Hey everone. Once again. I am sorry that it took us so long to get through this Let's Play. While we did expect a lot of episodes of Let's Play Destiny, it should not have taken more than ayear to get through 50 of them. None the less, the video review of Destiny is done. We can close the book on this series for now. We may come back to it for on the Playstation 4 to do the final expansion. That remains to be seen. For now,. here is my video review of Destiny. This wound up being longer than I expected it to be, but it was a big game. I had a lot to say. Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed.

00:00Hey everyone, it's the Doomdog. It's been quite the journey, hasn't it? We started Let's Play
00:06Destiny over a year ago, and it took 50 episodes and close to 24 hours of playtime to finish it.
00:15I admit, it took too long to get through it all. For that, I am sorry. Well, it is finally done
00:23now. We finally played through Destiny and its expansions. Well, we played through everything
00:29available on the Playstation 3 anyway. The final expansion is exclusive to the Playstation 4 and
00:35Xbox One. So, it will not be covered in this video. Any ways to say Bungie had a good run
00:42during the 6th and 7th generation would be a vast understatement. I have already covered
00:48their Halo games on this channel if you are interested. After the release of Reach,
00:55Bungie left Halo behind and became an independent studio for the first time in a long time,
01:01allowing them to develop on non-Microsoft platforms for the first time since Microsoft
01:08bought the company in 2001. This, of course, meant that they would develop for Playstation hardware.
01:16An interesting historical note is that this is not the first time Bungie had done this,
01:21as they did have a game called Oni on the Playstation 2 early in 2001. However, this
01:28is the first time they would develop for Sony in more than a decade, and it was their first
01:33crack at the Playstation 3 and then upcoming Playstation 4. The Playstation 3 is notoriously
01:40difficult to develop for thanks to the unique architecture of its processor, and it led to a
01:47lot of games on the console both looking and running worse than the technically inferior
01:54Xbox 360 hardware. For our let's play, we elected to play the Playstation 3 version of the game.
02:00As such, part of this review will be about that version in specific. This is also why there is no
02:10gameplay of the Rise of Iron expansion pack for the game. It did not come to the Playstation 3
02:17and Xbox 360 versions of the game, it is exclusive to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions.
02:23Instead, we might get to that expansion someday that remains to be seen,
02:30but we chose the Playstation 3 version thanks to its free online play.
02:36Bungie had a great working relationship with Sony straight out of the gate.
02:40When Destiny was announced at E3, they announced that the Playstation 3 version of the game would
02:45be getting exclusive items and pre-order bonuses that would not be available on the Xbox 360
02:52version of the game. It was surreal at the time to see Bungie representatives on Sony's stage,
02:59but it did bode well for the Playstation 3 version of the game.
03:04How did they do at their first and only outing on Sony's 7th gen hardware? Did they succumb to the
03:12usual growing pains of developing for the console, or did they hit a home run straight out of the
03:18gate? Join me as we take a look at Destiny for the Playstation 3 and find out. Destiny is a
03:24first-person shooter as you would expect from Bungie, but it is not your typical single-player
03:29affair like their previous works Halo and Marathon. Instead, it is a co-op multiplayer experience
03:38where you will either gather in parties with friends from your friends list, or you will meet
03:45other players at a central hub and party up there. From there, you will be given quests by a number
03:52of NPCs in the hub, and these will see you flying to a variety of locations on a variety of planets
04:02to complete said quests. Aside from teamwork, the big focus is on loot drops. In this sense,
04:12it almost works like a multiplayer-only Borderlands. It effectively invented a new
04:18brand of looter shooter, and pretty much invented the live service model. The live service model
04:25has been contentious in the industry for years now for a lot of reasons, and we have seen high
04:32profile failures. Numerous companies have chased that Destiny money, and many have fallen on their
04:39faces in their attempt. We, however, were very late to the party with this game starting it
04:47years into its sequel's many expansions. We missed when this game was getting regular updates by a
04:55long shot. I cannot tell you about how that aspect of the game went. I can only grade it as it stands
05:05now where the servers are being maintained. Let's take a closer look. In Destiny, there is a giant
05:13mysterious sphere known as the Traveler. It hangs out near Earth's moon, where the last human city
05:20currently resides. Among other things, the Traveler terraforms planets. It has done so
05:27to Mars, Venus, and the Moon, allowing humanity to expand to those planets and build there. Aside
05:36from the Moon, the cities built there are now abandoned. It is chased by an ancient evil being
05:43known simply as the Darkness. They have been at war long, long before the game actually starts,
05:52and there was some major conflict that wiped out life on Earth and other planets humanity spread
05:59to, leaving just the safe haven on the Moon itself below the Traveler itself. The game begins
06:08when a small floating robot known as a Ghost resurrects a long dead warrior in what was once
06:13Russia. This is the main character known as a Guardian. Guardians are humans resurrected by
06:20Ghosts that contain the power of the Traveler's light. They can use the power of light to fight
06:26back against the Darkness. After fighting your way through a group of enemies called the Fallen,
06:32you eventually find a small working ship in the junkyard nearby where you resurrected,
06:40and you use that ship to fly up to the Moon and the last remaining human city. In the city,
06:48there are numerous NPC characters that you can run around back and forth to. You will talk to them
06:54and advance the plot to get new quests to complete. You can also choose one of a number of different
07:03factions to do quests for as well. We elected to not do this, instead choosing to stick to the main
07:09path through the story and its expansions. Instances where we were not sure what we needed to do
07:18were rare, and they were mostly relegated to patrol missions. Having said that, there are
07:23a lot of problems with this game's storytelling. Cutscenes are sparse throughout the main game
07:28and the first expansion, The Dark Below. The game only really started getting more substantial
07:35cutscenes with the second expansion, House of Wolves, and it really only feels like proper
07:41Bungie storytelling when we reach the final of the 7th gen expansions, The Taken King.
07:48This is a major problem for the game because it leads to it feeling like there is little to no
07:56actual story throughout most of the game's runtime. The problem we kept running into with this game
08:02and its story is that we had no clue what was going on. Based off my research from reviews,
08:08back in the day when this game and its expansions came out, this seemed to be a pretty common
08:13sentiment among players. The game is fun, but I have no idea what is going on.
08:20It goes without saying that this is disappointing coming from Bungie, who had been known for their
08:27storytelling even dating back as far as the Marathon games on Mac in the 90s. Throughout
08:34your journey, you will frequently see pop-ups saying you unlocked something called Grimoire
08:41Cards, and it will tell you to go to Bungie's website to find out what they are and what they
08:48say. I gather that a lot of the world's lore was told through these cards, and that presents
08:56a major problem. Your lore should be in the game. It should not require you to go to a website
09:03outside of the game to get to that lore. If nothing else, at least have a codex like Mass
09:10Effect does that explains stuff. I did try to go to Bungie's website for the Grimoire Cards,
09:16and I found it was all about Destiny 2. I looked into this, and I gather that the
09:22cards are not on Bungie's site anymore, making access to this essentially impossible.
09:29Please do correct me if I am off base on this one. I could be wrong, but if I'm not,
09:35this is really fucking stupid. Why would you not have all this accessible to the player now?
09:43That just cuts them off from tons of lore for this game, and makes players resort to things
09:48like YouTube videos explaining it all. At the end of the day, I have no clue what was going on the
09:53vast majority of the time. Both Dalton and I discussed this at numerous points throughout
09:59our playthrough of it. Neither one of us knew what we were doing or why we were doing it most
10:05of the time. The storytelling in this game just plain sucks, and this is Bungie. They are capable
10:12of telling great stories. I heaped a lot of praise at Halo 2, for example, for its excellent story
10:19and arc for the Arbiter as a character. In this aspect, Destiny was a big disappointment.
10:26Graphically, however, the game is a very different story. This game is gorgeous,
10:31plain and simple. I can only assume that Sony themselves helped Bungie develop for the PS3,
10:39or that Bungie had practiced developing for the console prior to this game's release or something,
10:46because none of the usual stumbling blocks associated with learning to work with the
10:50PS3 are here. This game is absolutely beautiful, and I would go as far as to say it is one of the
10:57best looking games on 7th gen hardware in general. What impresses me the most about this game is
11:06the framerate. It does run at 30fps, as you would come to expect from the 7th gen,
11:12but it is a silky smooth 30fps. Unlike fucking most of the games from this generation, let's be
11:19real here, it does not struggle to reach 30. It does not have any problems maintaining it.
11:26The game is about as buttery smooth as you can get for 30fps. Destiny is well optimized on Sony's
11:35hardware. It does run at 720p, which is a low resolution by today's standards. If you go back
11:44to the 7th gen though, that is to be expected. Even Xbox 360 games usually internally ran at a
11:51resolution of 720p that was upscaled to 1080p. Bungie has long had a knack for excellent art
11:59design. That is something they always got right with the Halo games, and Destiny is no different.
12:07This game isn't just gorgeous on a technical level, it is beautiful on an artistic one as well.
12:14This is the kind of game that anytime you visit a new area you will want to do some exploring
12:22just to see the world around you simply because it is beautiful to look at. It draws you into
12:30its world with its strong art design like Halo did. This however is a bit of a double edged sword.
12:37The world design is so beautiful and so interesting that I want to know more about it.
12:43It makes me more interested in what the lore and story has to offer,
12:49and this presents a major problem with the game. As previously discussed, this game sucks at
12:57dishing out both its story and its lore. I wish it was better at this because as it stands,
13:05it can feel like a gorgeous world without much depth behind it. That is entirely the game's fault
13:13too. There is lore to it, but the game won't give it to you. You have to go searching for it.
13:21All in all though, Destiny is a complete package. I went into this version of the game expecting a
13:28much pared back version of the game with framerate problems. I did not really get that.
13:35It has a lower resolution, sure, but the game is amazing on a technical level with gorgeous art
13:42design and a rock solid framerate. The next gen version of this game does look better,
13:48but the 7th gen version is by no means an afterthought as cross gen games often are.
13:57This game looks great and runs well. Another thing that Bungie is quite good at is sound design.
14:04I have my fair share of criticisms with the sound design for their guns in their games before Reach,
14:11but aside from that, they always had good audio design and this game is no different.
14:18The sound design here is just as good as you would expect from Bungie. The environmental ambience is
14:26beautiful. The guns sound plenty powerful. The Taken make all kinds of unsettling noises
14:34when they enter areas and come after you. Everything sounds great. The voice acting
14:42is pretty sparse throughout much of the main game and first expansion as cutscenes are few and far
14:47between. There is much more with the House of Wolves and Taken King expansions. During these
14:54cutscenes, the voice work is up to the standard you would expect from Bungie games which is to
15:00say that it is great. Each actor voices their character well. With high profile voices such
15:07as Peter Dinklage voicing the Ghost, Lance Reddick voicing Commander Zavala, and Nathan Fillion
15:14voicing Cayde-6, you would expect no less. This is an excellent cast and they all put in a great
15:21performance. Music is another thing that Bungie is well known for. The Halo games have some of the
15:29best and most beloved soundtracks in all of gaming. Marty O'Donnell and Michael Salvatore
15:35both did excellent work for this franchise and they both returned to compose music for this game
15:42as well. As you would expect, this means that the music is high quality, beautiful, and top-notch.
15:49These two never turn in a bad performance where soundtracks are concerned and they knock it out
15:54of the park here as well. Destiny's music is just as good as you would expect. It is a great listen,
16:01whether you are playing the game or not. All in all, this game, like Reach before it,
16:08is the whole package as far as sound design goes. The environmental sounds and gun sounds are up to
16:15the same high standards of Reach. The voice cast employs some big-name actors who all turn in great
16:22performances and the music is just as good as it has ever been. This game sounds great. Bungie set
16:30a high bar with Halo and they reached it with Destiny. I would expect nothing less from them
16:37and they delivered. As previously stated, Destiny is a first-person shooter. On the most basic level,
16:44it is a standard affair. You run and jump around maps using a variety of weapons to shoot bad guys.
16:51You have grenades and you can punch enemies for a melee attack. There are a variety of
16:55locales that you will travel back and forth between and there are multiple different enemy
17:01types that you will engage with as you dive further and further into the game. On a surface level,
17:08it is exactly what you expect. In typical Bungie fashion, it all works great and feels right.
17:15It is when you dig a little deeper that it gets a bit more interesting.
17:21The first thing you will do in Destiny is choose a class of character that you want to play.
17:27You have three options to choose from, the Hunter, the Titan, and the Warlock. While the core of the
17:33gameplay will still be running, jumping, and shooting, which class you choose of course
17:39determines your playstyle at least to some extent. Each class has different special abilities. For
17:47example, I personally chose to play as a Titan and Dalton chose a Hunter. Let's talk about them.
17:55Titan is the one that I have experience with. It is essentially the warrior of the group.
18:02They deal heavy damage with their guns and they tank more than the other classes.
18:09They are to this series what the Spartans are to Halo. They are the simplest and most easy to
18:17understand class of the bunch. You pick your weapon and you deal as much damage as you can.
18:23You punch enemies out of existence and you throw grenades. The Hunter was Dalton's class of choice.
18:29Hunters are the stealth class of the group. They focus on longer range combat with sniper rifles
18:37and sneak attacking enemies. Remember Luger from Killzone? Yeah, that is basically what this class
18:43is. You will primarily stick behind others in the group and pick enemies off with a sniper rifle.
18:48You will deal heavy damage, but you will have a slower rate of fire. The final class is the
18:54Warlock. I do not have experience with this class and it was just Dalton and I throughout
19:01the entire playthrough of this. We never had a Warlock in our party. My experience with this
19:06class is severely limited as such, but this is essentially the mage of the group. They use the
19:12light of the Traveler to cast spells to damage enemies. They are less powerful and tanky than
19:20the Titan and they are not stealthy as the Hunter. The three classes wind up complementing
19:26each other just as much as they have since these three archetypes were in Diablo 1 back in the mid
19:3390s. Once you have picked your class and jumped to the game proper, one of the first things that
19:39you'll notice is that killing enemies nets you experience points. You will level up as you gain
19:47experience and you will become more powerful as you level up. You will unlock new power-ups,
19:56abilities, and subclasses as you level up. That's right, in many ways this game is an RPG complete
20:03with character classes, parties, and leveling. This comes complete with the Diablo-style loot
20:10system where you will kill enemies and pick up items that they drop. Some of them will be
20:16available to you right away, but others will need to be identified. You will need to take these back
20:23to the hub where certain NPCs will identify items for you. This game has its own version of Deckard
20:30Cain. In many ways it is an online loot fest RPG just like Diablo before it. As you would expect,
20:37you will collect weapons and gear to swap out what you're currently using and wearing and make your
20:43guardian more powerful. In this sense, the Hunter loot has the exact same addictive quality that
20:49kept me playing Diablo 1 and 2 for so long years ago. It was great back then and it is great here.
20:57It hands out loot at a good pace and you will frequently be upgrading your guardians.
21:03You even have a stash that you can use to put items for later use if you have something that
21:08you wish to hang on to. The hub area also has numerous NPCs that you will run around and talk
21:17to and they will give you different quests to accomplish as you dig deeper and deeper into the
21:24game. Each class has its own specific NPC character that you will report to for class-specific quests,
21:33but all the characters will give you quests to complete over the course of your journey.
21:38I keep making this comparison, but think of it like towns in Diablo where you get main quests
21:43and side quests to complete over the course of your journey. When you get out on the field fighting
21:48enemies is where the real fun begins however. Pair up with your friends or random strangers
21:56if you so choose and go take on enemies on various planets that you come across
22:03and complete quests. The movement out on the battlefield feels fast, fun, and fluid. Landing
22:10a super high double jump feels satisfying as hell every single time you do it. Running has a good
22:18sense of speed when you are booking it and the slide mechanic is always a joy to pull off.
22:23Transitioning between these as you shoot enemies is always satisfying. At the core of every good
22:32FPS is its gunplay and this is a Bungie game. You expect them to nail that right? Fortunately,
22:39and to no one's surprise, they absolutely do. Bungie's wonderfully implemented aim assist
22:46never feels too heavy. It always feels just right and popping enemies in the head
22:53with a well placed shot feels just right. The weapons are fun as hell to fire and different
22:59types of weapons are always a joy to experiment with. In Destiny, you will always have three
23:05weapon types on you at all times. Your main weapon which might be a submachine gun, a revolver,
23:12rifle of some kind, your sub weapon that I usually reserve for a good shotgun,
23:22and your heavy weapon where you might have a machine gun or a rocket launcher to deal
23:29heavy damage to enemies when fired. You pick and choose what weapons you want to carry
23:36in each slot based on what loot you find as you play, but you never have more than three weapons.
23:44Switching between your main and sub weapon is quick and easy with a simple press of the button.
23:50Pulling out your heavy weapon, however, is not just hitting the switch button twice,
23:58as you might expect. You have to hold down the switch weapons button to do it. I kind of like
24:05this though because it makes it harder to accidentally pull your heavy weapon out because
24:12you press the button to switch weapons too quickly. This prevents you from wasting its
24:18precious ammo. At times, you will need to travel long distances across the map
24:24to get where you need to go. For this, you have a fast moving single seated vehicle called a sparrow.
24:33It is essentially a hover bike and it has a great sense of speed that makes it fun to ride
24:40when you do pull it out. You will need to hop off of it to engage in combat, but it makes
24:48zipping around the battlefield and moving from location to location a lot of fun. I love this
24:54thing. I love pulling it out and flying across the battlefield on it. I wish I could pull out
25:00something like a sidearm and shoot enemies as I drive by them. That would make it even better.
25:07The different planets provide a number of different environments for you to fight through,
25:14giving the game plenty of variety. Beyond this, it has numerous dungeons that you will visit and
25:20explore. All of these are gorgeous and it is likely to inspire you to stop and take your time
25:28just to look around at all the wonderful art design that Bungie has put into this world.
25:34The game has an excellent sense of exploration. You will have a variety of abilities that you
25:40will use on the battlefield. For the titan, early on, this is a temporary light gun that you will
25:48unlock for a few shots where each single shot basically one shots any non-boss enemy. Later on,
25:56I unlocked a jump attack ground pound that did a large amount of damage to any enemies nearby
26:05where I used the move. When you land these properly and deal a ton of damage or take out
26:12multiple enemies in one go, it is infinitely satisfying and so much fun just to pull off.
26:21This always feels amazing no matter how many times I do it. There are things that you can do in
26:25Destiny that we did not do such as reaching level 40 and the in-game raid content. We were in this
26:33to play through the story so I cannot really tell you what that experience is like. For the roughly
26:3824 hours of this game that we did play to get through the story content, however, this game
26:46was an absolute blast. Frustrations with the story aside, I had a hell of a lot of fun playing
26:54through this game with Dalton and I am not opposed to coming back to doing it at some point
27:01on the PlayStation 4 to finish off the final expansion. Destiny is an absolute blast to play
27:08with friends. I do not know where to put this but we chose to play the PlayStation 3 version of
27:13Destiny because it is the only platform where you do not have to pay a monthly fee to play it online.
27:21For the time being, you can still buy the expansion packs for the game as we did but Sony does not
27:29make it easy on you. You will need to use your PlayStation 4 or 5 to put money in your wallet
27:37before you can spend it on the PlayStation 3. There is no way to just do this from the PlayStation 3.
27:46It is stupid. I hate it. It is not a knock against Destiny itself. It is a knock against
27:53Sony and what they have done to the PlayStation 3 store. As for replay value, I think it is safe
27:59to say that Destiny has a lot of it. This is a multiplayer game. While you can do a lot of
28:05missions by yourself, it is much more fun to team up with your friends and take them on.
28:13The loot system is addictive and there is plenty of stuff to do in the game that we did not even
28:19touch on. Even without touching in-game raids, Destiny kept us busy for 24 hours. We did not
28:26even do every mission we were given as there were a few that required more than two people to do.
28:35There is plenty here to keep you coming back.
