00:00Today could be a very sad and expensive day for me.
00:03You see, my Porsche 911 996 sometimes makes this odd rattling, tappy sound from this area.
00:08And these cars are famous for having a couple of problems which can cause the engines to suddenly blow up.
00:14I'm going to be finding out whether my car is suffering from one of those problems.
00:19It could be about to die.
00:25I'd like to introduce you to Matt Barnett.
00:27Matt owns Wren Works in Stevenage and I've been bringing my 996E for how many years?
00:31Eight years at least, maybe more.
00:33Doing all the surfacing and stuff on it.
00:34And now it's got this sort of like weird rattle.
00:37And two problems that these suffer with, two major problems which can write off the engine.
00:41What are they exactly?
00:42So we've got potential IMS bearings.
00:44That's a bearing in the bottom of the engine that can, you know, it can break up over time.
00:48And that will destroy the engine.
00:50That will be the end.
00:52That bore score is another issue.
00:54Although it doesn't, not quite so common on 3.4s, more on the 3.6.
00:57But it's still worth a look.
00:58So we use our bore scope camera, look down the cylinders.
01:01We can drop the oil, look at the oil filter, see if there's any particles of metal.
01:04And also send a sample of your oil away for analysis.
01:07Okay, so I'm a little bit nervous.
01:08You're going to use this special device to look inside my cylinders and see if the bores are scored.
01:12Fingers crossed.
01:13Now, I'm a bit silly, right?
01:14So I thought I'd do some upgrades.
01:16Now, I should probably wait until we find out whether the engines toast or not.
01:20But I've always wanted a short shifter kit on it.
01:23So I'm going to get you to fit a GT3 short shifter.
01:25Yeah, 997 GT3 short shifter.
01:27And the discs and pads are a bit kind of cheap from when I bought the car.
01:31We're going to fit some EBC blue stuff, some performance brakes.
01:33We've got some brake lines and some fluid to go with it, so.
01:36Let's do it.
01:37So I've got these pots, which are probably like they use them at a hospital,
01:40but we're going to use them for the car.
01:42So hopefully we're not going to get covered in hot oil.
01:44We could do.
01:45So be careful.
01:46There you go.
01:47Let's...
01:49Whoa.
01:49It's tight.
01:50I'm going to move back for this.
01:52You're a professional.
01:52Oh, look at that.
01:53There's a pot.
01:54You want to get an early flush.
01:56Stuff at the bottom.
02:00I'll give you another one.
02:01We're going to get oily.
02:03Very clean, Matt.
02:04Look at that.
02:05Okay, so we're going to have a look on the underside.
02:07I notice already you're mopping up a bit of oil.
02:10Bit of a leak on the gearbox there.
02:11What about the rear main seal?
02:13Because that's a seal between the engine and the gearbox which leaks.
02:16Exactly that.
02:16So that's the seal in this area here.
02:18It's a little bit sticky, Matt.
02:19Is that bad?
02:20I've seen much worse.
02:22You had me worried there.
02:23There you go.
02:23Okay, let's move further down.
02:25We can see you've got all your nice Ohlins suspension on there.
02:28And Tarot droplinks.
02:29So we're going to be changing your brake flexi hoses.
02:31And your hard pipes, your calipers are looking pretty decent at the front.
02:34And we changed these discs.
02:35They're starting to get a bit...
02:36Oh yeah, they're not very nice, are they?
02:38Exactly that.
02:38So we'll deal with those.
02:39Check your radiators.
02:40All looking pretty good.
02:42Air conditioning pipes along the seal.
02:44These are not quite common to leak.
02:46Lose your air conditioning gas.
02:47There's a little bit of...
02:48Yeah, this I think is pretty grotty out there today, Matt.
02:51It's the water from the road, not from the air conditioning system.
02:54Absolutely.
02:55So I'm a little concerned with the brake pipes to the rear calipers.
02:58So again, we're going to try and change these flexi hoses.
03:01But I'd suggest that we definitely replace these.
03:03Struggled with those today, so we'll probably order those from Porsche.
03:05It might be a future job.
03:06But no, all in all, it's looking good.
03:08So I don't need to worry about those,
03:09but we might need to worry about what we find in the oil filter.
03:14Let's have a look at that.
03:15Let's do that.
03:15Right, Matt, you've got me working here, haven't you?
03:17That's it.
03:18So we're going to remove the oil filter.
03:19I've cracked it off for you so it's not so tight.
03:21There you go.
03:22He's cracked it off.
03:23I've cracked it off.
03:25I can do this by hand now, right?
03:26You can probably do it by hand.
03:28I'm a little bit concerned about getting covered in oil.
03:29You will get covered in oil.
03:30Well, you'll do it, then I'm not.
03:32That's me done.
03:33There you go.
03:33I'll move the ratchet just a little bit.
03:35There you go.
03:35I'll get covered in oil.
03:37Go on.
03:38Eh, it wasn't too bad.
03:40Ah, not too bad.
03:41That's it. So we're going to cut this open on the bench.
03:44Have a little look between the pleats of the oil filter and see if we've got any...
03:49Shiny bits.
03:49Any shiny bits.
03:50Hopefully not.
03:51Right, so what we're doing now is ripping open the oil filter.
03:55Oh, go on.
03:57It's going to stretch out fully, right?
03:58Here we go.
03:59We're going to stretch that out fully.
04:00Teeny tiny bit of sparkly in there.
04:02So I would say it's definitely going to be good to get that oil analysed.
04:07Just to see what's in it.
04:08If it's sort of a ferrous material, then it could potentially be...
04:11That bearing.
04:12Early stages of your IMS bearing.
04:14Oh...
04:16We can pass a magnet over that so that we can see if it's magnetic.
04:19See if it's...
04:20You know, bearing shell material is not magnetic.
04:22Bearing shell?
04:23No, but whereas the IMS would be.
04:25So let's see...
04:26So I want it to pick up.
04:27It's not picking... Yeah, it is.
04:30It's magnetic, isn't it?
04:31So it is magnetic.
04:32So is that a good thing?
04:34No, that means it potentially is the IMS bearing.
04:37But send the oil away.
04:38See what it comes back to.
04:39I don't want to drive the car now.
04:40That's it.
04:41You can leave it here.
04:42Leave it here and we're crack on.
04:44I don't know how to get home.
04:46You've cooled it early enough, hopefully.
04:47We might get to the bearing and it's absolutely fine.
04:49In which case, we've got some foreign matter in this oil filter from somewhere.
04:53So then we need to try and establish what it is.
04:54But again, this is...
04:55Oil analysis will tell you what that material is.
04:58Okay.
04:59So I think we need to maybe not fit all the other parts that you've got.
05:03Yeah, let's not do that.
05:04That's it. We get the box out.
05:06It sounds worse than it is.
05:07We get the box out.
05:08We look at the IMS.
05:09And yeah, we'll fit you a new one.
05:11Okay.
05:12Let's do the balls while we're here.
05:13There could be two problems then.
05:15Yeah, exactly.
05:16It's unusual with 3.4s to have ball score.
05:18But let's have a look.
05:19So, Matt, we've removed the spark plugs.
05:22And this is a little bit of good news.
05:25I need some good news.
05:26I mean, you can generally tell when we remove plugs.
05:28We're looking at the colour of the plugs.
05:30And when 996s, 997s suffer with ball score,
05:33you tend to find...
05:34Well, firstly, you get usually a black exhaust pipe.
05:37But you would then tend to find that maybe one, two,
05:40or possibly more of the plugs would be different in colour,
05:43have oil deposits,
05:44possibly be really black and really fouled up.
05:46So, looking at your plugs, they're all identical in colour.
05:49So, that's a good sign.
05:50We're going to pop the camera down the cylinders.
05:52We're going to have a little look.
05:53We can take some images.
05:54And then we can look through them afterwards and we'll see.
05:57But yeah, I'm sure that's promising.
06:00I don't think we're going to find anything.
06:01I'm still quite obsessed about swarfing the oil, though.
06:04Well, that's it.
06:05I mean, we can deal with that.
06:08There we go.
06:08So, Matt has got his camera up inside the cylinders.
06:11We've been rotating the engine
06:12so that you can look at the cylinder lining with the pistons
06:16at their lowest position.
06:17We've gone through all the cylinders.
06:18And we've found some things which worried me at first,
06:23but may not actually be anything.
06:24Yeah, so what I would say, look,
06:25we've looked at all the cylinders.
06:27We found some discolouration sort of to the cylinder walls.
06:31But, I mean, nothing I would consider to be bore scoring.
06:34I mean, this is the worst.
06:35We're in cylinder six.
06:36It's a very slight line.
06:38You know, every 996, I think we look down,
06:42we're going to see some sort of marking.
06:44So that's wear from the pistons over time.
06:46I would say that's general wear and tear.
06:47Look, you've done a few miles.
06:49It's not going to look immaculate.
06:51I'm quite happy with that.
06:52And that's all six cylinders checked.
06:54We're going to see some discolouration.
06:56We're going to see a few little marks and a few little lines.
06:58But that is not scoring.
07:00I'm quite happy with that.
07:01Okay, good.
07:02So, Matt, you go out and do Porsche inspections for people
07:05when they're thinking about buying one.
07:06Or they come to us.
07:07Exactly that.
07:08And we carry out this procedure.
07:09And so with this, would you tell someone,
07:11don't buy this car?
07:12Or would you say, it's absolutely fine?
07:14We would report it.
07:15And then, obviously, you can take a view.
07:16But I'm quite happy with it.
07:18Would you buy it?
07:19Yes.
07:20There you go.
07:21At a normal price?
07:22At a normal price.
07:24Not at some horrendous discount.
07:25At a discounted price because it's got Porsche on it.
07:27No, no, no, no, no, no.
07:29Okay, I'll relax.
07:30Right, I won't fully relax because I'm going to leave the car with you, right?
07:33I need to leave it with you because I don't dare drive it
07:35because of those metallic bits in the oil.
07:37I'm going to go home and figure out how I'm going to get home.
07:39I'm going to take my oil samples.
07:41I'm going to get them checked out.
07:42And it might be a case I'm going to come back
07:44and you're going to tear some of the engine down.
07:47I think so.
07:47Well, I think while you're gone,
07:48we're going to get it to a point where we get the gearbox
07:50sort of probably out of the car.
07:51And we'll get it to the point, to the IMS bearing.
07:54And then we'll give you a shout and you can come along.
07:56Okay, and we'll have a look at it.
07:57And you can have a look.
07:58Okay.
07:59So next step, analysis of the oil
08:01and taking the engine apart to look at this IMS bearing.
08:05I've left my 996 at Renworks
08:07while I wait for the oil analysis to come back.
08:10And you join me now in my garage,
08:12which is where I'm going to keep my new 911 GT3 RS.
08:16Though I'm not sure this garage is quite large enough.
08:19I'm a bit worried about that.
08:20I'm less worried about if the oil analysis on my 996
08:24comes back with some bad news
08:26because I actually have the car covered by Warranty Wise.
08:29I've had a plan with Warranty Wise for the past few years now.
08:32And they provide extended warranties.
08:34You can be confident in on a wide range of vehicles.
08:38And for those over 12 years old,
08:40there's the classic car use car warranty,
08:43which is what I have for my Porsche 996.
08:46I knew when I bought the car
08:47that it had reputation for some serious and costly faults.
08:51And whenever I drove it,
08:52I was like super paranoid, like listening out
08:54for suspicious noises from the engine and the gearbox.
08:57And to tell you the truth,
08:58this was preventing me from truly enjoying the car.
09:01However, since having the Warranty Wise cover,
09:03I've been less bothered about something going wrong.
09:06So I've just been able to get on
09:07and finally enjoy driving the car,
09:10which after all is why I bought it in the first place.
09:13I know they've got me covered
09:14from repair costs to breakdown cover.
09:16Just so you know, certain parts of my car,
09:18such as the suspension, aren't covered
09:20because they've been modified.
09:22However, when buying a plan from Warranty Wise,
09:24you can just talk these kind of things through
09:26with their team to get a plan that works for you.
09:29To get a quote for your car
09:30or one you're thinking of buying,
09:32I've put a link to Warranty Wise
09:33in the description of this video.
09:35There's also a link in the pinned comment
09:37and a pop-out banner should be appearing
09:39in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
09:41Click that to go direct to Warranty Wise.
09:43Anyway, let's continue with this video
09:45and find out if I'm gonna have to start a repair
09:47with Warranty Wise.
09:48Oh, actually, before we do that,
09:50I promised you a quick update on my new 992 GT3 RS.
09:54Well, the car is on its way, but it has been delayed.
09:57It's finished most of production,
09:59but it's being held up for a bit of interior trim.
10:02Also, the German factory went on holiday for three weeks,
10:05which also delayed it.
10:06But its arrival is imminent.
10:09The only question is, will it be able to fit in this garage?
10:12Look, I'm gonna give you a quick look around the garage now.
10:16For those of you who spotted that this was my Fiat 126,
10:19well done.
10:19Ow, I'm falling over stuff here.
10:22Will my GT3 RS really fit in here?
10:27I'm not sure.
10:29Anyway, let's go and find out now
10:31whether I'm gonna have to start a repair with Warranty Wise.
10:35Back to Renworks.
10:36It's been a month, Matt, and I can see here,
10:38you have the gearbox out of my car.
10:40Gearbox is out.
10:41Why have you got the gearbox out?
10:43We're gonna check and replace your IMS bearing.
10:46But there's something really, really odd.
10:48So I had the oil sent away for analysis.
10:51It has come back.
10:52Now, we found metal bits in the oil filter.
10:54We did.
10:54The oil analysis has come back clean.
10:58Which is interesting.
10:59So they actually looked at the filter
11:00because I sent that off and they said,
11:01yes, it's ferrous material, but the oil is clean.
11:04And they said that those particles weren't necessarily
11:07anything to really worry about.
11:09What about other materials?
11:11Did they find anything else?
11:12No.
11:12So that's the other thing.
11:14So we were worried about bore scoring.
11:15And if we had bore scoring, you would expect some aluminium
11:18in the oil, wouldn't you?
11:19Absolutely.
11:20But do you know what I found?
11:21I remember when I bought the car ages ago,
11:23I got them to do a bore scope on it then just to be sure.
11:26And I've got the images here.
11:27So if you look at the images, they're the same.
11:30It hasn't really got any worse.
11:31So it's just general wear and tear within the cylinders,
11:34which we did sort of say it was.
11:36Could be.
11:36We do expect to see that.
11:39Because it hasn't actually progressed from this from years ago.
11:41Exactly.
11:42It's just some discoloration, some marks in the cylinders.
11:46We expect to see that.
11:47So that's lucky.
11:48But we do need to investigate exactly what that metal was
11:52in the filter.
11:53And we're going to take the IMS bearing out, see what it's like.
11:56It could be about to fall apart.
11:58We don't know.
11:58That's why we've got the gearbox out.
12:00Do you know what?
12:00I'm quite confident that the engine isn't toast.
12:03The IMS bearing may be.
12:04That could be the issue.
12:06But we can fix that, right?
12:07The engine hasn't detonated yet.
12:09No, no, no.
12:09So I reckon what we do, first of all, is carry on with what we were doing.
12:13We're going to fit the brakes to this car.
12:14So let's crack on with that.
12:15And then we'll get into the IMS bearing, have a look at it,
12:18and see if it's failing or is fine.
12:21And see if we can figure out where this metal came from, right?
12:23Sounds like a plan.
12:24So, Matt, here I have my EBC performance brake disc.
12:28And I'm going to earn a bit of money as being your assistant.
12:30I'm very good.
12:32So that goes on there.
12:33Well, thank you.
12:35This is where I drop it on my toe.
12:37There we go.
12:37OK.
12:38I actually need to spin it around slightly to line these holes up for these two little retaining screws.
12:42A few moments later.
12:45Get it on.
12:45Try and line it up as well as you can.
12:48Yep.
12:48Put the little screws in.
12:51There we go.
12:52Lovely job.
12:53That's your brake disc on.
12:54And that's it?
12:55That's it.
12:55So that's the disc on.
12:56Next thing, we're going to have to put the caliper on,
12:58connect the brake pipes because we've changed to these braided lines,
13:02and then we'll put the upgraded brake pads in.
13:05OK, let's do that then.
13:05At the same time.
13:06OK?
13:07So when we look at these braided hoses, so they should improve my brake feel, right?
13:12Yeah.
13:12They take some of the squidge away from the brake pedal because they're braided rather than made of rubber.
13:16So they expand less when you press the brake hard, so it gives you more pedal feel.
13:20Just on a general note, what's the corrosion looking like underneath here and my coil overs?
13:24I mean, it's not great to be fair.
13:26I mean, look, a good wire brush back.
13:28I mean, what we tend to do when we install coil overs is to make sure that we get some anti-corrosion protection on there.
13:33As a road car being used all year round, this is quite common to see.
13:37OK, so other than that, all looks fine in the suspension area.
13:40Yeah, it's all looking good.
13:41OK, brilliant.
13:42Let's get the pads into the calipers.
13:44We're going to get the calipers on.
13:45Yep.
13:46We're going to get the pipe connected to the caliper and then we're going to put the brake pads in.
13:49OK, let's do it.
13:49Cool.
13:56OK, so we're going to insert the brake pads, EBC blue stuffs.
14:01So a high-performance pad should give me plenty of bite and feel.
14:05Good for a track day.
14:06Good for... It's never going on track!
14:09But hey!
14:10Just drop them in, yeah?
14:11Drop them in, yeah, exactly that.
14:12We've got our little anti-squill shims already in the caliper.
14:16Slot it in.
14:18There we go.
14:19And that's it?
14:19That's it.
14:20We've got a spring and a pin and a clip to hold them in.
14:24Let's put them together then.
14:25That's it.
14:26Exactly that.
14:26I quite like the look of it, the blue pad and the black disc.
14:29It's just a shame that that's not going to stay black for long.
14:31It won't stay black for long.
14:32It's just a coating, isn't it?
14:33I'm surprised actually how easy it is to do the brakes.
14:36I remember doing them on my MX-5 and I had to take the caliper out and put them in the caliper
14:40and then install it onto the actual brake disc.
14:42Yeah.
14:42Unless I was doing that completely wrong and on all cars you can do it from the rear like this.
14:46Here we go.
14:53So Matt, we've done the brakes and now we're going to get into the exciting bit.
14:56That's it.
14:57So obviously the box is out, clutch is off, flywheel is off
14:59and we're going to take the IMS cover plate off now to see if the IMS is good or bad.
15:05Is this going to be the cause of that swarf?
15:07I sort of hope it is.
15:08I'm not sure.
15:09They didn't find swarf actually in the oil itself which you would usually see if the IMS was breaking up
15:15but we found some larger fragments.
15:17So we're going to have to try and see where they've come from.
15:20So maybe we're going to find something in here.
15:22So we're going to take this little cover plate off and have a look.
15:25Okay, let's do it.
15:26So, and this is the thing, isn't it, that people are really worried about on this car
15:29and a lot of people switch out the bearings just as a matter of course.
15:33Exactly that.
15:33Let's do it.
15:34Go on.
15:35I'm so excited.
15:35So we've sort of got it to a point.
15:36We've sort of started.
15:38We've slackened it.
15:38I've taken out the chain tensioners, locked the engine up to TDC.
15:42Here we go.
15:43Well, that looks like a bearing.
15:44That's it.
15:45It definitely looks like a bearing.
15:47I'll tell you what, it feels fine.
15:49Can I have a feel?
15:50There's no play.
15:50It feels really fluid and...
15:52So this has a dual row bearing which is a bit more reliable, isn't it?
15:56Yeah.
15:56But, mate, that just seems like it's absolutely rock solid and good.
16:00Exactly that.
16:01So what you would do if the bearing was failing, it would feel sort of gritty or graunchy when you twist it.
16:06So it's solid.
16:07Okay, so I'll tell you what, we've got to whip it out anyway.
16:10Let's get it out and then we'll maybe take off one of the seals and see if the bearing is starting to go on the inside
16:14because it could still be going a little bit.
16:16Let's get it out.
16:17Okay, let's get it out.
16:18Whoa, this is the exciting bit.
16:20So this is a part of the procedure that there's absolutely no way I can get involved in.
16:25Right, now I know we're going to make a really oily mess in a moment.
16:29So I'm going to pull our oil drainer over.
16:36There she goes.
16:39And that's the bearing in there.
16:42So if we get that on the table, pull off one of the seals and have a look at the actual ball races in there.
16:46That's it.
16:47Let's do it.
16:47So we have the bearing out here, Matt, and the seal, I mean, it all looks good.
16:53There's no way metal's getting past that.
16:54No, it does look in good condition and it feels very smooth.
16:58We can pull one of the seals out and have a look inside.
17:00Let's do that, yeah.
17:01There we go.
17:02So look, there's not much to see in there.
17:04Is there any metal on there?
17:06No, no signs of any, nothing at all.
17:08Those ball bearings look like new.
17:10This is absolutely fine.
17:12Yeah, it's fine.
17:12What's going on?
17:13We should always investigate.
17:15I mean, this could be your problem.
17:16So this, wait.
17:17That's the cover plate that bolts to the back of the engine.
17:20Yeah.
17:21There's a little chunk missing there.
17:22That little piece that's missing there is very similar to what we found in the oil filter.
17:26So I don't know what's going on.
17:27That little piece that's missing there is very similar to what we found in the oil filter.
17:31So I would say that potentially that is what we've seen.
17:34So if you had to bet your house, would you bet on that?
17:36I would say, yeah.
17:39Weird.
17:40Weird, very weird.
17:41But the bearing is good.
17:42But we'll switch it out for the new one anyway.
17:44Which is better.
17:44Which is better.
17:45Okay, let's get into that now.
17:47So now we have the new bearing that's going into the car.
17:49It's from EPS and we've sourced it from Design 911.
17:53Link is in the description.
17:54So what is different about this bearing?
17:56It looks quite different.
17:57There's no seal for starters.
17:58No seal.
17:59The main difference is it's using cylindrical rollers instead of ball bearings.
18:03So it can take far, far higher loads.
18:05I've fitted these for years and years and years.
18:09Never, ever have we had one come back with an issue.
18:12And we've got the new backing plate here as well.
18:14We've got the new cover plate.
18:14Which has a little groove in it.
18:15Basically, that's to allow oil to lubricate this area here between the end of the bearing and the cover plate.
18:21And there's something you're going to have to do with that bearing before we actually fit it.
18:24What is it?
18:25We freeze the bearing and we leave it in the freezer for a good few hours before we install it.
18:28It allows it to shrink and it just means you're less aggressive when you're trying to install the bearing.
18:33So this has currently been in the freezer overnight.
18:35Okay.
18:35It's freezing my hands at the moment.
18:36So let's get it back in the freezer for a bit.
18:38We're going to pop it in, yep, in the freezer for a bit.
18:40And then we'll install it.
18:41So now we come to the brutal bit.
18:43Inserting the bearing in there.
18:45And you're going to have to use brute force, aren't you?
18:47We do.
18:47Use a little bit of bearing lock around the bearing.
18:49And then we're going to use a dead blow hammer to drive it in.
18:52So it does look a little bit aggressive, but...
18:54Let's do it.
18:55There you go.
18:55I'm nervous.
18:56So the bearing's very cold, been in the freezer for a while.
19:00And so it should make it easier to fit it in.
19:02If it doesn't go in properly, are we in big trouble?
19:05Yeah, I mean, we've got to try and get it in straight.
19:07I'm going to sort of get out of your way.
19:10This is a bit like a surgeon doing a nose job.
19:12It looks hideous when it's being done.
19:14They use a hammer, whack, the bone in your nose.
19:17And this is the same thing.
19:20There we go.
19:22You happy with that?
19:22It's all the way home.
19:23Is that as good as you've ever done it?
19:25So it sounds...
19:28You hear the difference once it's all the way home.
19:30So it sort of went almost in, it then got a little bit tight.
19:33And then it went with its last little sort of...
19:36All the way in.
19:37Try a little bit of play in the middle there, which is perfect.
19:39That's it.
19:41Done a million of them.
19:42So that's it.
19:44Can I twiddle it?
19:45Yeah.
19:46Don't know why I want to, but I just want to twiddle it.
19:49Nice and smooth.
19:50Right, we're going to put the backing plate on now.
19:52Exactly that.
19:53That's it. So we've checked that we've got our little seal in there.
19:55We put our seals around here.
19:57Why is it like dark in colour?
19:58What is it?
19:59It's a different material?
20:01It's just a different material.
20:03Well, it's in fact, it's still steel, but it's...
20:06It's coated it.
20:07Exactly that.
20:08For reasons.
20:08Yes.
20:09Tell you the truth, that was a lot less difficult than I thought it would be.
20:14So now I'm all good.
20:15I don't need to worry at all.
20:16It's just thrash it.
20:17Then something else will fail.
20:21Or I'll crash it.
20:22Shouldn't say that.
20:23Right, so you're torquing it now.
20:28It's funny how you know these torque settings off by heart.
20:31Show us how many you've done.
20:33There we go.
20:34Perfect.
20:35Actually, while we've got the gearbox out,
20:37the condition's really good for a car that's over 20 years old.
20:41Yeah, it is in good shape.
20:42It's a good car.
20:44So next phase, Matt, is to fit a new light and flywheel.
20:49That's it.
20:49And while we're at it, we may as well fit the clutch.
20:52Yeah.
20:52First of all, let's go to the clutch,
20:54because I've been having this weird groaning noise in the car
20:57when I pull away sometimes once the engine's hot.
20:59I was wondering if it was the diff.
21:01I've got a Wavetrack LSD in it.
21:03I mean, it could be.
21:04It could also be.
21:04I mean, it's got a slightly noisy release bearing as well.
21:07So this is the clutch release bearing.
21:09Exactly that.
21:10So can you hear the bearings in there?
21:11Yeah.
21:11I've seen worse, to be fair.
21:13But they can get groany sometimes when you're just taking up drive
21:16once when the bearings get noisy.
21:17If you compare it to the new one, which is, it's all beautiful and silky smooth.
21:21Right.
21:22So it could be that.
21:23The clutch itself, how many miles do you reckon is left in that clutch?
21:26I mean, it's not looking that bad.
21:29We look for how close the rivets are.
21:31There was still plenty of miles left in that.
21:32But it's got a slightly noisy release bearing.
21:35It's all a bit rusty and a bit untidy in there.
21:38So we'll clean it all up and make it lovely.
21:40New flywheel.
21:41And have you seen the difference in the weight between the flywheels?
21:44Yeah.
21:44So basically, we've got the clutch from Design 911.
21:47So it's a great place to get all your 911 parts.
21:50And this is the big thing that I think is going to really change
21:52how the car feels to drive.
21:54This Asko Motorsports lightened flywheel.
21:57So let me just show you this.
21:58This is the standard flywheel for the car.
22:02It's called a dual mass flywheel.
22:04So it provides a dampening effect, doesn't it?
22:07Exactly right.
22:07As a result, it's really heavy.
22:09I mean, that is like, I can just about hold that out in front of me like that.
22:13Ah, it's really hurting my back.
22:14Now we have this lightweight flywheel, which is, I mean, look at that.
22:18I mean, that is, look at that.
22:23It's light as a feather.
22:23Let's try and do that with the other one.
22:25It's impossible.
22:26What's this?
22:26This feels like, is this 15?
22:28It's got to be.
22:29It's got to be 10 or 15, yeah.
22:31There's no way I can hold that out in front of me.
22:33It is, I just hurt my chest doing that.
22:37But it's a big difference.
22:38So the engine's going to react more quickly for your heel and toe,
22:43for blipping the throttle.
22:44And it makes them feel faster, especially as the revs climb.
22:47You just, you can really feel a lightweight flywheel.
22:49So you will get a bit more, a little bit of gearbox chatter.
22:52I'm so excited.
22:52You'll hear it a bit more and it's a little bit trickier to pull away
22:55because you've got less weight there.
22:58But it makes a nice difference.
22:59It's going to really work well with the other thing we're going to do in a bit,
23:02which is the gear shifter.
23:04We'll get the box fitted back in and then we'll do the shifter at the end.
23:07Okay, let's do it.
23:08Brilliant.
23:08Okay, let's do it.
23:17We have done the IMS bearing.
23:20We've done the brakes.
23:20We've put the new clutch and lightened flywheel in.
23:23And there is one last thing that we're doing now, which I'm very excited about.
23:27It's the short shift kit.
23:29So that is a factory 997 GT3 shifter.
23:33It's got metal internals, gives you a more precise shift.
23:36I think it's about 15% reduction on the standard 996 shifter.
23:40I think you've got the one that was in the car originally.
23:43So if we look at this, you'll see all the parts, apart from this, are plastic.
23:48Whereas on this, it's metal.
23:50And let me just have a feel.
23:52It does feel shorter, not too short, because I don't want it too short
23:56because there's more of a risk of money shifting then, isn't there?
23:59But that just feels like, oh, yes.
24:03I'm looking forward to enjoying that in combination with that lightened flywheel.
24:08Let's get this thing out of the way.
24:09Enjoying that in combination with that lightened flywheel.
24:12Let's get the centre console put back in.
24:14And then I suppose you're going to do a test drive in it, and then I can have a little go.
24:18Absolutely. That's it.
24:25Finally, then, the car is all back together.
24:28Everything's done.
24:29And...
24:31Feels good?
24:33Feels way better.
24:34But the important thing, start the engine.
24:37That's it. Let's see how it revs.
24:39And see if we got rid of that original, like, knocking, tapping sound
24:43that it occasionally did when I'd start it, which I originally bought it in for.
24:46So, let's try it.
24:51Do you know what? That sounds better.
24:53There's no, like, tapping sound or knocking.
24:55Sounds smooth.
24:56Really smooth.
24:58The noise is gone.
24:59Awesome. And let's just try this.
25:08Definitely more responsive.
25:10Really more responsive.
25:11It revs up quicker and drops quicker than it did before with that heavy flywheel.
25:15Looking forward to driving that.
25:23Wow. Listen, thank you very much, Matt, for doing all that work.
25:26My pleasure. Any time.
25:28Really, really, really good stuff.
25:30If you've got a Porsche 911 and you want it worked on by an expert,
25:33check out Matt Wren Works in Stevenage, OK?
25:36Link is in the description.
25:38Now, test drive.
25:40Three days later.
25:42This is the part of the video where I should be driving the car,
25:45telling you exactly how the upgrades have improved the way it drives.
25:48However, I've had a bit of an accident and did all this damage.
25:52So now, before I actually try out the mods and tell you what they're like,
25:56I'm going to have to get this fixed.
25:58This is Ed from Ed's Car Care.
26:01Look, it says on his top there.
26:02So, I've been chatting with Ed over Instagram for quite a while now,
26:06and I contacted him and said,
26:08can you sort out my Porsche, because I've made an error.
26:11So, Ed, how bad is it?
26:13It's quite bad. I mean, we've got some alignment issues,
26:17we've got a dent, and we've got quite some deep scratches here.
26:20OK, so I've actually knocked my bonnet out of alignment.
26:23Is it the bonnet or is it just the bumper?
26:25It's just the bumper.
26:26That's good news. So, you can fix all this, right?
26:29Yes, and while we're at it, there's not only one dent here,
26:33there's a couple of dents on this side, on the other side.
26:35So, I'll look after you. Ed, get to it.
26:38Two weeks later.
26:39Ed has brought my car back.
26:42Here he is.
26:44And what I'm going to do is hand him the camera,
26:48and he's going to get my reaction as I look around it, OK?
26:51So, look at it. It's insane.
26:55Ed has not only done the bumper,
26:58he's done everything else on the car.
26:59So, he's detailed it, he's polished it,
27:02he's got rid of whatever dents and dings were on it.
27:06It looks like new.
27:07Look at the wheels, look at the brake calipers.
27:10Anyone who says the 996 is ugly, just look at it from this angle.
27:14Now that Ed's seen to it.
27:16Then I want to show you this. Look, you got rid of the dent.
27:18It's amazing. You're only supposed to do the bumper.
27:22And that's not all. Look, let's go back around it.
27:24He's only gone and done the inside too.
27:26Look, the seats are like new.
27:28You know, sometimes, right?
27:29Sometimes what happens is a bad thing occurs,
27:32and you think, oh, that's just awful.
27:34But then a bad thing turns into a good thing,
27:36because if I hadn't damaged the car,
27:37I wouldn't have contacted Ed,
27:39and he wouldn't have transformed my 996 into this thing of beauty.
27:44Thank you, Ed. I love it.
27:46Now, you might have noticed there was something missing from my car,
27:49and it was the badge.
27:50See, it was old, so I've got this new one from Design 911.
27:54And to complete his work, Ed is now going to fit it.
27:57There you go.
27:59So, Ed, while you're doing that, can you tell me,
28:02what was the hardest thing to do on the car?
28:04The hardest part was the dent on the nearside rear quarter.
28:08It has some previous work, so I had to take my time with that one.
28:11It took me a few hours.
28:12Okay, and how about the bumper itself?
28:14The bumper is okay.
28:16Generally speaking, because it's had previous work,
28:18you have to just be gentle with it.
28:20You can't just chuck whatever you want,
28:21fill it up with filler and chuck some paint on it.
28:23You have to be quite delicate.
28:25And the inside, you went to tan on my interior.
28:27I didn't even expect you to do anything.
28:29I had some little bits on the dash where I'd stuck GoPros to the dash,
28:34and they'd lifted the leather a little bit away,
28:36so there's some annoying air bubbles.
28:37And you've got rid of those.
28:38Yeah, well, you asked.
28:39You did say.
28:41I suppose I did.
28:42Just in case, if you could.
28:44So I said, you know what, let me treat him.
28:46He deserves it.
28:48Well, that is a job well done.
28:52Let's just get an end shot of you next to the very shiny car you have created, Ed.
28:57So thank you very much, Ed, for sorting that out,
28:59fixing the bumper and making my car look better than ever before.
29:03So if you want your car to look better than ever before,
29:06then I've put a link to Ed in the description of this video.
29:10Go check him out.
29:12Finally, then, I can tell you what the changes have done to how my 996 feels to drive.
29:17The first thing is that weird noise I told you about at the beginning of the video has gone,
29:23which is good.
29:24I do have a new noise, and it's a slight clatter from that lightened flywheel.
29:28But it gives this car a raw and motorsporty feel,
29:31helps it seem a bit more GT3.
29:33And I like that.
29:34I especially like how it makes the engine rev so much more freely.
29:40And it combines beautifully with the GT3 short shifter,
29:43which is just glorious and precise.
29:46I absolutely adore it.
29:48And it makes this car just even more involving to drive,
29:52as do the braking upgrades.
29:54So the brakes work before.
29:56It's just that the initial bite was a bit soft,
29:59and there wasn't much feel through the pedal.
30:01Now, though, the bite is stronger,
30:04and those braided hoses, they really do give you more feedback through the pedal.
30:09So you can just control your braking better.
30:14All these upgrades work so well,
30:16and just make this car even better to drive.
30:19I love it.
30:20Also, the work that Ed's done to just beautify it makes me love it even more.
30:24It just feels like new to sit in,
30:26and then when I get out and look at it, it's so pleasing on the eye.
30:30Anyone who says the 996 is ugly is wrong.
30:33Anyhow, I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who's helped me with this video.
30:37So massive thanks to Matt at Renworks.
30:40He's been working on my car since I bought it in 2006.
30:44He's an absolute legend.
30:45If you've got a 911, go see him.
30:47Also, big thanks to Design 911 for sorting out all the parts for the car.
30:52I've had loads of parts from Design 911 over the years for this.
30:55Suspension upgrades, all that kind of stuff.
30:57They're the go-to place for all the bits for your Porsche 911.
31:01And, of course, huge thanks to EBC Brakes for sorting out the discs, the pads,
31:05and those braided hoses.
31:07I've also got to say thanks to Ed at Ed's Car Care.
31:10I was gutted when I damaged my car by driving the X5 into it,
31:15but it's actually worked out for the best
31:16because it's now even more lovely than it ever was before.
31:20And, of course, if you're buying a car such as this 911 996,
31:24or any used car for that matter,
31:26and you're a little bit worried about it breaking down or having problems,
31:30check out Warranty Wise.
31:31They'll give you the peace of mind to just get on and use and enjoy your car.
31:36And do you know what? That's exactly what I'm going to do now, so...
31:40And while I'm doing this, if you click on the pop-out banner
31:44that should be appearing in the top right-hand corner of the screen,
31:47you can go direct to Warranty Wise now
31:49and find out more about policy for your car.
31:52Plot twist. I'm back at Renworks.
31:56My car has broken.
31:59After just 400 miles, we've got a serious fault,
32:03and it's completely unrelated.

32:07Now, Matt is on holiday, so we have Sam Pope here to investigate.
32:12What's going on, Sam?

32:14Got a leak coming from your transmission area.

32:19We don't know at the moment.
32:20It's going to need some further investigation.

32:28The noise from the engine, it's nothing to do with that.
32:30It's a new fault.
32:32The gearbox is probably going to have to come out.
32:34There could be something broken inside.
32:35We don't know.
32:36I'll tell you what.
32:37Classic car ownership, it's a rollercoaster ride of emotion.
