00:00Hey, Coach.
00:00Morning.
00:01How are you?
00:01How are you?
00:02I'm doing OK.
00:03Extra.
00:03Obviously disappointed.
00:05Disappointed?
00:05In the game.
00:06Yeah.
00:07I thought defensively and special teams-wise,
00:09I thought those guys played good enough
00:11to win the game, offensively.
00:13A lot of challenges and just not good enough.
00:15Things look different when you're watching as a fan,
00:18so probably looks completely different to you.
00:20But is that the worst game you've
00:23been involved in in your professional career?
00:26Not at all.
00:26Not at all?
00:27No, there have been bad losses around here.
00:29But once again, my focus is on this one.
00:31And it's a true loss if we don't learn from it,
00:34including myself.
00:34So I've been around some tough games.
00:3912 penalties over 100 yards.
00:41I know you're disappointed.
00:43You put that more on the guys or on you as the head coach?
00:45It initially starts with me.
00:47And we just have to be better.
00:49I will say, going back to some of those penalties
00:51that happened in the game, some of them were questionable.
00:56Even with Nick, they said he moved the ball forward
00:59and called him for that penalty.
01:01And there were other things that happened.
01:03But when it's all said and done, they called the penalty.
01:05And we just have to be better.
01:07Gerrard, one of the things that you consistently
01:09talk about where you're struggling
01:11is your inability to throw the football.
01:13Like you said, you ran the ball well.
01:14You played good defense, special teams.
01:17What are you going to do differently moving forward
01:19that you think you guys need to do to change it so you
01:22can stop making some plays?
01:23Look, we're in the solution business.
01:25No matter who the players are in the locker room,
01:27we as coaches have to come up with solutions.
01:29And I say it every week.
01:30Every spot is going to be evaluated.
01:33And it still holds true today.
01:35We talk about this with the Red Sox.
01:37Do you have the personnel on this football team,
01:39on this roster, to be winning these games?
01:41Look, we're always looking to get better.
01:43I'm not going to sit here and say our roster is good or bad.
01:47This is what we're working with.
01:48And it's my job and the coaching staff's job
01:50to get these guys to go out there and perform
01:52consistently here and going forward.
01:55This past week, there's been a lot of reports,
01:57whether it was the mutiny report that in the locker room,
02:00it's teetering on a mutiny.
02:02You had Godchow, Covington talking about players
02:05being selfish out there.
02:08What is the issue right now?
02:09When you look at this team, are we blowing it out
02:11of proportion?
02:12Or is there a lot of frustration behind closed doors?
02:17The mutiny report is what it is.
02:19Guys put out things all the time.
02:20If it's true or false, that's for you guys to decide.
02:23And you guys to put your spin on those things.
02:26What I will say is,
02:27The unfortunate thing, just heads up, in a mutiny,
02:31the captain is the last one to know.
02:33So just be careful.
02:35No, I appreciate that.
02:36Lock the doors.
02:38Greg has no idea what we're planning.
02:40He's never played team sports.
02:43I was on the bench.
02:44What I will say is,
02:45I got a uniform, but yes, go ahead.
02:47When a player comes out and says, look,
02:50you guys use what the players say.
02:52And they also use you guys as vessels
02:54to get the word to the players as well,
02:55because they all listen to it.
02:57They all read it, see it on special team.
02:58I'm sorry, see it on social media.
03:01What I will say, I agree.
03:02Like some of the plays that we had,
03:04and this goes back a couple of weeks now,
03:06letting the quarterback out of the pocket.
03:07It's like, look, let's play within the scheme.
03:09And I tell the guys all the time, like,
03:11this is the canvas.
03:12I don't care what picture you paint,
03:13but just stay on the canvas.
03:15And so you have to have those guardrails
03:17to keep those guys in order.
03:18And if you're not doing your job,
03:19then look, you can't be on the field.
03:21So is there truth to it?
03:22Just the mutiny?
03:23I don't think so.
03:24Okay.
03:25But I'm the last to know.
03:26I mean, that's what it is.
03:27Right.
03:27Okay.
03:28But it seemed like-
03:29You guys should ask the players.
03:30I'm not sure if you have.
03:31You should ask the players.
03:32We asked Jelani Tavai about it.
03:33And he said on Friday, he said, absolutely not.
03:35You can ask anyone.
03:36Yeah.
03:37Well, Jelani, I did ask Jelani Tavai about Jacoby Brissett
03:40and whether he thought Jacoby gave the team
03:43the best chance to win.
03:44And he paused, said, I don't know.
03:46You have to ask Coach Mayo.
03:48Which I would say, it's all good to pause.
03:50When you ask a question,
03:51sometimes you got to think about-
03:52Oh, I wish I had more of it.
03:54Yeah.
03:55But in all sincerity,
03:55so do you believe that the plan,
03:59whatever it is,
04:01is the most effective way to build
04:04at the most important position?
04:06We're going to get better.
04:07And once again, I would say all positions
04:09are always being evaluated.
04:11Pause.
04:12So I guess maybe to piggyback off this question a little bit,
04:17do you feel like at this moment right now,
04:19Jacoby Brissett still gives you the best chance of winning?
04:21Look, we haven't had our full staff meeting today.
04:24That's a conversation, not only at that spot,
04:27but all the spots,
04:28how we get better as a football team.
04:29We're not playing well.
04:30It's not a secret.
04:31And being the head coach of this team,
04:33I have to accept all the responsibility for that.
04:36Are there, when it comes to the mutiny thing,
04:37are there players that express to you
04:40that they think that Drake May
04:42might give you a better chance to win?
04:43I don't want to get into what players have told me
04:47in my office or anything like that.
04:49Yeah.
04:50But once again, we have to take a look at everything.
04:52Yeah.
04:53If you have a meritocracy, which I think you do,
04:55and you said that there have been times
04:56that Drake May has outplayed Jacoby Brissett,
04:59do you risk, let's say the locker room stuff's
05:02mostly nonsense made by the media, I'll buy that.
05:04Do you risk losing a locker room
05:07as a former standout All-Pro player yourself
05:09if you see that the most important position
05:12isn't being occupied by the guy
05:13that gives the team the best chance to win?
05:15Look, one thing I would say about Jacoby,
05:16and I've said this time and time again,
05:18and even yesterday, he was hit quite a bit.
05:20Look, I admire his toughness and, you know,
05:23being able to get back up and continue to play the game.
05:25He made some good throws yesterday.
05:26He also missed some throws, and that has shown up,
05:29you know, pretty, you know, all season.
05:31Now, in saying that, you know, he's been,
05:34he's been hammered back there in the pocket.
05:36And I think it's unfair to sit here
05:38and be too critical of him, but at the same time,
05:41recognizing to give this team the best chance to win,
05:43we have to be able to throw the ball.
05:44And so, like I said earlier, you know,
05:46it's a solution-based business,
05:48and we got to find solutions as coaches.
05:49What was the plan for the end of the game yesterday?
05:51Was the plan to get the ball to Hunter Henry?
05:53Because it did seem like you just let time
05:56run off the clock.
05:58That was a mis-execution on multiple levels,
06:00which I would say as the game went, we're on,
06:03you know, the focus,
06:05especially in those critical situations,
06:07just wasn't there.
06:08And, you know, we have to do a better job,
06:10you know, making sure we understand these situations,
06:12which we go through situations all the time.
06:14And even going back, looking defensively,
06:16you know, they were just on the field too long.
06:18And it gets to a point in time where, you know,
06:20those guys are tired.
06:21We had a guy in Marte Mapu, you know,
06:23hit this is his first game and played the majority
06:25of the snaps.
06:26And, you know, we got to be in better condition.
06:28We got to be able to execute in those critical situations.
06:30And it starts with me.
06:31Gerrard, I think the biggest reason why we're frustrated
06:34as fans is we looked at this team
06:37before the season started and we looked and said,
06:39okay, on paper, you're better than Washington.
06:43We think you're better than Chicago and Denver.
06:46And then-
06:46I called cap on that.
06:47No, no, no.
06:48I did.
06:49I did.
06:50I sat on this,
06:51I sat on this radio station and said,
06:54this is a better football team on paper.
06:56Top 10 defense.
06:58He's right.
06:59Running game.
06:59Chicago.
07:00Yeah, yeah, Chicago.
07:02So here's what I would say is when you see
07:04these young quarterbacks that are,
07:07looks like they're getting better.
07:09I think that's where the frustration for us as fans
07:11comes in because we felt-
07:13Which is fair.
07:13We felt like we were going to be in that same situation
07:16and maybe we'd be sitting here,
07:18not to say at four and one, but three and two
07:21with the headed in the right direction where we go,
07:24okay, we got our guy in the future.
07:26Yeah, which is fair that you and the fans feel that way.
07:29I would say as a coach and being inside this building
07:31and I've said it time and time again,
07:33like we have to do what's better,
07:34not only for the short term, but the long term,
07:36which I understand and don't fall into the narrative
07:38fallacy of, I mean, this goes back to when Zuckerberg
07:41started Facebook and everyone started dropping out
07:43of college thinking they're going to start
07:44the next Facebook.
07:45We see a couple of quarterbacks out here doing well.
07:47There's also hundreds of examples over the years
07:50of it not going that same direction.
07:52And that's how I feel.
07:53Yeah, I was going to say, when you look at like
07:55when you brought up the commanders,
07:56you look at that organization,
07:58what is the difference when it comes to the result
08:00that they're getting from your perspective?
08:03Cause you look similar.
08:04I mean, I know what you're trying to,
08:05I know what you're trying to lead me to,
08:07like the quarterback through 90%.
08:08I'm not, I'm not.
08:09No, no, I'm good.
08:10I thought that might be what,
08:11No, no, look, the quarterback,
08:13it starts, look, the quarterback at the commander
08:15is not to get into talking about other teams.
08:17Like he threw, you know, 90% in one game.
08:19I think the other game was what?
08:2085%.
08:21Look, he's playing well and he's playing at a high level.
08:24And remember, we never cap on this show.
08:25We're all facts.
08:27You cap sometimes.
08:28No, I never cap.
08:28Pull the clip, pull the clip.
08:30Yeah, pull the clip.
08:31He doesn't have the clip.
08:32He doesn't have the clip.
08:34Well, Wiggy talks so much that you can't remember
08:35which one was which.
08:36So it usually bounces off.
08:37Which is cap and which is not cap.
08:39Yes.
08:39We'd be remiss not to ask about Jabril Peppers.
08:42We just found out about that.
08:43Do you have anything to say?
08:44I know the organization said no further comment
08:47at this time, but as a head coach,
08:48this is a guy under you.
08:49Yeah, I mean, look, he called me that morning.
08:53I knew what was going on and the NFL,
08:55we've informed the NFL what was going on
08:57and we're still gathering information.
09:00So he's still on the team as far as you're aware.
09:03Yeah, I mean, I don't think anyone knows the facts
09:06or anything like that.
09:06I mean, it's a process.
09:08How do you feel like the young wide receivers are progressing?
09:11They're doing, I think they are progressing.
09:13I would say, you know, let's look at Booty yesterday.
09:16I mean, the guy, you know, he gets a few catches,
09:18but I think the most impressive thing
09:19or the thing that I want them to hear
09:21is on that long run by Ramondre,
09:23Booty's out there blocking.
09:24And that's how you get to those big plays
09:25where everyone out there is helping one another.
09:28With Ramondre, was the plan always to have him sit,
09:31not start and then put him in in the first quarter?
09:33Was that just, you were going to see how the game went?
09:35Well, I would say, you know, yesterday,
09:37those guys were up quite a bit.
09:38And the plan was, yeah, to have Gibby go in there
09:41and start the game off and we'll go from there.
09:44And I guess the last one for me is,
09:47it might not be my last one based on what you say,
09:49but how do you feel like, because I heard you talk
09:52about the coaching staff and you guys got to do better.
09:54How do you feel that Alex Van Pelt is doing,
09:58especially when you're offensive,
09:59when you're talking about the offense here,
10:01when it comes to designing plays, maybe creativity
10:05and to get some things going in as far as for your passing game?
10:08How you feel like he's been doing?
10:10Is it some things you'd like to see him do more of?
10:12One thing I would say, like, I mean, look,
10:13these are the cards that we've all been dealt.
10:15And I would say we've, look, let's start up front.
10:17It always starts up front,
10:19no matter what side of the ball you're talking about,
10:20defensive line or offensive line.
10:22We've had multiple combinations up front.
10:24And so you get kind of limited until you feel good
10:26about those five guys that you have up front.
10:29What I will say is we got out of the game yesterday
10:31relatively injury-free compared to the past couple of weeks.
10:36And so hopefully we could build some consistency there
10:38and those guys get on the same page.
10:41How much of a role do you have with Alex Van Pelt
10:44in the offensive game plan as you build up?
10:47So this week for the Texans,
10:48or is that he's the head coach of the offense,
10:50you're overlooking it?
10:51And I kind of took that back when I said it earlier.
10:54I think it was in training camp.
10:55Look, I'm ultimately the head coach.
10:57I spend time, a lot of time, equal time,
10:58I would say, with the offensive and defensive staff.
11:01And we go through all those things.
11:02And look, it may not be the same lingo,
11:05but I would say from an idea standpoint,
11:06remember, it's all about spacing.
11:09No, I give my thoughts and he puts together the game plan.
11:12Do you give thoughts, though, of the last four plays?
11:15You're averaging just under eight yards of carry.
11:17You have four plays to get in the end zone.
11:19You throw four straight times.
11:20Was that a mistake in hindsight?
11:21Well, you know, I wouldn't want to say it's a mistake.
11:24What I will say is we got down there
11:26and even though we did throw the ball,
11:29it was a mistake.
11:31The execution of the plays was bad.
11:34That's what I would say.
11:35I think there is a concern for those of us who love you,
11:38loved you as a player.
11:39Wiggy was saying this earlier,
11:42that you don't have full say
11:46when it comes to something like starting,
11:48who your starting quarterback is going to be.
11:49And I think that comes from those who have heard you say,
11:53you know, you said it again on this show,
11:55last week he outplayed Jacoby Reset in training camp.
11:59I think there are some who go, wait a minute,
12:00is it his decision to make?
12:02And if so, how is he not walking in there today
12:05and going, all right,
12:06we got to give something different a try here, you know?
12:08Yeah, I mean, and that's fair.
12:10That's a fair assessment of your opinion.
12:14I'll just leave it at that.
12:15I mean, you guys, you guys are here.
12:17You guys are here.
12:19You can offer up any opinion.
12:20You got the answers to, you're doing a great job.
12:22No, I'm just saying, you guys can offer any opinion.
12:24If you wanted to, you would want,
12:27is it just, is it your decision only?
12:30Can I say it's my decision only?
12:31Only.
12:32Only.
12:33Not Elliot, not Robert.
12:33And that's no cap.
12:34And that's no cap.
12:35My decision only.
12:36Okay.
12:37Well, there's a lot of cap space too.
12:38I don't know.
12:38No.
12:39Although lots of players are.
12:40I'll lighten the mood a little.
12:43The mood's not heavy though, you know, for me at least.
12:45Like, look, we lost, we've not played well.
12:49We haven't performed well.
12:50We haven't coached well enough to get wins.
12:53With that being said, it's all a waste
12:55if we don't learn from these mistakes
12:56and get better going forward.
12:58Yeah.
12:59I like that.
13:00NFLPA suggested this week
13:03that they want locker room interviews to go away.
13:06Sometimes guys are, you know, caught without a towel on.
13:09Sometimes, sometimes we get.
13:11Is that the main thing?
13:12Caught without a towel on.
13:13We used to do that on purpose.
13:15We're all adults.
13:17How would you.
13:18Eyes up.
13:19Eyes up.
13:20You don't know what I got below the waist.
13:22What's that?
13:22What's happening?
13:23You think they ought to go?
13:24No, all right.
13:25No, no opinion on that either way.
13:26No opinion on that.
13:27All right.
13:28Anybody else with coach before he gets to work?
13:30When do you think you'll make a decision
13:32if you're going to go with Drake for next week?
13:35Look, we're still, we're still going through,
13:37you know, the film from yesterday
13:39and we'll see how it goes.
13:41Okay.
13:41Thanks guys.
13:42All right, coach.
13:43That is Gerard Mayo.
13:44And here is.
