00:00The theory is that this spot is too shallow for sharks.
00:19It's a seal equivalent of a paddling pool, a safe and sheltered spot where pups can learn
00:26to swim.
00:50This cove is the only place I can observe these seals beneath the waves, but we want
00:56to understand their lives away from the sheltered shallows.
01:01And that's what the deployment of these cameras is all about.
01:08Our camera testing seal has also been taking a dip.
01:15Time to see what the footage reveals.
01:18Heading down to sea.
01:23See how the way her shoulder blades are working.
01:29And she's about to jump into the water, and there she goes, into the water, look at that.
01:41As soon as she dives, the camera captures unexpected behaviour.
01:46Oh, look at that, look at that.
01:51She's rubbing against the rocks, on that green stuff.
01:58Wow, yeah, you can see it very clearly there.
02:08Yeah.
02:09And there she is, she's rubbing the side of her face and neck, and the other animals
02:14around her are doing the same thing.
02:17They're all doing it.
02:18Yeah.
02:19And you've never seen this before?
02:21No.
02:22I wouldn't have known.
02:23I mean, you see them offshore at the surface plain, and this is brand new stuff, I've never
02:28seen this before.
02:33Wow.
02:36John thinks the seals could be using the seaweed to clean their fur, brushing up against it
02:45to remove parasites.
