00:00Alright, we are at Toronto Motorsports Park.
00:11It is a snowy day.
00:13Usually my videos have some sort of a purpose, like comparing an old WRX to a new WRX, which
00:19I did before.
00:20You might remember that.
00:21However, I don't have a reason for today's video, it's just that we have a snowy track
00:25and I've got a Subaru.
00:27The 2003 WRX Bug Eye.
00:30These are starting to become harder to find and the Subaru tax is making it difficult
00:33to find them for cheap.
00:34It doesn't help either that Subarus often rust almost as well as they drive.
00:39Either way, this generation of WRX comes with a 227 horsepower motor with 217 torques and
00:45honestly that's still good by today's standards.
00:48Also in this generation, you get a viscous limited slip differential in the rear, which
00:51while no torsion diff is in my opinion still better than the open diff and annoying brake
00:55vectoring you get in the new ones.
00:58You also get a mediocre transmission, a loud interior, but some excellent styling and a
01:02famous all-wheel drive system.
01:04The point is that these WRXs are starting to become modern classics.
01:08So I came out with the team at the Pinnacle Advanced Driving Academy to see what it's
01:11like in the snow.
01:13As you can see, fun was had by all.
01:14The track was snowy and icy so some hilarious low-speed drifting was in order.
01:19So I took the Bug Eye out to remind myself why I love these things so much.
01:24There is something therapeutic about an all-wheel drive car and a completely snowy track with
01:31no rules whatsoever.
01:33This is just about the best thing that you can do in the motoring world.
01:37Alright, the best thing about these old Subarus is the fact that they feel turbocharged.
01:47There's something about the fact that boost just comes on so frantically that you have
01:53to deal with it.
01:54It's a part of it, it gives the car personality, the character.
01:57So as I go through the corner here, all of a sudden boost comes on and you have to deal
02:05with it.
02:06You're just constantly at the wheel on a slippery surface and that is the best part about it.
02:14And flick the other way.
02:20Too much steering lock on the throttle.
02:22Air comes around and since it is a Subaru, I just stay on the throttle.
02:29Now that's the thing about these, the Subaru all-wheel drive, oh my god, I just chugged,
02:39that wasn't me, holy.
02:42You just get on the power and the all-wheel drive in these just kind of pulls you out
02:49of the corner.
02:50I'm trying to talk while sliding, not the easiest thing to do in the world.
02:56I love these old Subarus because they feel very, very raw in an excellent way.
03:04The steering in these is perfect, right?
03:09Lots of feel from the front end, a fairly quick rack.
03:14The moral of the story here is that you don't really need an STI and you don't need a new
03:19car.
03:21I'm having as much fun as I have ever had driving this car on this snowy course right
03:26now.
03:29Fourth gear, boost and breaking, can we break in time?
03:38Break it in and slide through, third gear, 70 kilometers an hour, one big slide, $5,000,
03:49this car is $5,000.
03:51I'll take a beater Subaru any day of the week.
