00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here, and the next generation of gaming consoles is finally almost upon us.
00:09We got the PS5 reveal not too long ago, and we got that event with all the exclusive games and the teasers and the hardware reveal and everything.
00:17We saw the two different versions. Everything's very dramatic.
00:20Now I was going to wait, typically I wait until I have a device in my hands before I can at least give my first impressions of it, let alone a review.
00:28But pretty much non-stop since that event, people have been asking me about it, talking about it, and there's just so much conversation to be had from that reveal.
00:36So maybe let's have that conversation.
00:38Now the one main thing Sony did not reveal at that event was the price of the PS5.
00:44I have some guesses and there's some rumors floating around and we'll get to that for sure in this video.
00:58But generally, yeah, they didn't reveal the price officially or the release date. Bummer.
01:03But there is still a lot to say about what we did see and what did get revealed.
01:08Now I'm a PS4 user myself, some of you might not know that, but that was actually my first gaming console ever and my current gaming console of choice.
01:17So I've been looking forward to PS5 and seeing what it would bring seven years later.
01:21I've also been keeping my eye on Xbox Series X, but that's a whole separate video.
01:26So for PS5, first of all, the design. The controversial design.
01:31I'm not going to lie, I kind of do like it.
01:34Now I'm sure you guys will all have your own thoughts in the comments.
01:37It seems like people either love it or hate it, kind of like the Cybertruck.
01:42But there is a lot to actually think about that goes into the design of a new console.
01:47Number one is how big is it? Because it's got to fit underneath a TV or somewhere where the previous box would have fit.
01:54And there's no scale here in the announcement, but there's a lot of educated guesses being made based on the size of the disk drive.
02:00And those guesses peg it as basically the biggest console ever. It's really tall.
02:06So then naturally, question number two is can it go sideways?
02:09And yes, officially it can go sideways and this is the only way it'll fit under my TV.
02:15But then just subjectively, I think it kind of looks like a futuristic version of what you might expect a next gen console to look like from some alien planet or whatever.
02:26But they really leaned into this aesthetic and it trickles down to the controller and the headphones and everything else.
02:32I actually think the Xbox Series X looks better.
02:35I think it looks more modern and minimal, even though it's more boring, if that makes sense.
02:40Though then again, maybe there's been some mock-ups.
02:42If Sony made a black version of the PS5, I think it would change a lot more minds, get more people on board.
02:49Especially because white plastic doesn't have the best reputation for aging well and people keep their consoles for several years.
02:55So that could be interesting to see down the road.
02:58I'm sure dbrand will have a field day with this one though.
03:00Okay, so there's two versions, the regular PS5 and then the PlayStation 5 digital edition that's just missing the optical drive.
03:08I thought it was kind of funny that so many people were caught off guard by there being these two different versions.
03:13But it actually makes perfect sense for several reasons.
03:17First of all, I and people like me will be getting the digital only version.
03:23I have a good enough internet connection that I download all my games.
03:27I've never bought a physical game and I don't need the Blu-ray player, so I'll get the digital version.
03:33That's fine.
03:34But there are definitely people who will buy this console who, one, don't have amazing internet connections and can't download every single game.
03:41And so they have a physical games collection.
03:43And two, people who literally use this console as their only Blu-ray player.
03:47My PS4 is my only Blu-ray player right now.
03:51I don't have any Blu-rays and I don't use them.
03:53But PS5 is a 4K Blu-ray player and for a lot of people, that's also pretty useful.
03:58So the digital version that I'll be getting, it looks a bit more elegant.
04:01You know, it doesn't look like they finished the design and then remembered,
04:04Oh, right, forgot, we have to put an optical drive on there somewhere.
04:08We'll just stick it over to the side here.
04:10But then with that missing part, it'll also most definitely be a bit cheaper.
04:15Matter of fact, let's just get to the price.
04:16Let's just talk about the price for a second.
04:19The rumors are all over the place.
04:22So the PS3 launched for $599.
04:25Then the PS4 launched for $399 back in 2013.
04:30And so now people are saying with all these new incredible capabilities and all these expectations,
04:35Sony didn't announce the price because it's going to be super expensive.
04:39Probably like a thousand bucks or something.
04:41But that, I don't know.
04:43I don't think so.
04:44I think, and there's some rumors, of course, to back this up and potentially leaks as well, I think.
04:48But I think it'll cost $499 for the PS5 and possibly $399 for the digital-only edition.
04:56Something like that.
04:57And I don't even think just removing the optical drive has to be a $100 difference.
05:01It might be something like $499 and $449 for the digital-only versus the main PS5.
05:07Somewhere like that.
05:08Like just with the history of pricing for these consoles,
05:12if Sony wants 100 million people to impulse buy an upgrade from their PS4,
05:18they can't really charge $700, $800 or more for this console.
05:23I could see it being in the $500-something ballpark, but anything higher than that seems unlikely.
05:29Then again, all this is TBD.
05:32They didn't yet announce that price.
05:34The actual tech inside of the PS5 is also, of course, a big upgrade from the 7-year-old PS4, as you'd expect.
05:40It's all solid-state storage now instead of a hard drive.
05:43I think that's the biggest difference.
05:44But it's also an AMD 8-core CPU and a 10.28 teraflop variable frequency GPU.
05:51And there's 16 gigs of RAM in there.
05:53Some people, including some YouTubers, even my friend Austin Evans,
05:57are comparing the power of the PS5 to that of a modern-day, straight-up tower desktop gaming PC.
06:05And I don't quite see it there yet.
06:07I think, obviously, something with a smaller body like that doesn't quite have the thermal envelope.
06:12It can't really match the raw power of a gaming PC.
06:18But the thing about the games, here's the thing about the games.
06:22These games can develop and optimize for every little detail, every maximum of the PS5.
06:30Because everyone playing these games has the same PS5.
06:33Whereas if you're developing a PC game, for example, optimization's a bit harder.
06:38There's so many various different parts and compatibilities.
06:42Anywhere from a $200 to a $2,000 tower could be playing your game.
06:47That's much harder.
06:48So you can expect these new PS5 games to have much better lighting, ray tracing, better textures,
06:54and just overall bigger, better maps and more realism.
06:58We saw a ton of this in that teaser livestream.
07:00I think the games look pretty good for the most part.
07:04Not all dramatically next-gen real or anything mind-blowing to the point where I feel like I need it now.
07:11But, you know, they look like next-gen games.
07:14Better than PS4 games.
07:15Honestly, there were only two games in that huge teaser trailer event that I really cared about.
07:21And they're very different.
07:23NBA 2K21 and Gran Turismo 7.
07:27So the NBA 2K21 trailer was a bit cringy if I'm being honest.
07:32To me, it's pretty obvious that they're nowhere near done with the game.
07:36They didn't show any real gameplay.
07:38It was just a teaser of Zion Williamson, potential future face of the NBA,
07:42in a really dramatically lit gym, staring down absolutely no one, sweating profusely, and then dunking.
07:50And that's pretty much it.
07:51When you're playing the gameplay itself, you'll never see all this dramatic lighting and this sweat.
07:57But for the teaser, they're like, oh, we got to add as much glistening sweat as possible.
08:01But Gran Turismo, I think, looked really good.
08:04This looks like a game that's a lot closer to done, first of all.
08:07But it looks like a game that's going to take full advantage of the PS5 in a lot of ways.
08:12And they showed much more of what looked like, you know, typical gameplay.
08:15And this is a game where you want it to be as realistic as possible.
08:19So you go all out with lighting and reflections and detail all over the map.
08:24And, of course, now the SSD and the new hardware can handle all that.
08:27PS5 also supports 120Hz 4K or 8K output.
08:33So the future-proofing is definitely real here.
08:35Now, I don't have 120Hz or 8K TV at home, like most people don't.
08:42But Gran Turismo 7 seems like the kind of game that would do great at high refresh rate.
08:46I would love to play it at 120fps for better reaction times and just a more responsive feel.
08:51Looks super good.
08:52Also, I just thought of this.
08:53Just as a side note, I hope the PS5 is quieter than the PS4.
08:58I don't know how many of you guys have a PS4, but if you'll notice,
09:01after like half an hour of playing 2K or really anything, the fans are spinning 100%.
09:06Like it sounds like a jet engine about to take off.
09:08And obviously with these games taking full advantage of the PS5 again,
09:12it's probably pushing it to the limits.
09:14I just hope it doesn't have the same acoustic problem as the PS4.
09:20But also just for fun, I looked at another game that wasn't in the trailer,
09:23the golf game, PGA 2K21.
09:26And it looks nowhere near as good as the ones that were teased.
09:31There's some teaser gameplay on their YouTube channel.
09:34I'll link it below that like button.
09:36But look at the golfer.
09:38Look at the crowds.
09:40I mean that, to me, that doesn't scream,
09:44wow, next-gen gaming really enabled this to happen.
09:47Like you do have better textures and shading of the grass.
09:51And everything's clearly a bit better than last year.
09:54But yeah, there's going to be a wide range of games
09:56and how they take advantage of all this new hardware.
09:59Overall though, from what's been revealed, I'm excited.
10:02I'm excited for better looking, more realistic games generally
10:06and the franchises that I'm used to playing getting better.
10:09And also from all the other titles they've committed to,
10:12just maybe trying out one or two other games that look really fun,
10:15just because I guess we have more time on our hands now.
10:18But hey, let me know what you guys think in the comment section below.
10:21I know we're kind of stepping out of the usual element here,
10:23giving impressions of something before we actually get it.
10:26This is probably what Sony wants.
10:29But trust me, when we do get it in here,
10:31there will be an impressions.
10:32There will be a full review.
10:33Make sure to subscribe to see that,
10:35if you haven't already, when it comes out.
10:37Either way, I'll leave it at that.
10:39Thanks for watching.
10:40Catch you guys in the next one.
10:42Peace.
