00:00You know, sometimes you see specs leaked on a phone, or you see some photos that are leaked
00:08about upcoming phones, and you build an idea in your head of what that phone will be like.
00:14And sometimes, that idea is wrong.
00:16So these are the Galaxy Note 10 Plus than the regular Galaxy Note 10.
00:20And I liked them a lot more than I thought I would.
00:23Now at the briefing, when they first announced these phones, I remember thinking that, sure,
00:27the Note 10 Plus, really easy phone to just recognize as being the flagship.
00:31It's a very powerful phone, very expensive phone.
00:34But the Note 10, the regular Note 10, felt just underwhelming.
00:39It was a smaller phone, 1080p screen, a lot of features that were missing from the big
00:43boy version.
00:45And it was like, the first thing I actually thought of was like, why does this exist?
00:49What purpose does a smaller Note 10 with worse paper specs have when the traditional Galaxy
00:54Note line is just a flagship product with the best specs possible?
00:58But it turns out, both of these phones are really solid, and I've really grown to like
01:02the smaller, regular Note 10.
01:04Now before I get into the meat of this video, I want to talk about the lack of the headphone
01:07jack on both of these devices.
01:09Both the Note 10 and the Note 10 Plus no longer have headphone jacks.
01:13And Samsung just straight up removed them, and it sucks.
01:16I think they're going to get a lot of backlash from Note fans and from Samsung users.
01:20I really hate that it's gone, but it's just how it's played out.
01:23Now I don't think Samsung just copied Apple for the sake of copying.
01:27I think they did just follow in Apple's footsteps, but the reason why they did it, the reason
01:31why I think they removed the headphone jack at this point in time specifically, is because
01:35they're now in the position to actually profit from removing the headphone jack.
01:40They've done the math, right?
01:41Clearly people aren't buying Samsung's phones just because of the existence of the headphone
01:45jack, right?
01:46So they've turned to the dark side, it's time to dump the jack and to sell you, alongside
01:50with their phone, a pair of wireless headphones.
01:52And I think at this point in time, the only companies left on the market that are still
01:56making phones with headphone jacks are companies that just do not have a pair of popular wireless
02:01headphones to sell alongside with their phones.
02:04Because everyone else, like Apple, Google, OnePlus, and now Samsung will all gladly sell
02:09you a pair of wireless headphones to go with your headphone jackless phones.
02:13It's gone, I hate that it's gone, but that's just what we have.
02:16Okay, back to the actual phone.
02:19So the design of this phone, I like the way that these things look way more in real life
02:23than they did in photos.
02:24A note on the colors, the Aura Glow, like the kind of shimmery silver color that they
02:29have, it looks really extra in videos and stuff like that, it's got this rainbow sheen
02:34to it.
02:35It looks crazy like that if you shine a lot of light on it, but I don't think it's as
02:39obnoxious or as loud as it may seem in videos.
02:41If you like that look but you're hesitant because you thought it might be too bright
02:44or too colorful, I think for regular use it's relatively muted, it's just outdoors it really
02:49blasts.
02:50Like you saw the thumbnail in this video, that was shot with just lights hitting this
02:54thing at the right angle and it just glows, but often times it's just a more muted silver
02:58color.
02:59Now another thing I really like about these phones is the frame.
03:01So these use a stainless steel frame, kind of like how the iPhone X and XS have used
03:05that same kind of stainless steel frame around the phone.
03:09Every other phone that I've used recently has had an aluminum frame, and the vast majority
03:13of premium kind of flagship phones use an aluminum frame.
03:17Now this is the OnePlus 7 Pro, and I've dropped this a bunch of times since I've switched
03:21over to it, and this material is soft.
03:23It scratches, it dents, it's even cracked the glass in one of the corners, but stainless
03:28steel frames are just a lot stronger.
03:29Not that you're going to be dropping your phone every day, but it's just a more durable
03:33frame material than aluminum.
03:36Other changes to the Note 10 this year, the button position, so they got rid of the kind
03:40of traditional spot of the power button or the sleep wake button, and they've repurposed
03:45the Bixby button on the left to have that function, and you can customize it.
03:48So I've set mine so that a single tap will sleep and wake the phone, a double tap will
03:52launch the camera, and then a press and hold will launch the kind of power menu, and there's
03:56just no more Bixby functionality off of that button just by how I've set it up.
04:01So it's nice that you can do that, there's just no more accidental Bixby launches because
04:06the button no longer does that.
04:08Okay, the screen, so I'm coming off of the OnePlus 7 Pro when I'm coming over to this
04:13phone, and the resolution on the smaller phone is stuck at 1080p, and I'll be honest, when
04:18I first found out that it was a 1080p pentile display on a Galaxy Note, I was like, what?
04:24These phones are supposed to be the Samsung flagships, these are the Galaxy Notes, they're
04:28supposed to have the highest resolution screens you can get on any Samsung phone.
04:32It turns out though that the 1080p screen is very good, like maybe my eyes aren't sharp
04:37enough, like I can tell the difference between the 1080p screen and the 1440p screen, you
04:42can tell them apart, especially if you have them right beside each other, but there's
04:45no way that I would ever look at the regular Note 10 screen and think, this is insufficient,
04:49like this is lacking in some way or another.
04:51I really think it's a fantastic screen.
04:55The shortcoming though, I would say, is the lack of high refresh, like a 90Hz screen would
04:59have been so nice, and coming off the OnePlus 7 Pro, there is a noticeable difference between
05:04the 60 and 90Hz refresh rate, but that's what we have, 60Hz screens on Samsung flagships
05:10for this year.
05:11The hole punch at the top, I actually don't mind it at all, I thought it would coming
05:14off the very clean OnePlus 7 Pro screen, but it's just, it's there, I really don't seem
05:19to notice it.
05:20Now one of the benefits of having a 1080p screen is battery life, when you run a lower
05:24resolution screen, you just have extended battery life, and this phone does not have
05:29a big battery.
05:30I'm only getting like 4, 4.5 hours of screen on time over the past few days, I get it,
05:34it's a relatively small device that has a pen, there's not a lot of room in there for
05:37battery, but I was just hopeful that it would be getting better than 4 hours of screen on
05:41time.
05:42This is still relatively early on in the whole review process, and I'm sure I'm running some
05:46kind of like early hardware and early software, but yeah, that's what we have so far.
05:51Shorter than battery life than I had hoped, and even expected.
05:55Okay, the camera system, this is a triple camera system, the Note 10 Plus has an added
06:01fourth sensor, like a depth camera.
06:03The photos are clean from what I can see so far, but the night shots in particular look
06:06really good.
06:07Now, the main feature of the Note 10 and the Note 10 Plus is the S Pen, and this year it's
06:13been improved, they've added some gyros in here, so it's got more features and stuff.
06:17This is the best feature of the phone, and it's the most unique feature of the Note lineup,
06:22but whether or not you can fit it into your life or your workflow is entirely dependent
06:26on you.
06:27Now you have like your regular note taking stuff, you have the remote shutter stuff for
06:30the camera, they also have gesture controls, which honestly feel a little gimmicky to me.
06:34I don't ever see myself using the gestures to navigate around instead of just swiping
06:38or tapping on the screen.
06:40They also have an SDK, which I honestly think is just super ambitious for Samsung to think
06:44that some developer is going to make a niche app, have niche controls for those like few
06:50people that have this particular S Pen to navigate in their apps, like, I don't know,
06:55I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon, but the pen is fantastic.
06:58Now, if you're someone who's been interested in the idea of a pen-based phone like the
07:03Notes in the past, but you've been turned off by its size, I think the regular Note
07:0810 this year is like, you just got to take a look at it.
07:11When I picked this up for the first time, I realized why they made the smaller Note
07:1410.
07:15The big boy Note 10 Plus, like we've seen this form factor for years, like the big phone
07:19with the pen, it suits a lot of people just fine, but I think a lot of people are turned
07:22off by its size.
07:23A lot of people are just intimidated by how big this phone is, like it doesn't fit in
07:28your pocket.
07:29This is like, it's big, it's even bigger than the OnePlus 7 Pro, which is already a giant
07:32phone.
07:33This fits in most people's hands just a lot more comfortably, and I much prefer the ergonomics
07:37on the smaller Note 10 than the big one, despite its technical shortcomings.
07:41Now, the last thing I want to talk about is price, because you cannot talk about the most
07:46expensive Samsung flagship without a discussion about the price.
07:49These start at $950 for the small one and $1100 for the Plus, and the presence and availability
07:55of the S10 and the Note 9 from last year really affect how I view these in terms of value.
08:00Obviously, if you just really want the latest and greatest Note, you're just going to get
08:04one.
08:05I think the one that's special, the one that's most unique, is the smaller one.
08:08The Note 10, even with its lowered specs, is something that just did not exist before.
08:13Just offers an experience that you can't get with any of the older phones.
08:16You have to spend the big money to get this small phone with the S Pen.
08:19Okay, hope you guys enjoyed this video.
08:20Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
08:22See you guys next time.
