00:00Let someone tell me why this has never appeared in any of the presentations that META has
00:15been able to do.
00:16How to put a phone camera in the Quest Pro headset, the most convincing virtual reality
00:21of the last 5 years.
00:23But I have some interesting points of view on all this Metaverse stuff that I kept
00:26for me for a little while.
00:28But I think it's finally time to share them.
00:30So fasten your seatbelt, let's go.
00:32Meta's shares are down by more than 60% this year.
00:36Facebook's growth has stagnated and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has doubled his commitment
00:41in the entire Metaverse project, in which he has continued to invest tons and tons
00:46of money.
00:47But what is going on?
00:48Let's go back and start with definitions.
00:51RV means virtual reality.
00:53It consists of putting on a headset and being immersed in a new virtual world.
00:58RA means augmented reality.
01:00It consists of superimposing virtual objects in the real world.
01:04I'm going to use it in this video.
01:06However, these two things are both particularly difficult to show.
01:11You have to try them and use them to really understand and appreciate them.
01:16So I know that there has been a lot of curiosity about virtual reality lately,
01:21and it can be difficult to say if it's just another technological trend, like 3D TVs,
01:27or if it's really the future that awaits us all like in Ready Player One.
01:31Or maybe like in Wall-E, hard to say.
01:33Either way, there is mainly a very visible mega-company that clearly
01:38bets everything on the fact that it is definitely part of our future.
01:41And it's Meta, formerly known under the name of Facebook, and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
01:46This guy.
01:47This guy right here.
01:48And he explained to me several times that he really believed in this Metaverse concept.
01:52And he showed me the Quest Pro just before all this was officially announced.
01:57So I had to form an opinion on this before the more embarrassing presentation version
02:01that we all saw.
02:02The Metaverse may already have a pretty terrible reputation, but let's try to take a little
02:07step back, to look at it objectively as a simple new technology, okay?
02:16So virtual reality is one of the things that you have to try to understand and appreciate.
02:21But also, the difference in interest between people regarding the Metaverse is really
02:25amusing.
02:26Some do not care at all and have never tried virtual reality, others, on the other hand,
02:31are really adept at it, like the companies that hire Metaverse directors and
02:35who talk about the Metaverse everywhere and have like a strange obsession.
02:39It may be difficult to give a single answer to this question, but I think it's
02:43quite simple.
02:44The Internet as we know it today is mainly controlled by two elements.
02:49Advertising and devices.
02:51And so, if you control advertising, you connect people to the things they buy.
02:56This is mainly what Google does.
02:58Google's job is to find out everything it can on people, then show them
03:02ads in Google search results and on the Internet with Google AdWords.
03:07Almost all companies in the world that advertise online pay Google to do it
03:11for them.
03:12So even if we are talking about Pixel, Google Chrome and Android on this channel, Google
03:16is basically an advertising company.
03:18And then, if you control the devices that people use, you have considerable control
03:23over what people see.
03:25Facebook wanted to create a popular device, but it fell into the water.
03:28Believe me, they tried.
03:29But now, in 2022, as popular as Facebook has become, they have clearly saturated
03:34the market.
03:35They have reached their peak.
03:36And they have started their inevitable and slow decline.
03:39And that's how they made billions of dollars.
03:42But, with the iPhone that adds this button to authorize app follow-up requests,
03:46Google has withdrawn a share of several billion dollars from Facebook's advertising activity.
03:50This didn't really bother Google, because people still go to google.com and type
03:55what they are looking for.
03:56Google still knows a lot about people.
03:58So the result is that in the end, Facebook has to accept defeat.
04:02You know, they dominated the early days of the Internet and it was great.
04:07But now their slow decline has begun and they are moving on to the next big step.
04:11And if you look at all the technologies that could perhaps constitute the next
04:15big novelty, virtual reality and augmented reality are coming out of the water.
04:20And so if Facebook, Meta, manages to control as much as possible the future of virtual reality,
04:26software, equipment, advertising, and all the things that people see,
04:31then they will really regain control.
04:33And they will earn the money they are looking for.
04:36So they gave themselves a new image with Meta and invested billions and billions
04:41of dollars in this very specific goal.
04:46Ok, so that could be a rather interesting point of view, but the MetaQuest Pro headset
04:52costs $ 1,500 and I will explain the thought behind it in a second, but it is actually
04:58pretty good.
04:59It's really a very good headset, technologically speaking.
05:02It is much more comfortable than many others I have tried.
05:05They have therefore distributed the components between the screens and the lenses at the front,
05:09the speakers and the buttons in the middle and the battery at the back.
05:12It is lighter than it looks, but I think it's more a question of balance and weight.
05:17You can see that we have the impression that the balance point is right in the middle,
05:21which is better.
05:22But when you put it on, it looks like this.
05:24Here.
05:25Boom.
05:26And without the blockers on the side, there is a small space.
05:30And you have peripheral vision light coming from the sides and not from above.
05:34Inside, there is a more personalized Snapdragon XR2 processor, 256GB of storage, 12GB of
05:41RAM, then a set of screens and lenses, then less.
05:45And then the screens inside offer you 1920 x 1800 per eye and up to 90 FPS.
05:51And it has a suitable color real camera with the 10 sensors and cameras
05:55available outside.
05:56It's not the best real camera I've ever seen, but it works and it gives you the
06:01impression of being in a real environment.
06:03In addition, there are these new Touch Pro controllers that have their cameras and sensors.
06:07And they all charge on a welcome station via plugs, which you will often do
06:11because unfortunately, the helmet has only an autonomy of an hour and a half when it is unplugged.
06:15But there is also a series of sensors inside in front of your eyes and in front of your
06:20face for face tracking.
06:22Okay.
06:23So here I'm looking at an alien face, but what's interesting is that the alien face
06:28reproduces in real time the movements of my face that are observed by the helmet.
06:32And so it reproduces every expression I want to have.
06:35It really reproduces every little movement of the face, or even the movements of the eyes.
06:42There are also the little muscles of your face that move when you speak and that you
06:47have microexpressions.
06:49So if I was in a virtual world and I was trying to convey emotions to another
06:53person.
06:54Then he could really see all my facial expressions.
06:58It's pretty cool.
07:02Virtual reality and augmented reality work pretty well with this helmet, but in the
07:07end, it's still a pretty bulky helmet.
07:10And it doesn't bend.
07:11So if you want to travel with it, you will need a bag.
07:14This version may not be suitable for your needs.
07:17Zuckerberg keeps telling me, you know, people buy new equipment all the time
07:22for $ 2,000 like an office computer, and this could perhaps replace it one day.
07:28But it may not be enough for you.
07:30But in theory, in a few years, there will be a new version that will be much smaller
07:34and closer to an ordinary pair of glasses.
07:37And then in even longer time, there may be another even smaller version, as light
07:42as the Google Glasses of the time.
07:44And then it will be an incredible technology that will be really portable.
07:48And so, in theory, if you invest enough money and talent in something, this thing
07:54can become really incredible.
07:56Which brings me to my next point.
07:58Here is the real question we ask ourselves.
08:04Every time I see a new virtual reality helmet, whether it's the Pico Pro helmet or the
08:08MetaQuest Pro or other, the question is always the same.
08:12Does virtual reality really represent the future?
08:15Technology is really cool and it works and everything, but are we really going to spend
08:18a significant amount of time in virtual reality at some point?
08:21And the answer depends on the person you are asking the question to.
08:25I think I've noticed that the younger the person you're talking to, the more likely
08:29they are to give virtual reality a chance or try it.
08:32But if you ask Meta, if you ask any Meta leader, the answer is yes, absolutely,
08:38100%.
08:39This is the future in which we are going to live by using virtual reality all the time.
08:44The metaverse is the future.
08:45Now, of course they have to believe it.
08:47Because that's the goal the whole company is really aiming at.
08:51But there is also the fact that by looking at the presentation during the MetaConnect keynote,
08:56as deplorable and clumsy as it is, the more you look at it, the more it crystallizes,
09:01according to me, all their future plans.
09:02So, step 1, think about everything people usually do when they are on the internet.
09:07Step 2, do these things in virtual reality.
09:11Then invest tons of money in it.
09:13And then, that's kind of the whole plan.
09:15If you have the time and you look closely at this presentation, they take into account
09:20several times certain things that people do in real life, in their everyday life,
09:24and then they want to integrate these things into virtual reality.
09:27Would you like to do that?
09:28Here is an RV version.
09:29Do you do this other thing?
09:31Here is an RV version.
09:32Again and again.
09:33And ideally, for them, convincing people to use the virtual reality version will simply
09:39become a question of succeeding in making this version really, really good.
09:43And let's hope this version is better than the real version.
09:46And that's where I give my point of view, namely that some of these virtual reality
09:51applications are actually scary, and are starting to be better than the real version.
09:55And for Meta, if they manage to make enough of these things real, then they will really
10:00make this metaverse work.
10:02Gretchen, don't try to make the metaverse work.
10:05It will never happen.
10:06Okay, some things are easier.
10:08Like games.
10:09We already have good games in virtual reality.
10:11But we have to work to have more, more variety, better fidelity and also
10:16more immersion.
10:17Investing money in this ecosystem will encourage developers to quickly improve
10:21games and create better ones, which is great.
10:24But life is not limited to games.
10:26What do people do in their day in 2022?
10:28Zoom calls.
10:29Okay, perfect.
10:30Yes, they are doing Zoom calls, but better.
10:32They have created a virtual meeting room where you can have video conferences
10:36in virtual reality with other people.
10:38But if your friends or colleagues don't have an RV helmet, that's not a problem.
10:42They will appear in the form of video streams floating in the metaverse.
10:46And with a group of people in a meeting, you can talk to the people around you, organize
10:50small group meeting rooms, good immersive presentations, etc.
10:55Now, as you can see, they all use these avatars.
10:59And I think they're pretty bad.
11:01They're pretty weird.
11:02You can customize them with a lot of different things.
11:05Different hair and piercings, different features and outfits, etc.
11:09Which is nice, but you end up feeling like a metaverse meeting is just
11:13a group of characters from the Nintendo Wii.
11:16But it's really temporary, because we also saw that Meta announced this
11:20avatar demo live, which seemed to me to be an absolutely crazy idea.
11:25You can actually use your phone to scan yourself, then the helmet places
11:30a photorealistic version of you in the virtual environment, with this follow-up
11:34of the face and the look, and everything we've talked about before.
11:39It's really on a higher level.
11:41So you can imagine now, instead of a simple Zoom call with colleagues,
11:45a very good meeting with a group of people from all over the world,
11:48gathered in one room with all the advantages of visual contact and
11:51the audio setting and the possibility of leaning towards the person next to you
11:56and telling them something by whispering.
11:58All these things you can't do during a Zoom call.
12:01So you'd have to replace these strange avatars with hyper-realistic avatars
12:05and it could work.
12:06But these are just meetings.
12:08It doesn't take that long.
12:09What do people do elsewhere?
12:10Maybe they're just working from a distance.
12:12Of course.
12:13OK.
12:13Then they'll build a metaverse of virtual offices where people can work.
12:18So, if they work in different countries of the world,
12:21they can collaborate in the same space.
12:23But even the first thing I showed here,
12:25that is, the simple fact of working on your computer,
12:27what you can do for hours.
12:29And the Quest Pro takes over the Mac,
12:31which allows me to project the screen of my Mac
12:33on these multiple and huge virtual screens.
12:36So you can bring a huge configuration to three monitors wherever you go.
12:40You can bring this headset with you and do a lot more with a high resolution
12:44that can still be improved over time and more money.
12:47They invested money in Microsoft to integrate Office 365, Word and Excel
12:52and everything else in the workrooms natively.
12:54They invested money in Accenture to give them thousands and thousands of virtual reality headsets
13:00so that these people can use the metaverse to work virtually.
13:05Basically, Meta can and will invest a ton of money in this project
13:09because it's the only thing left for it to do for now.
13:12If you want to make a lot of money as a startup right now,
13:15just create a virtual reality technology startup one way or another.
13:20And show you enough levels to be acquired by Meta.
13:23It is not surprising that the Metaverse managers are popular.
13:27It has become a way of giving the impression that you could be acquired by Meta.
13:31But that brings us to the last thing.
13:37Actually, to tell the truth, I only have one problem with all this.
13:41My problem is that only one company controls all the foundation of this second-generation Internet,
13:47if you want to call it that, of this metaverse, if we take the exact term.
13:53And that's a very bad idea.
13:54So we come back to the fact that Meta wants to have as much control as possible on the future of the metaverse.
14:00Facebook has been built on foundations already there.
14:02They want to build the next foundation, then be responsible for everything that will develop later.
14:08Workshops, games, experiences, everything.
14:11They are therefore investing as much money as possible to be able to go as far as possible.
14:17Other companies are developing and manufacturing really cool virtual reality products, don't get me wrong.
14:23There is the Pico headset that I showed you.
14:25There are Google stuff, other stuff.
14:28I think we are all waiting for Apple to finally unveil its RV headset in about a year.
14:33Which, I think, will make Meta a little nervous because Apple will certainly ensure that it is the best for iPhone users.
14:40But, Meta has already been able to establish so many connections and develop so many technologies.
14:45And they were able to buy so many companies and virtual reality studios that ...
14:52It sucks.
14:52But that's how it is.
14:53And if there was a company that could allow this technology to be launched and become popular, then it's beautiful and good Meta.
15:02But the downside to that, in particular regarding this company,
15:05is perhaps to have so much control over people and the future of the Internet.
15:09And maybe do crazy things like use eye tracking to make sure you see some ads.
15:15And I find it too dangerous to be able to support this concept 100%.
15:19I've already said it, but when companies are really in competition, that's actually where we win.
15:24When there is an incitement to improve because there is competition, that's where we get the best things.
15:31But guys?
15:32Mark's Metaverse money?
15:35Could make all this Meta concept much more accessible or maybe not.
15:44See you soon.
15:45Peace.
