00:00Okay, so the year's wrapping up, and this year, in 2020, we saw a pretty decent selection of gaming laptops that came out, right?
00:07There were a few that stood out as being pretty special, like the AMD-based gaming laptops. Those were nice to see.
00:12But I really think that 2020's gaming laptops were mostly refreshes of older devices, which is perfectly fine, right?
00:21Some years are gonna have, like, a slower year like that, like an eco round.
00:26Next year, I think we're gonna see three big developments in the gaming laptop space.
00:30Number one, I think we're gonna see way more premium AMD-based gaming laptops.
00:35Like, just high-end, like ultra-premium devices that are really well-made, yet rock the new AMD stuff, hopefully.
00:43Secondly, I think we're gonna see a bunch of the RTX 30 series gaming laptops.
00:48Who knows what the performance will be like, but I think they'll be pretty solid.
00:51But the third one, and this is what this video's about,
00:53I think we're gonna see a lot of devices with this screen in it.
00:58So this is a device that I was sent, and I think this is, like, the world's first 1440p, 165Hz gaming panel.
01:07It is high-resolution, high-refresh laptop gaming.
01:11So I was able to get my hands on this unit because Electronics, the company that makes this particular device,
01:16they're the first company to actually sell these types of panels on gaming laptops.
01:20They're gonna beat everyone else. They're literally the first to market.
01:24Super fast response time. I measured it at 2.95 milliseconds. It's fast.
01:28And the best thing about these screens is that they're not super expensive.
01:31This is a regular screen. It's made by BOE, it's, like, maybe $50 more than, like, a 1080p panel.
01:38It is a regularly priced screen. And this was the thing about high-resolution gaming laptops before.
01:44You could get 4K panels before, right? 120Hz.
01:46They had slow response times, but you could get them.
01:49But they were, like, $400 or $500 premiums over regular gaming laptops, right?
01:53So it was just a really hard feature to recommend.
01:56This panel just makes so much more sense.
01:59And I think because of the inclusion of these new powerful GPUs, like RTX 20 series, 30 series,
02:04it just makes sense to have higher-resolution screens on these devices.
02:09Now, I've played a lot of games over the past couple of weeks on this screen.
02:12This has been the only machine that I've been using for PC gaming.
02:15And there's some very obvious advantages that come with high-resolution stuff.
02:19But there's some disadvantages that I feel like you guys should be aware of,
02:22because this will be coming down the pipe.
02:24This will be a readily available option for, I think, the vast majority of gaming laptop manufacturers
02:31coming the next couple of months.
02:33Okay. Advantages first.
02:35Obviously, high-resolution gaming looks really nice, right?
02:38It's a lot sharper.
02:39And in some games, you're seeing details that just didn't exist at 1080p.
02:43And websites, they tend to look a little nicer with more resolution.
02:46Same with your desktop.
02:47You have more pixels, you have more real estate to place your windows around.
02:51And when you sit at a regular laptop distance, right?
02:53When you're, I don't know, 18, 20 inches away from your screen.
02:56That's how I imagine most people use their laptops.
02:59It feels super sharp.
03:01It's just, you don't see the pixels like you normally see on a 1080p screen.
03:05However, there are some disadvantages.
03:08And a couple of them didn't occur to me until I actually started using this.
03:11So the big one when it comes to gaming is that when you have a high-resolution screen,
03:16your GPU has to work a little bit harder to pump out the pixels to fill it all up, right?
03:20And you're seeing a drop of about 20 to sometimes even 30%,
03:24depending on the game and the graphic settings.
03:27And it's significant, right?
03:28It's not something that you would just be like,
03:30Eh, whatever, I'll play at the higher resolution.
03:32You do have to kind of pick and choose your graphic settings in a more conscious manner
03:36because of the higher resolution.
03:39Now, I would say that the vast majority of modern-day GPUs
03:43can easily handle AAA titles at this resolution, right?
03:47You saw this year, 2020, we saw a ton of games come out,
03:50and the RTX 20 series just, they handle it so easily,
03:53it's kind of weird to be doing benchmarks at 1080p.
03:56It's just like you're getting 200 frames per second, right?
04:00So it's dropped, but now it's more appropriate to the caliber of screen.
04:05The other disadvantage that I noticed is scaling.
04:07So let's say you're playing a demanding title, like the upcoming Cyberpunk game,
04:11and you're playing it on this system with a 1440p panel.
04:14But because the frame rate isn't amazing, you want to drop it down to 1080p.
04:17Because of the way that 1440p panels work,
04:20when you scale it down to 1080p, it becomes blurry.
04:24It's noticeably less sharp.
04:25And I mean less sharp than even a regular 1080p panel.
04:28That's just the nature of how 1440p displays scale down.
04:32The other thing is battery life.
04:33So when you have more pixels, it just takes more juice to power it,
04:37and based on my limited testing with this unit,
04:39it's noticeable, but I wouldn't consider it to be really significant
04:43in terms of battery life for regular use.
04:46Now when it comes to a purchase decision,
04:48I do think that the availability of a high-resolution panel
04:51makes things a little bit more complex.
04:53Like, you now have to be more mindful of the type of games that you're going to be playing.
04:58Like if you're someone who wants to play more open-world environmental games
05:02that tend to be a little more demanding,
05:04you're going to have to make sure that if you pick up a 1440p screen
05:08that your GPU is very powerful,
05:11or else you're going to be forced to be playing at 1080p
05:13in like a blurry scaled mode,
05:15or you're going to be lowering the graphic settings on your game
05:18just because you didn't combo all those pieces, right?
05:21So you just, you got to be aware of the purchase, right?
05:25You just got to think about what you're getting and what you're getting it for.
05:27It's a little bit weird, right?
05:29It's strange to think that this has become more of a thoughtful choice,
05:34but it's just the nature of having options.
05:36One other thing I want to mention,
05:38if you've, if you're curious, right,
05:41does higher resolution somehow make you a better gamer?
05:43I don't think it does.
05:44Over the past couple weeks I've been testing it,
05:46and my performance seems to be identical.
05:49I still get rolled.
05:50But yeah, this is kind of like an early look
05:53at the high-resolution 1440p gaming laptops.
05:58Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
05:59Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
06:00See you guys next time.
