00:00No noisy touring car, no annoying film crews.
00:08Hey, come on Charlie, come on Charlie.
00:12Hey, we're on again.
00:15Had to happen, didn't it?
00:18No rest for the wicked.
00:20Crikey, has it actually been a month since those maniacs in the Autotrader British Touring Car Championship were swapping panels with each other?
00:29Well, apparently it has been, so time for me to recap.
00:35The last time the BTCC raced was Donington Park, way back on July the 30th, eons ago.
00:42Gabriele Tarquini took both poles, but threw it off in the sprint, cue for domination.
00:47Well, not quite.
00:49Ricard Rydell non-finished in the sprint and was only 6th in the feature, while Al Amenu mashed his Mondeo.
00:55Now that left Anthony Reid to take his first win of the year and the points lead, and then sit back and relax for a moment.
01:03I've quite enjoyed it. I mean, it's been good for my confidence to be leading the championship,
01:08and it's always a nice time of the year to speak to people when you're leading the points.
01:13The four weeks have certainly benefited myself.
01:16As a professional driver, you don't take a summer holiday anyway,
01:19because you're not quite sure who might be driving your car when you come back off that holiday.
01:23It's good to be around and be involved with the team.
01:26The team have been working very hard over the last four weeks to develop the engine and the aero package on the car,
01:31and it's certainly benefited us at the moment.
01:36The Ford boys are 1, 2, 3 in the points, but Vauxhall are still hanging tough to keep in touch.
01:42If there's a gap, Ivan Muller and Jason Theto will go for it.
01:45If there isn't a gap, why not go for it anyway?
01:50Ivan Muller had to fight every kid in the playground at Donington,
01:54and still only ended up with a pair of fourth places.
01:57But the Frenchman's never-say-die spirit says it ain't over till it's over.
02:02It's not over for sure. We still have three weekends, I mean six races,
02:07so it's 40 points for each race, so many things can happen.
02:12France hatches a place of pilgrimage for touring car fans after that miraculous move by Muller in 1999.
02:19But could he do it again?
02:21I don't think so. You know, one overtake like I made last year there,
02:25I don't think I will have a second opportunity like this.
02:28I can't believe somebody will do the same mistake twice.
02:32One thing about to shake up the order is the vexed question of dropped scores.
02:37You see, at the end of every season, each driver has to drop his four worst scores.
02:41So that means that being Mr. Consistency and scoring every time out,
02:45well, that might necessarily be the right way around things.
02:48But why bring this up now?
02:50Well, after these two races at Brands Hatch, there are precisely four races left.
02:55So this weekend is the driver's last chance to bag a really big haul of points
02:59before they start dropping scores for real.
03:02So who's got the most to lose?
03:12Jason Plate owes. Get it?
03:15Jason Plate owes on 123 points coming into Brands.
03:24But a car-destroying non-scoring weekend at Croft means that as things stand,
03:29he'd only dropped three points, putting him on 120.
03:35His teammate Muller's on 131 points.
03:42But three fat zeroes mean he'd only shed three points as well, putting him on 128.
03:50Rydell goes one better than Muller. He's on 139 points.
03:54But four of those cheeky zeroes means he doesn't drop a bean.
04:04Er, Alan, in your own time, mate.
04:07OK, Menu's on 149 points, but he's been pretty much win or bust.
04:20His three non-finishers mean he only dropped two points, putting him to 147.
04:29Not such a bad system, eh, Alan?
04:32I've got to say that it's working for me.
04:35I've got to say that it's working for me because I've had two non-finishers
04:40and a few bad scores, really, so I only have to drop two points.
04:46But now that we've come close to the end of the season,
04:49if I don't finish one of the races, then it doesn't look very good for me.
04:53So now I can't afford too many more mistakes or too many problems
04:57or too many Jason Plate hitting me.
04:59The real loser in this is Mr Consistency, Anthony Reid.
05:03He's on 156 now, but drops a whopping 17 points as things stand,
05:09thanks to carding so few zeroes.
05:11Dropping them now, he'd be just down to 139.
05:17As I said, this is the last weekend before the drop score system cuts in,
05:21so these drivers are going to be as desperate as they've ever been
05:24to come away with a pile of points.
05:26Now, let's have a look and see who's stolen a march on everybody else
05:29by grabbing the couple on offer for pole.
05:33Qualifying saw the return of a familiar name, Alfa Romeo,
05:37and an unfamiliar one.
05:40We've got the Alfa Romeo's first time back in the BTCC,
05:43so that's a good start, and also I think I've made history now
05:46on this weekend, I'm the youngest ever touring car driver,
05:4818, 254 days or something like that.
05:51Ferrier was joined by Gavin Piper in a pair of Class B 156s,
05:56Italian red, of course.
05:59Back at the sharp end, James Thompson's Honda took second
06:02for the feature.
06:09But his team-mate Tom Christensen went one better.
06:16Not to be outdone, Ford did the same in the one shot for the sprint.
06:23Anthony Reid took second on the grid.
06:26Good time.
06:27But the back-slapping proved a little premature
06:29when Ricard Riedel took his eighth pole,
06:32an eighth bonus point of the season.
06:34That's double what anyone else has managed so far.
06:44Pole position is particularly important at Brands Hatch
06:47on the Indy circuit, because being so short,
06:49overtaking is not that easy.
06:51One of the best places, in fact, to make up a spot or two
06:54on the grid is during the pit stop in the long race.
06:57Now, the pit stop, critically, starts right here, doesn't it, Matt?
07:00It's so important to get in fast.
07:02Sure, but where Brands differs to a lot of the circuits
07:04is the entry is so tight and you're coming in really hot,
07:07sort of maybe 100 miles an hour.
07:09Standing on the brakes and you've got this really tight S-bend
07:12you've got to come through in first gear,
07:14and then you're accelerating out of there
07:16trying to make sure you've got the 64km limit.
07:18If I get nicked for speeding in the pit lane,
07:20it's my first excuse to the team.
07:22Obviously, you want to maximise your speed down the pit lane
07:25because it's a good opportunity.
07:27You can make up as much time going down the pit lane and exiting
07:31as you can in the actual stop itself, so that's a really critical part.
07:34I suppose I should poke fun at you.
07:36One of the important things, I suppose, is to actually come in
07:38for your pit stop when you're supposed to.
07:40And stop at the right garage, mate.
07:42OK, well, now we've got both of those things covered,
07:44we get to the other end.
07:46Getting out of this pit lane is particularly tricky.
07:48Very different to a lot of circuits,
07:50because at a lot of circuits you rejoin halfway down a straight.
07:53You're exiting the pit lane in the braking area
07:55for pad a corner, the first corner.
07:57So as long as you get in front of them, you've got the corner.
08:00And it can get a bit physical at times,
08:03but you just muscle your way out there.
08:05But it's space for good racing.
08:07Yeah, it is really hairy, and I guess it's a lot worse again
08:10because you've got this imbalance with the cold and the hot tyres.
08:13If you change left-hand tyres,
08:15it's the most ill-handling thing you can possibly...
08:17You're driving up the pit lane like this.
08:19Like they've fitted the wrong size digger truck tyres
08:23or something like that. It's horrendous.
08:25My car do it, I think.
08:31OK, time for another one about technical challenges.
08:34Just how big a disadvantage is it
08:36trying to get off the line here carrying 40 kilos of success ballast?
08:39Well, our two Ford pilots, Rydell and Reid, are about to demonstrate.
08:43Both are on the front row of the grid.
08:45Anthony Reid in position 2 is carrying the full 40 kilos of success ballast
08:49because Anthony did so well last time out at Donington.
08:52But on the other hand, Ricard Rydell, his team-mate in pole position,
08:55carries no ballast because he had such an appalling weekend.
08:58But this isn't just as simple as it looks
09:00because, remember, pole position here at Brands is a little bit uphill.
09:03In fact, from the driver's point of view,
09:05it looks more like the north face of the Eiger.
09:07So being in pole isn't such a great advantage.
09:10And one other thing to confuse the mix,
09:12Alain Meunier, who drives the other Ford,
09:14he carries no ballast as well, and he's way back in 7th.
09:17Thank you, Charlie.
09:18Well, conundrums are not part of my speciality subject.
09:21But nonetheless, we've got those two Fords
09:23on the front row, Ricard Rydell in pole position
09:26and championship leader Anthony Reid alongside him.
09:28But maybe the performance of qualifying
09:30was independent Matt Neil on row 2 alongside Tom Christensen.
09:33The two Vauxhalls of Muller and Plato on row 3,
09:36and then a disappointing Meunier and James Thompson on row 4.
09:40Tarquini, a real star at Donington,
09:42with his win in row 5 with Vincent Rademacher.
09:44And then it's the first of Class B
09:46with Roy Kennan and James Cairn as Honda.
09:48Morrison and newcomer Piper in the glorious Alfa Romeo on row 7,
09:52and a second Alfa Romeo for Tom Ferrier and Lehmann as Honda.
09:56Norton and James make up row 9,
09:58and finally Robert Collard makes up the 19-car field.
10:01Gramps are up, ready for a start by Dillon, the foreground,
10:04and he's away. Oh, look, Reid is bogged down.
10:06Reid, a terrible start for him.
10:08Straight through the middle, Tom Christensen in the Honda.
10:10An astounding start for him, like a dart,
10:12straight up into second position.
10:14Matt Neil in third.
10:16To a rest around, down through Paddock, on board with Plato.
10:18That's Muller, his teammate, ahead of us.
10:21Coming up into the hairpin for the first time.
10:23Reid, Reid to the left of us, and Reid is off.
10:25Look as though he reversed off the track.
10:27Has he caught it? Yes, he has, on board with Plato.
10:29Maybe some contact there.
10:30Now down to bottom bin for the first time.
10:32Plato having a look down the inside.
10:34Can't do it.
10:36Down to bottom straight, Anthony Reid,
10:38a terrible start for him,
10:39and now he's got to work his way back through the field.
10:41Anthony Reid had all opportunities,
10:43the best part of the track, to get into Paddock.
10:45He'll bend first, he gets in fourth.
10:47Matt Neil in third position there,
10:49right behind Christensen, having a big moment through.
10:52Clearways corner, the back of the car steps out,
10:54but he caught it in time, and down across the strike.
10:58Freidel, Christensen and Neil,
11:00you can see them in the foreground.
11:02Neil looks to be challenging, then it's Muller,
