the franchise?
02:40Yeah.
02:40I mean, it's just something that we had always wanted to see.
02:43Jamie and Guy had always wanted to see.
02:45Fans have always wanted to see.
02:47Courtney wanted to do it.
02:48Courtney was so excited about it.
02:50Shooting that whole sequence was so much fun.
02:52And Roger Jackson called in and he was on the phone with her,
02:55which was the first time they really had Gale and Ghostface.
02:58It was just exciting.
03:00Courtney had so much fun on this one and talking to him and that whole chase.
03:06The stunt rehearsals were so much fun.
03:08Like watching Courtney get into it.
03:10Get into it.
03:11That was awesome.
03:12It was really awesome.
03:14And also Courtney's stunt double.
03:16Incredible.
03:17And looked exactly like her.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Crazy.
03:20This is long overdue.
03:22I was just wondering if there were any legacy characters that are on your bucket list
03:27that you would like to see pop up in a future installment.
03:30I was hoping Heather Matarazzo was going to be in this movie again.
03:33I was too.
03:34We love her.
03:35She, I mean, excuse to see mom on set.
03:39I hope she shows up.
03:40Heather Matarazzo.
03:41That's, you know what, solidified.
03:44That's the answer.
03:45Bring her back.
03:46Get her kicking Ghostface's ass.
03:48Put her in a full fist fight with Ghostface in the next one.
03:52Roundhouse kicks and all.
03:54Please.
03:54Yep.
03:55She would kill.
03:55Yeah, that was my, I hoped, I wanted her to be the cold open this time.
03:58That was like my theory in my brain.
04:00That would have been sick.
04:01I mean, we brought Billy back as a hallucination.
04:04So anything's possible.
04:06I mean, there's a, there's a, there's a, an Easter egg in this one that to our knowledge,
04:11well, maybe nobody's said anything to us yet,
04:12but there is an Easter egg of a character we would like to bring back.
04:15You guys, you got me with that last time with the curvy Easter egg,
04:18and I had to go back and find it.
04:19I love it.
04:20You want me.
04:22So let's finish this.
04:23You know, I felt like the violence and the kills in this movie were especially
04:28emotional and character driven.
04:30Did that feel, did you feel that shift in this project?
04:34Yes.
04:35Yes, we did.
04:36Um, while we were shooting the movie,
04:40we would all look at each other and like, after they'd yell cut,
04:45I'm talking like, I remember specifically a moment when we were shooting the ladder sequence,
04:50and it was Jasmine, Josh, Devin and I.
04:55And we were, every time that they will, that they would yell cut,
05:00we'd be like, you know how when you cry with like a lot of emotion with like,
05:04with your whole body, you get like shivers and you get like,
05:07like sighing and stuff like that.
05:09And we'd all be like that after each take.
05:12And we knew like from that moment,
05:15we knew that this movie was going to be something different on another level.
05:19Well, it was, it was nice to, um,
05:22have a movie under my belt to experience what it's like to shoot with, uh,
05:27a ghost face, but there's something, um,
05:30I think uniquely brutal about, uh, Scream 6's ghost face,
05:35because every time I felt myself like run a little faster,
05:39like I, I was like, I just kind of,
05:42which is hilarious because the stunt technicians that operate the ghost face costume
05:47and do a lot of the stunts are all nice guys every time.
05:51Yeah, they're not scary at all.
05:53But the second they don that and start doing the like ghost face, like
05:57Something happens.
05:58Mannerisms, it becomes like terrifying in a weird way.
06:01The rules are very clear.
06:04Don't go to the other room and make out.
06:06Don't get in the car, right?
06:07I mean, each film reminds you exactly this stuff so that you can survive it.
06:13We do not disappoint in Scream 6,
06:15but I'm literally telling you like Scream itself where it feeds back on itself.
06:19That's all I had to do was to listen to what Scream movies were telling me
06:25to do in Scream 6.
06:27So the mystery has been wonderful.
06:29People are dying to find out.
06:31But so, so is Detective Bailey, who's out there trying to track down this killer.
06:35There was a certain tone to Scream and this movies, these movies are funny.
06:40But I think the fact that they grounded, like Jamie and Guy are brilliant writers,
06:45grounded it in family and in like the family dynamic.
06:49And it just gives it a lot more gravity.
06:52I feel like it just feels very intense.
06:57In a way.
06:57Yeah, I thought that really paid off from an audience perspective.
07:02I'm glad to hear that because we definitely,
07:04it does feel like they took this movie and stretched it out in both directions.
07:10In like the more serious direction and like the more heart-wrenching direction.
07:15And also in like the more brutal, funnier, bigger, louder direction.
07:22And I think it's such a delicate balance.
07:25But Matt and Tyler did a beautiful job.
07:27It followed me here and it's going to keep coming for us.
07:31What I really love about these last two movies is how much the story is really about family
07:36and about your relationship with your sister.
07:40Can you speak about your continued collaboration with Jenna Ortega
07:43and kind of fleshing out these two women?
07:47I mean, it's so funny because
07:50from the moment we met, it just felt so easy and it felt so natural.
07:55And we met on Zoom for the first time and it was just there.
08:02And I think that's why Matt and Tyler were like,
08:05these are the girls because it just felt like we had known each other for forever.
08:10And I am a very protective older sister.
08:13I have three younger sisters myself in real life.
08:16So the idea of this older sister doing anything and going above and beyond
08:21to protect her younger sister was something that felt very natural to me.
08:26And I love that you get to spend so much time with them in this next movie
08:31and you get to see more colors to their relationship.
08:33Because in the fifth one, it's pretty much like the younger sister's getting attacked
08:39and the older sister is trying to protect her and like that's it.
08:43And in this one, you get to see the frustration that comes with like
08:48spending so much time together.
08:49That's more, that's so common of a sibling relationship when you're living together.
08:55And so you get to see friction and you get to see laughter and you get to see
09:01now the younger sister being protective of the older one.
09:04And so I think it's just a beautiful thing to get to play out
09:09with someone that I love as much as Jenna.
09:11I'm ready.
09:12I'm ready.
09:13Come on, mother!
09:14I really loved how throughout the movie, you all referenced so many fan theories
09:18either like with the passing line or by making it like an actual part of the plot.
09:23Can you speak to why this was important besides like giving us more like red herrings possibly?
09:29Yeah, I think that one of the things that really excited us about this movie is
09:33and it was and it was very much on the page and I think but I think we're still sort of
09:37surprised at how well the meta conversation is actually baked into the plot of this.
09:44That, you know, there aren't a lot of kind of side side quest conversations where
09:49they're just referencing things that it feels like the legacy of these movies,
09:53the fan theories, all of that is like very much plot specific, right?
09:57It has a reason to exist in the movie outside of just a fun way for the movie to wink and nod.
10:04A fun way for the movie to wink and nod at the audience.
10:08And that to us is one of the really fun kind of
10:12twists on the genre that we're playing with in this movie.
10:16There were so many moments where like I thought I caught something and then you guys got me,
10:20you know, it really keeps the audience on their toes in such a fun way.
10:24Look, I would say too, I think one of the things that we love about this fandom is that there's
10:27a standard that we that we have to hold ourselves to because of how detail oriented
10:33and smart the viewership is like that to us.
10:37That's an amazing thing to have to achieve at a certain level because
10:41you're going to hold us accountable in a really in a really honest way.
10:44And that's that's really fun to create under that.
10:46It's so funny this with the release.
10:48I talked to you in the last,
10:50Duncan, for the last movie about yellow jackets and being so excited for it.
10:54And once again, these two things are coming back at the same time.
10:57Great timing for me.
10:58That's right.
10:59Yeah, is there a connection at all?
11:02Is it just all coincidence?
11:04Like, what do you think that what is the experience on your end,
11:06the fact that they keep dropping together?
11:08It's bizarre.
11:09I think it's well, I don't know, because they're both paramount.
11:12So maybe someone up there has my back.
11:14But I think that it's God.
11:16I think that it's really just great timing.
11:21But I will say it is odd that the yellow time, the yellow times,
11:25the what the heck?
11:27The yellow jackets Showtime jacket looks like Chad's jacket.
11:31Yeah, I noticed that is weird.
11:33Kept tagging me in photos and I was like, yeah, she looks great.
11:36Leave me alone.
11:38I'm not bitter.
11:39A lot of synergy.
11:40Yeah.
11:41Interesting.
11:42That's the best show.
11:43I love it so much.
11:44And I love the best.
11:45You and me both, man.
11:46But thank you so much.
11:48Congratulations, you guys.
