00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown, this bank holiday Friday.
00:35And if that means you're watching Countdown in the afternoon
00:38on your sofa on a day of the working week for the first time in ages,
00:42then you're especially welcomed.
00:44A long weekend, fantasy weekend.
00:47Yourself, Dan De Cleese and me, where are we going?
00:51Where would be the perfect three-, four-day trip?
00:53Oh, well, I went to Sofia at the start of the year.
00:56Have you ever been to Sofia? No.
00:58Capital of Bulgaria. I enjoyed it. I'd go back.
01:01We found some great vegan places. I'll take you. You'll love it.
01:04I'm going to say that's great. Yes, let's do that.
01:07I've said it before, but I'm taking both of you to Tenerife
01:10cos it's about a four-and-a-half-hour flight.
01:12We're going to stay down in the south
01:14and we're just going to get matching bikinis
01:17and we're going to go to Siam Park, the best water park in the world.
01:20Oh, brilliant. We're going to laze in the Mai Tai River,
01:24we're going to ride the snake together
01:26and then we'll go back to just one hotel room,
01:28the three of us at night, we'll get our onesies on
01:31and we'll play Scrabble till the sun comes up.
01:33You know what? I'm in. I'm in.
01:35It's on you, is it? That'll be fun. Let's go.
01:37Listen, if you would both go, I would pay for that.
01:40I'm in, I'm in. Anything to get away from the trip.
01:43Well, listen, let's get the choice, right?
01:45You've got Tenerife or you've got Sofia.
01:48Where are we going, Susie Dent?
01:50It has to be Tenerife, sorry, Rach.
01:52Just cos Colin's paying. Yeah, yeah, of course.
01:54That's the key, tight to the last, you two.
01:56I've never seen them buy a drink, let me tell you.
01:58It don't take long to add up how much money they've spent on rounds,
02:01that's for sure.
02:02Well, 15 rounds today.
02:04Susie, you'll make sure all the I's are dotted and the T's crossed
02:07and look who's beside you, final time this week.
02:09Brilliant to have Crammy back, the gyro arrow, Steve Cram!
02:16And we have yet another new champion
02:19in what has been a bizarre Series 87.
02:22Greg Pearce is back with us. How are you, mate?
02:25Very well. Well dressed again. Thank you.
02:27Beautiful, I like to see you making the effort,
02:29you're absolutely putting me to shame.
02:31Right, for now, concentrate on nothing other than letters and numbers
02:35cos I think you'll have a challenge today.
02:37Jay Patel is with us from Ryslip in London,
02:40near the end of the Metropolitan line. How are you?
02:42Hello, Graham, well, thank you. Nice to have you here.
02:45You brought your mum, is that mum? Hello, Mum.
02:47I'm my fiancée, yeah. And your fiancée, which one's which?
02:51I'm a short.
02:53Jay, you can learn a lot from me, right? You're only 28.
02:56You learn to charm.
02:58You've done something, like, this is unbelievable.
03:01So you've lost 30kg in seven months.
03:06Now, I had to work this out cos to me, I'm like, what does that weigh?
03:09It's over four and a half stone! Yeah, I know.
03:12Do you look, when you look in the mirror now,
03:15do you look younger now than you did seven months ago?
03:18I don't see the years drop off, let alone the weight.
03:20Yeah, I mean, even getting ready this morning,
03:23I looked in the mirror and I was like,
03:25I look like a completely different person. Yeah.
03:27So, yeah. If I looked like you,
03:29I'd spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, Jay.
03:31Too personal. Let's swiftly move on.
03:33Jay and Greg, good luck.
03:37Right, Greg, let's do it. Hello, Rachel.
03:39Hi, Greg. Can I start with a consonant, please?
03:41Thank you. Start today with R.
03:44Can I have a vowel, please?
03:47Can I have a consonant, please?
03:51A consonant.
03:56Vowel.
04:01Consonant.

04:46MUSIC PLAYS
04:54And that's time. Greg?
04:56Seven, please. Talk to me, Jay.
04:58Seven. Yeah, the seven, Greg.
05:00Marys. Marys. And Jay?
05:02Smarter. Smarter.
05:04I can't believe the guy that's just got engaged didn't pick Marys.
05:08But that'll still do.
05:10That'll still do, yeah.
05:11Seven points each, really strong start.
05:13To Dictionary Corner.
05:15Yeah, there is an eight, which is trailers.
05:18Very good indeed. Seven points each.
05:20More letters, Jay.
05:22Hello, Rachel. Hi, Jay.
05:24Consonant, please. Thank you.
05:26S. Vowel.
05:29O. Consonant.
05:31H. Consonant.
05:34P. Vowel.
05:38E. Consonant.
05:41S. Vowel.
05:45A.
05:47Consonant.
05:49M.
05:51And final consonant, please.
05:53Final N.
05:5530 seconds.
06:16MUSIC CONTINUES
06:27Right, Jay, how many?
06:29Six. And Greg?
06:31Six. OK. Matching each other again.
06:33Jay? Shapes.
06:35Yes, and Greg? Phases.
06:37Shapes and phases. No problems there.
06:3913 points each, so I think Dictionary Corner
06:42might get another one over you both. Let's find out.
06:44We've got phenoms.
06:46P-H-E-N-O-M-S.
06:48Phenoms. You're such a phenom, Colin.
06:50Yeah. Never been said before.
06:52Phenomenon.
06:54We've been taking professions and putting man or men...
06:57Oh, yes. ..at the end of it.
06:59So we've had oil men and all sorts.
07:01Can you be a shop man or a shop nurse?
07:03Ah, shop man.
07:05You can, indeed.
07:07It's a little thing we're discovering.
07:09If you just take any profession or any place of work
07:11and put man at the end of it,
07:13does it become a good score?
07:1513 points each.
07:17Let's switch up to the numbers, Mr Pearce.
07:19One big one, please.
07:21One big, five little,
07:23coming up for you.
07:25First numbers of the day.

08:23Times by 50 is... 850.
08:25And then the remaining
08:278 minus 1
08:29is 7. Take that away.
08:31843.
08:33You did get 843, but you declared 844.
08:35I did. So that's tough luck, I'm afraid.
08:37Jay, 842 to steal the points.
08:39How did you do it?
08:416 plus 4 plus 17 times 50
08:43and then minus the 8 for 842.
08:45So you just didn't take the 1 off.
08:47Yep, 842, that's fine.
08:49You've got to declare the right amount.
08:51Well done to you, Jay.
08:53You steal the points for 846.
08:55Rachel Riley?
08:57Yes, this was here.
08:597 minus 4 is 3.
09:018 plus 1 is 9.
09:03And then 50 times 3
09:05is 150.
09:07Take away the 9 for 141
09:09and times it by 6.
09:11You get 846.
09:13Well done.

09:21More of us.
09:23There could have been different clues for this,
09:25but we're going with there's definitely more than three of us
09:27playing golf.
09:29There's definitely more than three of us playing golf.
09:31MUSIC

11:11Very good. Jay, what's the word?
11:13Plunges. Plunges.
11:15And Greg? Plagues.
11:17Plagues and plunges
11:19and dictionary corner.
11:21Maybe a few others in there as well.
11:23Yeah, if you do go away
11:25to wherever it is you're going to go on holiday,
11:27maybe lounges for you? Oh, yes.
11:29Oh, absolutely. I can see you doing that.
11:31I'll have a bit of lounging. A bit of lounging.
11:33Anything else to regale me with there, Susie Dent?
11:35Still just a seven, but it reminds me
11:37of one of my favourite sweets when I was growing up. Spangle.
11:39Spangle. Remember Spangles?
11:41Very good. Let's get back to it then. Greg?
11:43Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
11:45Thank you, Greg. T.
11:47And another consonant, please.

12:17And a consonant.
12:19And lastly, R.
12:21And half a minute.
12:29ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS
12:51Last time. Greg?
12:53Seven. And Jay?
12:55Seven. Good standard again today, Greg.
12:57Seven. Retreat.
12:59Retreat as well. There you go. Let's have a little look at that.
13:03Two retreats.
13:05Two seven points. Nice letters.
13:07Anything else?
13:09Yeah, a few sevens.
13:11Beretta's a nice word, isn't it? Beretta.
13:13Has it gone? Has it gone, hasn't it? Beretta.
13:15It's the hat worn by clergymen.
13:17But you can spell it B-I-R-E-T-T-A
13:19or B-E-R-E-T-T-A.
13:21Oh, OK. Yeah.
13:23However...
13:25A word that shouldn't be a word.
13:27A batterer. A batterer.
13:29You can use somebody who batters, I guess.
13:31E-R, E-R.
13:33Agent now, as we say.
13:35Yeah, there you go. Well, they got you eight points today.
13:37Greg and Jay, we will move back to the numbers.
13:41Let's see if Jay plays it safe, shall we?
13:43One large and five small, please, Rachel.
13:45Thank you, Jay. One from the top
13:47and five from the other apple.
13:49And the little ones for this round.
13:51Two, four,
13:53seven, ten,
13:55and three in the big one.
13:57100, your target.
13:59Oh, dear. One, four, two.
14:01One, four, two. Numbers up.
14:23MUSIC PLAYS
14:33Many ways to go.
14:35One, four, two. Jay? One, four, two.
14:37Yeah, and Greg? One, four, two.
14:39Right, let's have a jay.
14:41Ten times four is 40, plus 100...
14:43I don't know why I got even my pen ready.
14:45Ah, surprised me there, Rich. Greg?
14:47I did ten plus four equals 14.
14:50Yep. Times by three...
14:53Very good. Ten points each.
14:55Right, let's head over to the sunny side of the studio then.
14:58Steve, I just love listening to you all week.
15:01We actually know each other away from sport,
15:04but we haven't talked about that this week,
15:07and you don't that often, but maybe we could today.
15:10I have a charity which I've had for quite a few years,
15:13many almost 20 years now.
15:15We've been helping education projects in Africa,
15:18mainly Kenya, Tanzania,
15:20and some smaller projects in other countries.
15:23It's a great charity, it's called COCO.
15:25And like so many charities during Covid that are smaller,
15:28they really, like, rely on project to project.
15:32Yeah, the main issue, like you said,
15:34is we work in rural areas, which are difficult areas anyway.
15:39We're kind of small, so we're the cracks
15:41in between some of the bigger stuff that goes on,
15:43and often these areas get absolutely nothing.
15:46And education isn't the same as it is here.
15:49It is linked to food, it's linked to sanitation,
15:53it's linked to clean water.
15:54All of those things mean that somebody may go to school
15:57or not go to school.
15:58So you saw that first-hand, and what we try to do
16:00is take people out and raise money by doing some great things,
16:04a trek or a bike ride or whatever it might be,
16:06but then see where that money is being spent.
16:09And we're very, very keen that every penny we raise
16:12is directly spent in the communities,
16:15particularly which you get to see as well.
16:17But it's good, it's very fulfilling,
16:20and hopefully, you know, we've changed quite a few lives.
16:23There is a longer-term issue around, you know,
16:27how we all help places where they're not getting...
16:32..the kids don't get the sort of education
16:34that we would all take for granted here,
16:36for all sorts of reasons.
16:38And some of them are fairly easily put right,
16:41not in the grand scale, but certainly in local areas,
16:44which is what we try and do.
16:45It is brilliant, and he is really underselling it.
16:47It is sensational. Cocoa Charity, brilliant. Thank you, mate.
16:53Right, no quarter given here, though, right?
16:55We have another big battle today
16:57and another challenger leading the way.
16:59Let's get back to it. Greg Letters.
17:01Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:03Thank you, Greg. L
17:05A consonant, please.

17:43We actually need the third vowel. Yeah, the vowel, please.
17:45Yeah, sorry. Overrule with E.
17:47Good to be reminded of that rule, though. Here we go.
18:11MUSIC PLAYS
18:21Greg, I'm going to try an eight.
18:24And Jay?
18:26Seven. The seven is? Unrules.
18:28What eight are you trying, Greg Pearce?
18:30Unlearns.
18:32Unlearns. I've heard the phrase,
18:34you can't unlearn that,
18:36but that doesn't mean it's in the dictionary. Susie?
18:38Well, just a rule on unrules.
18:40You'd need two U's, unfortunately, for that, Jay, sorry.
18:43But unlearns is, you can unlearn a habit,
18:45and it's in the dictionary, so well done.
18:47I was not expecting an eight.
18:49Certainly not expecting a nine from you two.
18:51No, you'd be right not to.
18:53Sorry, you'd be spot on there, yeah.
18:55Nice. The lead changes hands.
18:57Just one point in it, Jay.
18:59What a battle you're putting up today. Let's have more letters.
19:02Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Jay.

20:09I think an eight. What is it, Jay?
20:11Praise. Praise.
20:13What do you think?
20:14Pastore.
20:16Nice. P-A-S-T-O-R-E.
20:18Yes, it's a good countdown word, this one.
20:20In South Africa, pastore is the residence of a minister
20:22of one of the Dutch Reformed churches.
20:24So that lead extended to nine.
20:26As we go back to the numbers, and, Greg, it is all yours.
20:29One big one, please. One big one.
20:31Yeah. You're very sure about that.
20:33And five little.
20:35And this time around, the five small numbers are
20:38eight, seven, two, three, one,
20:43and the big one, 100.
20:45And the target, 940.
20:47940. Numbers up.
21:03MUSIC PLAYS
21:19That'll be time. 940. Did you make it, Greg?
21:22940. And Jay?
21:249. 945.
21:26945. So the 940 for Greg.
21:28100 take away seven.
21:3093. Plus one.
21:3294.
21:34Then two plus eight is ten.
21:37Yep. And times the two together.
21:39Spot me where Jay's kicking himself. 940.
21:41You are there. APPLAUSE
21:44We're back after the break.

21:48Twin Dome. The feathers and the watch were both not working.
21:51The feathers and the watch were both not working.

23:36Six. And the six. OK.
23:38Jay, give me your words. Loaned.
23:40Yep. And... Loaned.
23:42Yep. The Q was a fly on the ointment,
23:44but could you do better than six?
23:46A word... It's new to me.
23:48Susie's help here. Almaner. Is that pronounced...?
23:51Yeah, absolutely right. Yeah, almaner.
23:53Giver of alms, so money or food
23:55given to the poor in historical times.
23:58OK, good stuff. Brilliant.

24:47You do. You've got to have... O.
24:49Thank you. Dames and Rulers, good luck.
24:57MUSIC
25:22All right, talk to me, Greg.
25:24Um, a four.
25:26Jay, chance?
25:28A dodgy six. A dodgy six.
25:30Will the four count? Just confirm the four, Greg.
25:32Hove.
25:34Hove. And what about yourself, Jay?
25:36Hogtie.
25:38Hogtie.
25:40No, it's hyphenated. You're kidding.
25:42I'm so sorry.
25:44The lesser-spotted hyphen has done for Jay.
25:46What do we have?
25:48Well, it could have had hogged.
25:50Hogging the mic.
25:52You were nearly there.
25:55Hogged.
25:57And hogget, is that a word...?
25:59A hogget is a yearling sheep.
26:01And staying with animals, there's also doggy in there,
26:03if you want one, which you can spell with IE as well.
26:05There you go.
26:07Loving, loving your style.
26:09Let's stay in Dictionary Corner, then,
26:11and we will get another Origins of Words.
26:13Now, Susie, sometimes you'll have the theme all week,
26:15somewhere you want to go,
26:17but it's been all about those viewer emails this week.
26:19Yeah, all about the viewer emails.
26:21I've got one sent me scurrying around,
26:23not just the dictionary, but also the history books.
26:25But it's quite a story.
26:27And this question comes from Susie Mason.
26:29Why is a 99 ice cream called the 99?
26:32Which is a brilliant question.
26:34Well, some people assume that the 99 ice cream
26:36used to cost 99p, which is what I always believed,
26:39but we don't think that is the case.
26:42One really popular theory, and this was, in fact,
26:46also validated by Cadbury's, I have to say,
26:49who, you know, sometimes manufacture the flake
26:52that is put inside, others are available.
26:54But apparently, according to them,
26:56the 99 flake was inspired by Italian royalty.
26:59And it all goes back to Italian soft ice cream makers
27:01who were working in County Durham in the 20s,
27:04and they put the chocolate in,
27:06in order to increase their interest and boost sales.
27:09And their chosen combination proved really popular.
27:12So that much seems to be true, but why 99?
27:15Well, apparently, in the days of the monarchy in Italy,
27:17no king has a specifically chosen guard consisting of 99 men.
27:22And consequently, anything considered to be top-notch or superior
27:26was known as a 99.
27:28So that is the accepted official theory.
27:30So, a regal connection there.
27:32But, as I say, it doesn't end there.
27:34Lots and lots of other people asking for this.
27:36In 1922, a man called Stefano Alcari
27:39opened up an ice cream shop in Scotland.
27:41He would apparently break a flake in half,
27:43put it in the ice cream, became incredibly popular,
27:46and was served it at his shop in 99 Portobello High Street.
27:52All right, here we go, then. Four rounds left.
27:55Jay, I'm going to ask you to step up to the plate.

29:02That'll be it. Talk to me, Jay.
29:04Five.
29:05Five and Greg.
29:06I'm going to try six.
29:07OK, so, Jay, the five...
29:09Feast.
29:10Greg, what's the six you're trying?
29:12Mateys.
29:13Yeah, it was the first one that I looked up, actually.
29:15So, it's E-Y in the singular, matey, or matey without the Y,
29:19and the regular plural for that is I-E-S.
29:22So, it's a noun, it's a form of address.
29:24All right, matey?
29:25I think you could issue various ones.
29:27So, normally with exclamations, we do allow the plural,
29:30so I will allow that one.
29:31Very important. Six points.
29:33Greg, pick it up for me with our final letters.
29:36Consonant, please, Rachel.
29:37Thank you, Greg.

30:14And I think I need another vowel again, don't I?
30:16The illusion of choice.
30:17Our final U.
30:19OK, last letters.
30:44MUSIC
30:51That's your lot, Greg.
30:53Five.
30:54Jay?
30:55Five.
30:56The five you've got, Greg?
30:57And T with a Y.
30:58And T with a Y.
30:59And Jay?
31:00Funny.
31:01And funny.
31:02To Dictionary Corner.
31:03Just fives there.
31:05Tightening up a bit as we get towards the end.
31:08What would have been better news?
31:10Not a lot, actually.
31:11Studying?
31:12Just fives.
31:13Gaunt.
31:14Another one.
31:15Almost unfunny.
31:16Just needed another N.
31:17Ah, yeah.
31:18Yeah, I spotted that.
31:19What a shame.
31:20Finally a word to describe me on Countdown.
31:22Right, two rounds left.
31:24That's a bridge too far, unfortunately, Jay,
31:27to catch Greg, but we can have a lot of fun together.
31:29So let's do it.
31:30Two large and four small, please.
31:32Thank you, Jay.
31:33Two big, four little.
31:34For the final time this week,
31:36and the four little ones
31:38are six,
31:39three,
31:40one
31:41and ten.
31:42And your big two, 25 and 50.
31:45And the target to reach, 470.
31:48470 numbers for the last time this week.
32:13Tell me you got that, Jay.
32:14Yeah, 470.
32:15Good on you, mate.
32:16And Greg, yes?
32:17I think so, yeah, I think so.
32:18Nice, it means you'll be on for the tonne
32:20when we get to the conundrum, Jay.
32:22How do you do it?
32:2350 minus three times ten.
32:25Yeah, simple.
32:26And Greg?
32:27The same way.
32:28Let's have a wee look.
32:29Nice, straightforward one to finish the week.
32:32Let's get the fingers on the table.
32:34We're going to start with the big two,
32:36and we're going to start with Greg.
32:38Nice, straightforward one to finish the week.
32:41Let's get the fingers on the buzzers, then,
32:43as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:50Go for it, Greg.
32:51Amassing.
32:52Amassing, let's take a look.
32:54And you're wrong.
32:55Jay, focus in again.
33:08MUSIC PLAYS
33:24Jay, go.
33:25Massaging.
33:26Massaging, is it?
33:27Oh!
33:32What a way to finish.
33:33Love it, love it.
33:34Well done to you.
33:36Massaging, which has done exactly that to the scores.
33:39Have you enjoyed yourself?
33:40I've loved it.
33:41I've absolutely loved it.
33:42Greg, we will see you on Monday.
33:45It's just nice to hold on to a champion for a while.
33:47Yeah.
33:48All right.
33:49Really nice.
33:50Right, you've got to race off.
33:51Steve, first time in Dictionary Corner for you.
33:53Enjoyed the week, yeah?
33:54I'm trying to work out whether I feel more intelligent
33:56or less intelligent.
33:57I'll work that out afterwards.
33:59No, there you go, there's a familiar thought.
34:01Susie, you enjoy your weekend?
34:03Thank you, I will.
34:04We're going to have to cancel Tenerife
34:06because we don't get bank holidays off.
34:08We're back here Monday, just like a normal day.
34:10Empty promises.
34:11That would be brilliant if we could do it, but we can't.
34:13We'll be here.
34:14You'll get the day off, we wouldn't want the day off.
34:16So join us on Monday.
