In a historic move, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted classical language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. This decision underscores the significance of these languages as vital custodians of India's rich cultural heritage ¹ ². By recognizing their ancient roots and literary traditions, the government aims to preserve and promote these languages for future generations. Speaking on this occasion, Marathi actress Amruta Khanvilkar expressed her pride, saying, "I am proud to be a Marathi mulgi. This is a commendable step taken by the government for the Marathi language. It will significantly boost the language, and many people will be inspired by Marathi culture and heritage."

00:00I am very proud to be a Maharashtrian, to be a Marathi girl, to be born in Maharashtra.
00:07Today, Marathi has been declared as an abhijat language.
00:12It has been given the status of a classical language by the government of India.
00:20And I think it is such a prestigious thing for all of us as Maharashtrians,
00:25as people of Maharashtra who are born here, who come from here.
00:29And it is nothing but a thing of pride and absolute, absolute honour.
00:35And all I want to say is, I am a proud Maharashtrian, I am a proud Maratha and a proud Indian.
00:44I think it is amazing that whenever any regional language is given a status,
00:49where the literature, the culture is going to be shared with a lot of other people,
00:55of other castes and of other religions and of other languages.
00:59I think it is nothing but an absolute honour.
01:03And of course, there is so much of literature and there is so much of material in Marathi
01:10that I feel that even a birth will be less if you have to read or write or listen about a language,
01:16its literature, its culture.
01:22I think, somewhere or the other, the Marathi language has always made its existence,
01:31and it will continue to make its existence, very strong.
01:36And somewhere or the other, whether it is the younger generation, the older generation,
01:40this generation, they are only and only going to benefit from knowing this language,
01:45from understanding this language.
01:47And it is amazing that this honour has just added another feather to what Marathi language is,
01:55to what Maharashtrians are and what Marathi literature is.
