00:00Hi guys, Chris here, we're at the Car Expert Test Track Queensland Raceway today, and we
00:04are testing the BMW M8 Competition.
00:07This thing is an absolute weapon, 460kW, 750Nm of torque, it's going to be pretty exciting
00:13around the track, I can't wait to see what sort of numbers it will do.
00:19Alright, initial impressions, let's have a look at this on the outlap.
00:26Steering position is really good, super comfortable, I really like how low I can get, visibility
00:31doesn't seem like a big problem at all.
00:34I really like being down low and sitting back, angled back a bit, that's sort of a race car
00:38feel for me, I don't want to be too high and feel like I'm on top of the car.
00:42Steering wheel feels a little bit big, I'd rather a slightly smaller wheel, just gives
00:46me a little bit more feel, a little bit more control, I just feel like I don't have a great
00:49grip on it.
00:50But I do love the M1 and M2 red buttons on the wheel, they look awesome, and it's great
00:55to be able to choose what sort of settings you can add and easy select them, so sort
00:58of preset everything, you can choose traction control, on and off, which sports suspension
01:03setting or engine setting and you can pre-map all that.
01:07Steering feedback there is a little bit light, it'll be interesting to see at speed how that
01:12responds, just like a little bit more weight in the wheel normally.
01:16The car's also pretty heavy, 2.3 tonne basically, so that's going to take some stopping at the
01:23end of the straight, especially when a car does 0-100 in 3.2, so at the end of the straight
01:27here we're going to be moving.
01:28I had a few attempts to get the best 0-100 time that I could, in the end I only managed
01:333.8 seconds, which is a little bit disappointing, but it was a really hot day and the track
01:37was a bit dirty, so I'm sure that affected the result.
01:41Start to build up the speed a bit now, feels pretty stable, the platform feels good, you
01:47can feel the weight over there on the outside, but not too bad, but that engine is solid.
01:54Steering's actually pretty nice, even though it's light, I get a good feeling of precision
01:58so I can sort of choose where I want to be on the track and that's the most important
02:01thing.
02:02Let's test these brakes, pretty solid but you do notice the weight just not quite pulling
02:10up.
02:11Alright, let's try a hot lap.
02:14Good exit here, use the all-wheel drive off the corner, even the traction control's coming
02:20on then, let's see how this goes.
03:14Alright, so finally got a decent lap in at the end, it was actually pretty hard work,
03:33it's a hot afternoon here at Queensland Raceway so I'm sure that affected the time a bit.
03:38We got down to a 57.3, I think on a cold morning this car would definitely be quicker
03:44but hot afternoon you lose some time for sure.
03:48It was a handful but pretty impressive engine-wise, performance-wise, I had to be quite aggressive
03:54with the car but a few times I lost the rear as well and struggled to maintain stability.
04:00Just being such a big heavy car I'd say is my biggest criticism and that's part of the
04:03package, that's the sort of vehicle it is, it's not an entirely track-focused race car,
04:08it's more of a grand touring car and it ticks those boxes but I have to say for a big car,
04:15mid-corner stability was actually really good so BMW have nailed that part of it.
04:20Engine, huge power coming off the last turn here, it's almost like you've got a slight
04:25four-wheel drift which is pretty cool.
04:28Braking is great, super consistent but just difficult to really nail, especially down
04:33the main straight into turn one, to have the confidence to know exactly where the car was
04:37going to end up.
04:38I was a little bit nervous each time, just couldn't quite place the car exactly where
04:43I wanted and I guess just with that 2,300 kilograms of energy going forward it was hard
04:49to place it exactly where I wanted and I just sometimes got a little bit of push, sometimes
04:53had a little bit of oversteer and that just made it a little bit difficult to get a perfect lap.
04:58I think there's a bit more time in it but on a colder day it would definitely be a quicker car,
05:03the colder air would help the tyres, help the turbos, build a bit more power as well
05:08and funny I say that, even though it's got 460 kilowatts, because the traction is so
05:13good with the all-wheel drive system, the xDrive, it could actually handle more power
05:18and even a bit more torque.
05:20Everything else, no complaints, the gear shifts were super smooth and quick, pedal was nice
05:25and firm, overall a pretty impressive car but a tough thing to get around a circuit
05:31that's for sure.
05:34So there you go, the BMW M8 Competition, that is a beast of a car and a handful on the track,
05:40wasn't easy to get a lap time out of there but 57.3 in the end is not bad, on a cooler
05:45day you're going to see a quicker time.
05:47To get the most out of this car you've got to be pretty careful, there's a lot of weight
05:50going around there so over committing to corners is only going to cause trouble so be careful
05:54there, you've got the all-wheel drive system so use that, use the maximum of that when
05:58you exit into the corner, use the grip, use the traction and then use that awesome engine,
06:03V8, twin turbo off the corner, that's where your time is, get the car turned and fire
06:07it out of the corners, it's a big car so be patient.
