Asean can overcome the challenge of rising geopolitical divisions through shared leadership and a neutral policy, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at the Khazanah Megatrends Forum on Monday (Oct 7), the Prime Minister highlighted Malaysia’s upcoming role as Asean chair next year, underlining the need for a collective approach to diplomacy in navigating complex global dynamics.

00:00To deal with the climate crisis, environmental degradation and resource depletion, we have
00:09the National Energy Transition Roadmap 2030 and the recently launched National Climate
00:16Change Policy 2.0 to transform our energy sector, reduce emissions and ensure that we
00:23meet our climate targets.
00:25While Malaysia has long been a global player in electronics and electrical manufacturing,
00:33we must now pivot towards more sustainable technologies and practices while moving up
00:39the semiconductor value chain in the global supply network.
00:46As the demand for advanced chips continues to spike in tandem with the proliferation
00:53of artificial intelligence, EVs and autonomous driving, as well as in response to a host
01:02of geopolitical and geoeconomic factors, the National Industrial Master Plan 2030 must
01:10be nimble enough to make the necessary adjustments to respond to the vagaries of market forces.
01:19And as we look ahead to our ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, in fact technically next week itself,
01:29Malaysia is prepared to lead with a vision of unity, inclusivity and collaboration.
01:36Even geopolitical divisions threaten the stability of our region, but through shared
01:41leadership and a policy of strong neutrality, or we call it centrality, we can overcome
01:48these changes, inshallah.
01:51And as we may go beyond ASEAN, as we explore the partnerships with BRICS, which will deepen
02:00global south-south relationships, we reiterate the paramount importance of adhering to a
02:09rules-based order, regionally and internationally, but we reject the hypocrisy and double standards
02:19observed by those when it suits them.
02:22Likewise, the world needs a new financial architecture, founded on the principles of
02:28equity, fair play and justice, and we cannot continue to be disadvantaged by the anomalies
02:38and aberrations of the Bretton Woods system.
